How to bind off from the right side (RS)

In this DROPS video we show how you can bind off your work from the right side. You bind off to lock stitches that no longer will be worked to stop them from running. You also bind off stitches to shape arm holes, neck and shoulders. The bind off should neither be too firm or too hard, e.g. you need to be able to get the sweater over your head. To prevent binding off to firm you can use a larger needle then what you have used during your knitting. Binding off with knit stitches, you knit the stitches and then keep passing the next to last knitted stitch over the last knitted stitch. When 1 stitch remains, cut the thread, and pull yarn through last stitch. You must read the pattern to be able to follow. How to bind off from the wrong side (WS)

In this DROPS video we show how you can bind off your work from the wrong side. On the wrong side you bind off the same way as from the right side, but the stitches are purled before they are passed over each other. How to cast off in rib

In this DROPS video we show how to cast off in rib. When there is a rib edge we usually say in the pattern to cast off in rib. It may be a single ribbing K1/P1, or double K2/P2, this last is what we are showing in this video. First we show the continental style and towards the end off the row we switch to US style. K the K sts, and P the P sts as you bind off by passing next to last st knitted over the last st knitted. You must read the pattern to be able to follow. How to bind off an elastic edge with yarn over

In this DROPS video we show one way to bind off with yarn over so that you get an elastic edge. We show both how we bind off over knit stitch and purl stitch. Knit the 1st stitch, make a yarn over, but an opposite yarn over (from back to front), knit the next stitch = 2 stitches + 1 yarn over on the right needle. With the left needle lift the yarn over and the 1st worked stitch over the last stitch = 1 stitch on the right needle. The next stitch is a purl stitch and work as follows: Make an ordinary yarn over, purl 1. Lift the yarn over and the 1st worked stitch over the last stitch = 1 stitch on the right needle. Make a new ordinary yarn over, purl 1. Lift the yarn over and the 1st worked stitch over the last stitch = 1 stitch on the right needle. How to do an Italian cast off with Knit 1 and Purl 1

In this DROPS video we show how to do an Italian cast off to a rib with knit 1 / purl 1 by sewing the cast off edge with needle and thread. With this technique we get an elastic cast off that is perfect for example on toe up socks, edge around neck, a shawl edge or sleeve edges when working top down. Cut yarn long enough for your cast off, approx 3-4 times the length of the edge you are casting off. Part 1: Start from the right side (the first stitch should be a knit stitch). Insert the needle into the 1st stitch as if to knit, lift the stitch off the needle, insert the needle into the 2nd stitch on the left needle (= knit stitch) as if to purl. Pull the thread through these 2 stitches (= 1 stitch cast off). Part 2: Insert the needle into the 1st stitch (purl stitch) as if to purl and lift the stitch off the needle, then insert the needle from the back side between the 1st and 2nd stitches and insert the needle through the 2nd stitch (purl stitch) as if to knit, pull the thread completely through the 2 stitches. Repeat Part 1 and Part 2 until all the stitches have been cast off. For each time Part 1 and Part 2 have been completed, 1 stitch is cast off. We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video. Italian cast off – Knit 2 / Purl 2

In this DROPS video we show how to do an Italian cast off in a piece work with Knit 2 Purl 2. Before starting the cast off, work 1 round where 2 knit - 2 purl becomes 1 knit - 1 purl. Cut yarn long enough for your cast off, approx 4 times the length of the edge you are casting off. 1) Insert the needle into the 1st stitch (knit stitch) as if to knit and slip the stitch of needle. 2) Insert needle into 2nd stitch (knit stitch) as if to purl. 3) Insert needle into 1st stitch (purl stitch) as if to purl, lift the stitch off (the thread is now at the back of the work). From the back, insert the needle between 1st and 2nd stitches. 4) From the front, insert the needle into the purl stitch (2nd stitch). Repeat from the beginning. How to do an Italian cast off in the round

In this DROPS video we show how to cast off by sewing an Italian cast off to a rib with 1Knit 1Purl in the round. Before we start casting off, we work 4 rounds where the knit stitches and the purl stitches are worked separately. In the 1st and 3rd round, work the knit stitches, while the purl stitches are loosely lifted off as if they are to be worked purl with the thread in front. In the 2nd and 4th round work the purl stitches and lift the knit stitches loosely off as if they are to be purl. We use a stitch marker to show the beginning of the round, but when we start casting off, we put a stitch marker in the 1st knit stitch and in the 1st purl stitch. Cut the thread, the thread end to be sewn with must be at least 4 times as long as the piece to be cast off. Now the casting off part start. * Insert the needle into the 1st knit stitch as if to knit, pull the thread through and lift the stitch off the needle. Insert the needle into the 2nd knit stitch as if to purl and pull the thread through, let this stitch sit on the needle. Insert the needle from the right in the 1st purl stitch and towards you, pull the thread through and remove the stitch from needle. Insert the needle from the back between the next 2 stitches, turn the needle and insert the needle back, but then in the purl stitch as if to knit and pull the thread through. Repeat from * around until there are 2 stitches left, put the first 2 stitches (stitches with markers), on needle and continue casting off. Since the thread has already been through the first 2 stitches at the beginning of the round 1 time, sew these stitches only 1 time through at the end. Fasten the thread to the back. How to do an Italian cast off in a rib with K1 / P1 without a needle - tubular cast off

In this DROPS video we show how to do an Italian cast off in a rib with K1 / P1 without a needle, also called tubular cast off. Our sample is a knitted cuff in K1, P1 ribbing. First you will knit 4 rows where half the sts are worked separate, and this is done by lifting all the P sts and knitting all the K sts. Work like this for 4 rows. Then we separate the sts by putting them on one needle each. Once that is done make sure both needles are pointing towards the end of the working yarn, which is attached to the needle in the back. In this DROPS video we show how to do an Italian cast off to a rib with knit 1, purl 1, but in the cast off the knit 1 becomes knit 1 twisted. With this technique we get an elastic cast off that is perfect for example on toe up socks, edge around neck, a shawl edge or sleeve edges when working top down. Cut yarn long enough for your cast off, approx 4 times the length of the edge you are casting off. Start by locking the first stitch like this: Insert the needle into the 1st stitch as if to purl and tighten. Do not slip the stitch of needle. Insert the needle from the back between the 1st and 2nd stitches so that the thread comes to the front, then insert the needle into the purl stitch. Then insert the needle into the 1st stitch as if to knit, lift the stitch off the needle. Now the cast off starts: 1) When there is a purl stitch to sew off, sew as follows: Insert needle into 2nd stitch (knit stitch) as if to purl, insert needle into 1st stitch (purl stitch) as if to knit, lift the stitch off (the thread is now at the back of the work). 2) When there is a knit stitch to sew off, sew as follows: From the back, insert the needle between 1st and 2nd stitches. From the front, insert the needle into the purl stitch (2nd stitch), also from the right side, insert the needle into the 1st stitch as if to knit and slip the stitch of needle. How to make a sewn cast off

In this DROPS video we show how to make a sewn cast off, an elastic cast off that is perfect for example on toe up socks, edge around neck, a shawl edge or sleeve edges when working top down. How to bind off with I-cord

How to cast off with an i-cord edge in garter stitch

In this DROPS video we show how we cast off with an i-cord edge in a piece worked in garter stitches / ridge stitches. Cast on 2 stitches, knit up 1 stitch in the outermost loop of the bottom ridge = 3 stitches on the needle. *Push the stitches back to the beginning of the needle and work again from the right side without turning. Knit 2, slip the next stitch as if to knit, knit up a new stitch in the next ridge on the hood, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted-up stitch *, work from *-* until an edge has been worked. Knit up 1 stitch in each ridge, if this makes the edge tight, knit up 1 more stitch evenly (we have knitted 2 extra stitches in this piece). Knit together the last 3 stitches on the row. How to cast off with i-cord loops

In this DROPS video we show you how to cast off a work with i-cord loops. When casting off, * work an i-cord of approx. 6 cm (see explanation for i-cord below), knit the stitches from the i-cord along with the next 3 stitches on the swap *, repeat * - * entire row, cast off the 3 last stitches as a usually cast off. How to cast off with a picot edge

In this DROPS video we show you have to cast off with a picot edge. How to cast off with a picot edge on a rib

In this DROPS video we show how to cast off with a picot on a rib. Knit 1, * insert right needle between the next 2 stitches (not through the stitches), make 1 yarn over, pull the yarn over between the stitches and place on left needle *, work from *-* 2 more times (= 3 yarn overs on left needle), knit and cast off 7 stitches (= 1 stitch + 3 yarn overs + 3 stitches). Work from *-* and cast off 7 stitches in the same way along the whole edge. When there are not enough stitches to work another picot, cast off the remaining stitches as usual.
