Can I use a different yarn than the one mentioned in the pattern?

Yes, as long as the yarn can be worked on the same knitting tension/gauge. Always swatch to make sure you get the same number of stitches in width and rows in height as given in the pattern.

Remember that different yarns with different textures, will give the garment different looks. The yardage/length may also be different, so when substituting always calculate the number of yards needed, in order to know the amount of yarn you need.

Here's an example of how to calculate the amount of an alternative yarn (from the same yarn group) needed for a pattern:

The pattern requires 300g of yarn X.
Yarn X runs 170m per 50g, which means 6 balls (of yarn X) x 170 m = 1020 m of yarn needed.
You want to use yarn Y. This yarn runs 150m per 50g.
1020m / 150m = 6.8 = 7 balls of yarn Y needed to replace yarn X.

You can also try working with yarn from a different Yarn Group on your pattern by replacing the yarns as follows:

  • 2 threads A = 1 thread C
  • 3 threads A = 1 thread D
  • 4 threads A = 1 thread E
  • 8 threads A = 1 thread F
  • 2 threads B = 1 thread D
  • 2 threads C = 1 thread E
  • 4 threads C = 1 thread F
  • 2 threads E = 1 thread F
  • 1 thread A + 1 thread C = 1 thread D
  • 2 threads A + 1 thread C = 1 thread E

Here's an example of how to calculate the amount of 2 threads of Nepal (C) as alternative yarn needed for a pattern in 1 thread Eskimo (E):

The pattern requires 1150g of yarn E.
Yarn E runs 50m per 50g, which means 23 balls (of yarn E) x 50 m = 1150 m of yarn E needed.
You want to use yarn (Cx2). This yarn runs 75m per 50g.
1150m / 75m = 15,3 balls x 2 = 31 balls of (C) needed to replace yarn E.

Here are two different examples of how to calculate the amount of 1 thread from group C like DROPS AIR OR DROPS BIG MERINO as alternative yarn needed for a pattern in 2 threads from group A like: 1 thread Baby Alpaca Silk (BAS) and 1 thread Kid Silk (KS):

The pattern requires 300g BAS + 125g KS.
Yarn BAS runs 167m per 50g, which means 6 balls x 167m = 1002 m of BAS needed.
Yarn KS runs 200m per 25g, which means 5 balls x 200m = 1000 m of KS needed.
You want to use DROPS AIR. This yarn runs 130m per 50g.
1000m/130m = 7,7 balls = 8 balls of (AIR) needed to replace 1 BAS + 1 KS.
OR! You want to use DROPS BIG MERINO. This yarn runs 75m per 50g.
1000m/75m = 13,3 balls = 14 balls of (BIG MERINO) needed to replace 1 BAS + 1 KS.

Bon tricot!

Ich möchte Cotton Viskose durch Belle ersetzen. Gibt das Probleme?

DROPS Design 17.05.2018 - 09:15:

Liebe Frau Hirsch, DROPS Cotton Viscose gehörte zur Garngruppe A und DROPS Belle gehört zur Garngruppe B, am besten ersetzen Sie Cotton Viscose durch ein anderes Garn Garngruppe A. Viel Spaß beim stricken!

Come posso fare? Grazie

Alessandra 11.02.2018 - 00:32:

Corrispondeva a quello indicato?

Buon lavoro!

Which yarn would i have to use to replace a group B yarn? Could I use one strand alpaca and one lace? I know you register Lace as group A yarn, but it's a 2ply yarn, so i was wondering if it could be combined with another one of group A (like alpaca, or babyalpaca because they are 5ply yarns) to replace a yarn group B yarn.

DROPS Design 11.12.2017 - 11:13:

Dear Ginny, we do not have any yarn alternative for group B but depending on your tension, you can make your own swatch with different needle size to check out fabric and tension. Remember your DROPS store can also assist you if needed, even per mail or telephone. Happy knitting!

LUCQUIN Corinne 02.11.2017 - 17:45:

Sylvia O'mahony 26.10.2017 - 14:33:

Is there a way to adapt a pattern for group c yarn to a group b yarn please? I've read how to adapt c to a by doubling but not sure if it's possible to get a good result changing from c to b, using 5mm needles. TIA

DROPS Design 27.10.2017 - 10:25:

Dear Mrs O'mahony, you can try different needle size to check your gauge and see how the texture will look at. Remember for such individual assistance your DROPS store will help you, even per mail or telephone. Happy knitting!

Anita Stensrud 30.07.2017 - 11:55:

Hei 😃 Jeg vil strikke med 2tråder flora. Hvilken pinne str burde jeg bruke? Mvh Anita

DROPS Design 09.08.2017 - 08:25:

Hei Anita.

Jane Curley 03.07.2017 - 10:49:

Would Air & Alpaca Boucle blend ok to make a group E? Thank you Jane

DROPS Design 04.07.2017 - 09:17:

Dear Mrs Curley, 2 strands yarn group C = 1 strand yarn groupe E, but remember to always make a swatch before to check tension, needle size etc... so that you are sure to get the desired texture for your fabric. Happy knitting!

Hej . 30 maskar -40 varv =10+10 cm. Vilket Drops garn kan jag använda istället.Stickar mest i Drops garn idag. Mvh Susanne

Linda Benjaminsen 02.06.2017 - 10:42:

Hei!

Hanne 03.05.2017 - 15:46:

Jeg vil gerne strikke Princess Chantilly by Drops design - babytæppe.
