I’d like to knit in yarn group B, can you suggest needle size I might use? Amount of yarn is not a problem, I tend to knit close to standard tension or slightly more loosely.

Dear Mrs Hooper, you should have to swatch first to check which needle size you should need, but this might be a better idea to follow a pattern worked for a yarn group B - see here. Happy knitting!

---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- INCREASE TIP-1: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE LEFT- from RIGHT SIDE: Use left needle to pick up yarn between 2 stitches from row below, pick up yarn from the front and knit stitch in stitch loop behind the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT - from RIGHT SIDE: Use left needle to pick up yarn between 2 stitches from row below, pick up yarn from the back and knit stitch in stitch loop in front of needle. INCREASE TIP-2: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT - from WRONG SIDE: Use left needle to pick up yarn between 2 stitches from row below, pick up yarn from the back and purl stitch in stitch loop in front of needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE LEFT - from WRONG SIDE: Use left needle to pick up yarn between 2 stitches from row below, pick up yarn from the front and purl stitch in stitch loop behind the needle. GARTER STITCH: Knit on all rows, i.e. knit from right side and knit from wrong side. 1 ridge vertically = knit 2 rows. BAND WITH I-CORD: BEGINNING OF ROW: Work band as follows (= 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches): Slip 1 stitch purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1, work 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 stitches in garter stitch. END OF ROW: Work band as follows (= 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches): Work until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain on row, work 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 stitches in garter stitch, slip 1 stitch purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1. Continue like this from both right side and wrong side. BUTTONHOLES: Decrease for buttonholes on right band (when garment is worn). Decrease from right side when 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 stitches remain on row as follows: ROW 1 (= right side): Make 1 yarn over, knit 2 together, knit 0-0-0-0-1-1-1, slip 1 stitch purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Work band as before and knit yarn over to make a buttonhole. Decrease for first buttonhole on first row from right side when 1 cm = ⅜" has been worked after last increase for V-neck. Then decrease the next 3 buttonholes, approx. 6½-6½-7-7-7-7-7½ cm = 2½"-2½"-2¾"-2¾"-2¾"-2¾"-2⅞" apart. Adjust so that bottom buttonhole is placed in the transition between stockinette stitch and rib on body. INCREASE TIP - rib transition: When increasing stitches evenly in transition for rib, there will be an even increase if you increase where stitches are going to be purled, the stitches in stockinette stitch will then continue nicely over into rib. SLEEVE TIP: When picking up stitches mid under sleeve, there will be a small hole in the transition between stitches on body and sleeves. The holes can be closed by picking up the strand between two stitches - work this strand twisted together with the first stitch between body and sleeve to close the hole. DECREASE TIP: Decrease 1 stitch on each side of marker thread as follows: Work until 3 stitches remain before marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker thread is between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch worked (= 2 stitches decreased). ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- JACKET - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: In this pattern needles of different length have been used, begin with fitting length for number of stitches and switch as needed. If 0 stitches are given for the chosen size, it means that you skip the information and jump to next information. Garment is worked as point 1 - 5. 1 - BACK PIECE: First work bands back and forth on needle, then pick up stitches for back piece along the band. Work back piece back and forth downwards while at the same time increasing in each side of piece until number of stitches for shoulder width is reached. Back piece has a slight diagonal shoulder. 2 - FRONT PIECES: Begin by picking up stitches along one shoulder on back piece, work front piece downwards while increasing towards the neck. Repeat on the other shoulder. 3- YOKE: On next row work all stitches on same circular needle - work as follows: Work stitches on one front piece, pick up stitches for sleeve along the side on front piece, work stitches on back piece, pick up stitches for sleeve along the side on the other front piece and work stitches on last front piece = work yoke over all stitches back and forth from mid front. 4 - INCREASES FOR V-NECK, BODY AND SLEEVES: When working the yoke, increase stitches for V-neck, body and sleeves, first increase for V-neck and sleeves, then increase for both V-neck, body and sleeves. 5 - BODY AND SLEEVES: When all stitches have been increased for body and sleeves and yoke is knitted to given measurements, divide the piece for body and sleeves. Work body downwards back and forth on circular needle while putting the sleeves aside. Then work sleeves downwards in the round on needle. ---------------------------------------------------------- RIGHT BAND WITH I-CORD: Cast on 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches on needle size 5.5 MM = US 9 with 1 strand DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk and 1 strand DROPS Alpaca (= 2 strands). RIGHT SIDE: Work band as follows (= 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches): Work 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 stitches in garter stitch, slip 1 stitch purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1. WRONG SIDE: Work band as follows (= 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches): Slip 1 stitch purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1, work 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 stitches in garter stitch. Continue like this from both right side and wrong side. Work until band measures approx. 7½-8-8-8-8½-8½-8½ cm = 2⅞"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3¼"-3¼"-3¼", finish after a row from wrong side. Cut the yarn and slip stitches on 1 thread. LEFT BAND WITH I-CORD: Pick up 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches in the cast-on edge on right band with needle size 5.5 MM = US 9 and 1 strand in each quality (= 2 strands) - pick up from right side and make sure that the stitches in garter stitch are against each other in one side and I-cord stitches are against each other in the other side when working. Work as follows (work 1st row from wrong side): WRONG SIDE: Work band as follows (= 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches): Work 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 stitches in garter stitch, slip 1 stitch purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1. RIGHT SIDE: Work band as follows (= 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches): Slip 1 stitch purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1, work 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 stitches in garter stitch. Continue like this from both right side and wrong side. Work until band measures approx. 7½-8-8-8-8½-8½-8½ cm = 2⅞"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3¼"-3¼"-3¼" from pick up edge – last row is worked from wrong side. Band measures approx. 15-16-16-16-17-17-17 cm = 6"-6¼"-6¼"-6¼"-6¾"-6¾"-6¾" in total (cast-on edge is in the middle of band). Cut the yarn and slip stitches on 1 thread. Now pick up stitches along one side of band and work back piece as explained below. BACK PIECE: Pick up 24-26-26-26-28-28-28 stitches along one long side of band on circular needle size 5.5 MM = US 9 with 1 strand in each quality (= 2 strands) – pick up from right side inside 1 stitch in garter stitch along one side of band with garter stitches and adjust to pick up same number of stitches on each side of the middle of band (do not work over the 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches on the thread in each side). ROW 1 (= wrong side): Purl all stitches. ROW 2 (= right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1 and knit 4, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until 4 stitches remain, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 4. ROW 3 (= wrong side): Read INCREASE TIP-2 and purl 4, increase 1 stitch towards the right, purl until 4 stitches remain, increase 1 stitch towards the left, purl 4. AFTER 3RD ROW: Work 2nd and 3rd ROW 8-8-9-9-9-10-10 times (= 16-16-18-18-18-20-20 rows have been worked), after increase there are = 56-58-62-62-64-68-68 stitches on needle. Remember to follow the knitting gauge! Cut the yarn, slip stitches on a thread or an stitch holder. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Find right shoulder on back piece as follows: Place back piece flat with right side up, place back piece so that stitches on thread/stitch holder (from back piece) are towards you, right side of piece = right shoulder. Now pick up stitches along right diagonal shoulder on back piece - begin from right side at the armhole and pick up stitches in towards the neck as follows: Pick up 1 stitch in every row worked inside outermost stitch (= 16-16-18-18-18-20-20 stitches), then work as follows over the 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches from thread on right band with I-cord: Work 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 stitches in garter stitch, slip 1 stitch purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1= 22-22-24-24-25-27-27 stitches for shoulder. Insert 1 marker in piece in towards the neck - insert marker on the inside of the band stitches. All length measurements are done from this marker, measured in stitch direction. Work in stockinette stitch with 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches BAND WITH I-CORD as before - read explanation above (work first row from wrong side). When piece measures 9-9-10-10-10-12-12 cm = 3½"-3½"-4"-4"-4"-4¾"-4¾" from marker, increase stitches for V-neck as follows: ROW 1 (= right side): Knit until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain, increase 1 stitch towards the right, work band as before – remember INCREASE TIP-1. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Work band as before, purl the rest of row. Work 1st and 2nd ROW 3 times in total (= 6 rows worked) = 25-25-27-27-28-30-30 stitches. 3 increases have been done and piece measures approx. 12-12-13-13-13-15-15 cm = 4¾"-4¾"-5⅛"-5⅛"-5⅛"-6"-6" from marker. Cut the yarn, slip stitches on a thread or stitch holder, now work left shoulder along the left diagonal shoulder on back piece as explained below. LEFT FRONT PIECE: Pick up stitches along left diagonal shoulder on back piece - begin from right side at the neck and pick up stitches out towards the armhole as follows: Begin by working as before over the 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches from left band with I-cord, i.e. slip 1 stitch purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1, work 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 stitches in garter stitch, then pick up 1 stitch in every worked row inside outermost stitch (= 16-16-18-18-18-20-20 stitches) = 22-22-24-24-25-27-27 stitches for shoulder. Insert 1 marker in piece in towards the neck - insert marker on the inside of the band stitches. All length measurements are done from this marker, measured in stitch direction. Work in stockinette stitch with 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches band with I-cord as before (work first row from wrong side). When piece measures 9-9-10-10-10-12-12 cm = 3½"-3½"-4"-4"-4"-4¾"-4¾" from marker, increase stitches for V-neck as follows: ROW 1 (= right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1 and band as before, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit the rest of row. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Purl until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain, work band as before. Now slip front pieces and back piece together and pick up stitches for sleeve as explained below. YOKE: ROW 1 (= right side): Begin from right side with stitches from left front piece: Work band as before, knit until 1 stitches remains on front piece, insert 1 marker on row, knit last stitch from front piece, pick up 18-18-20-20-20-22-22 stitches along the side of left front piece - pick up stitches inside outermost stitch, knit first stitch from back piece (= stitches for sleeve), insert 1 marker on row, knit until 1 stitch remains on back piece, insert 1 marker on row, knit last stitch on back piece, pick up 18-18-20-20-20-22-22 stitches along the side on right front piece - pick up stitches inside outermost stitch, knit first stitch from right front piece (= stitches for sleeve), insert 1 marker on row, knit until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain on right front piece, work band as before = 142-144-156-156-160-172-172 stitches. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Work band as before, purl until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain, work band as before. ROW 3 (= right side): Work band as before, increase 1 stitch towards the left (= for V-neck), knit until first marker, move marker on to right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move marker onto right needle, knit until next marker, move marker on to right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move marker on to right needle, knit until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain, increase 1 stitch towards the right (= for V-neck), work band as before (1 increase for V-neck and 1 increase for sleeve in each side = 6 stitches increased in total) = 148-150-162-162-166-178-178 stitches. ROW 4 (= wrong side): Work band as before, purl until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain, work band as before. ROW 5 (= right side): Work band as before, knit until first marker, move marker on to right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move marker on to right needle, knit until next marker, move marker on to right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move marker on to right needle, knit until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain, work band as before (= 4 stitches increased)= 152-154-166-166-170-182-182 stitches. ROW 6 (= wrong side): Work band as before, purl until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain, work band as before. AFTER 6TH ROW: Work 3rd to 6th ROW 2-2-2-2-1-1-0 more times (= 8-8-8-8-4-4-0 rows worked), then work 3rd and 4th ROW 1-0-0-0-1-0-0 time (= 2-0-0-0-2-0-0 rows worked). 16-14-14-14-12-10-6 rows have been worked in total on yoke, 7-6-6-6-6-5-4 increases have been done in total for V-neck (including the 3 increases before yoke began) and 7-6-6-6-5-4-2 increases have been done for sleeves = 28-27-29-29-30-31-30 stitches on each front piece, 34-32-34-34-32-32-28 stitches on each sleeve and 54-56-60-60-62-66-66 stitches on back piece = 178-174-186-186-186-192-182 stitches. Now increase both on sleeves and on body while at the same time continuing increase for V-neck as before (increases for V-neck are not noted on the next 2 row because they continue on every 4th row as before). Increase on body 2 stitches inside marker so that there are 2 stitches between increase for body and increase for sleeve - work next row as follows: ROW 1 (= right side): Work band as before and knit (remember increase for V-neck if necessary) until 2 stitches remain on front piece before first marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 2, move marker on to right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move the marker on to right needle, knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until 2 stitches on back piece remain before next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 2, move marker on to right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move marker on to right needle, knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain (+ increase for V-neck if necessary), work band as before (= 8 stitches increased + V-neck increases if they have been worked on this row), i.e. 1 stitch increased on each side of 2 stitches in every transition between body and sleeve. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Work band as before, purl until 6-6-6-6-7-7-7 stitches remain, work band as before. Work 1st and 2nd ROW 5-7-8-10-12-14-16 times in total (= 10-14-16-20-24-28-32 rows worked). 9-10-10-11-12-12-12 increases have been done in total for V-neck (including all previous increases), 12-13-14-16-17-18-18 more times for sleeve and 5-7-8-10-12-14-16 more times for body = 35-38-41-44-48-52-54 stitches on each front piece, 44-46-50-54-56-60-60 stitches on each sleeve and 64-70-76-80-86-94-98 stitches on back piece = 222-238-258-276-294-318-326 stitches. 3-3-3-2-2-2-2 more increases remain for V-neck - the last increases are done on body. Sleeve measures approx. 13-14-15-17-18-19-19 cm = 5⅛"-5½"-6"-6¾"-7"-7½"-7½" - when the jacket is folded double at the shoulder piece should measure approx. 19-20-21-23-24-26-26 cm = 7½"-8"-8¼"-9"-9½"-10¼"-10¼" from the edge on shoulder and down along the armhole. If the garment is shorter than this, continue until correct measurements without increases. Now divide yoke for body and sleeves. DIVIDING FOR BODY AND SLEEVES: AT THE SAME as next row is worked divide yoke for body and sleeves as follows: Work 35-38-41-44-48-52-54 stitches as before (= front piece), slip the next 44-46-50-54-56-60-60 stitches on a thread for sleeve, cast on 6-6-6-8-10-10-14 new stitches on row (= in the side mid under sleeve), and work the next 64-70-76-80-86-94-98 stitches in stockinette stitch (= back piece), slip the next 44-46-50-54-56-60-60 stitches on a thread for sleeve, cast on 6-6-6-8-10-10-14 new stitches on row (= in the side mid under sleeve) and work the last 36-37-41-44-48-52-54 stitches as before (= front piece). Finish body and sleeves separately. BODY: Work stockinette stitch and bands as before while AT THE SAME TIME continuing the increase for V-neck on every 4th row 3-3-3-2-2-2-2 more times = 152-164-176-188-206-222-238 stitches. Then work stockinette stitch and band as before without increasing - remember BUTTONHOLES on right band - read explanation above. Work until piece measures 47-49-51-52-54-56-58 cm = 18½"-19¼"-20"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾" from cast-on edge mid back. On next row from right side begin rib while AT THE SAME TIME increasing 29-31-35-37-39-41-47 stitches evenly on row - read INCREASE TIP (do not increase over bands), work as follows: Switch to circular needle size 4 MM = US 6, work band as before, work rib (= knit 1 and purl 1) – remember increase until 7-7-7-7-8-8-8 stitches remain, knit 1 and work band as before = 181-195-211-225-245-263-285 stitches. When rib measures 3-3-3-4-4-4-4 cm = 1⅛"-1⅛"-1⅛"-1½"-1½"-1½"-1½", bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl – or bind off with Italian bind-off. Jacket measures approx. 50-52-54-56-58-60-62 cm = 19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜" from cast-on edge mid back and approx. 52-54-56-58-60-62-64 cm = 20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼" from the shoulder. SLEEVES: Slip 44-46-50-54-56-60-60 sleeve stitches from one thread on to needle size 5.5 MM = US 9 and pick in addition up 1 stitch in each of the 6-6-6-8-10-10-14 stitches cast on under sleeve - read SLEEVE TIP = 50-52-56-62-66-70-74 stitches. Insert 1 marker in the middle of the 6-6-6-8-10-10-14 new stitches under sleeve - round begins at the marker thread. Work stockinette stitch in the round on needle - AT THE SAME TIME when 1 round has been worked after division, decrease mid under sleeve – read DECREASE TIP and decrease as follows: Decrease 2 stitches 2-2-2-2-3-3-3 times on every other round, then decrease 2 stitches 2-2-4-6-6-7-8 times every 3-3-3-3-2-2-2 cm = 1⅛"-1⅛"-1⅛"-1⅛"-¾"-¾"-¾" = 42-44-44-46-48-50-52 stitches on needle. Work until sleeve measures 38-39-37-35-35-33-34 cm = 15"-15¼"-14½"-13¾"-13¾"-13"-13⅜" from division. Switch to double pointed needles size 4 MM = US 6 and work rib (= knit 1 and purl 1) while AT THE SAME TIME increasing 8-8-10-10-10-10-10 stitches evenly on 1st round = 50-52-54-56-58-60-62 stitches. When rib measures 3-3-3-4-4-4-4 cm = 1⅛"-1⅛"-1⅛"-1½"-1½"-1½"-1½" bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl – or bind off with Italian bind-off. Sleeve measures approx. 41-42-40-39-39-37-38 cm = 16⅛"-16½"-15¾"-15¼"-15¼"-14½"-15" from division and approx. 54-56-55-56-57-56-57 cm = 21¼"-22"-21⅝"-22"-22½"-22"-22½" from pick up edge on shoulder. ASSEMBLY: Sew buttons on to left front piece. |
