Increase or decrease 1 st on every 3rd and 4th row alternately

Increase or decrease 1 st on every 3rd and 4th row alternately

You can inc/dec on every 3rd and 4th row/round/cm alternately to get a smooth inc/dec in f.ex a raglan, in a V-neck or if you would like to shape your work, we sometimes write:
Increase or decrease 1 st on every 3rd and 4th row/round/cm alternately a total of 10 times!

Example 1: You inc/dec 1 st on every 3rd and 4th row/round/cm alternately a total of 10 times.
Do like this:
Work 2 rows, inc/dec on the 3rd row.
Work 3 rows, inc/dec on the 4th row.
Work 2 rows, inc/dec on the 3rd row.
Work 3 rows, inc/dec on the 4th row.
Repeat until you have inc/dec a total of 10 times.

Example 2: You inc/dec 1 st on every 1,5 and 2 cm alternately a total of 10 times.
Do like this:
Work 1,5 cm, inc/dec.
Work 2 cm, inc/dec.
Work 1,5 cm, inc/dec.
Work 2 cm, inc/dec.
Repeat until you have inc/dec a total of 10 times.

NB! If you crochet or knit back and forth on the needles, you inc/dec both on the right side and the wrong side. Feel free to use a marker so that you easily can see where to inc/dec.
If you crochet or knit round on a circular needle, all the inc/dec happens from the right side.
Feel free to read the inc/dec-tip in the pattern, where we often clarifies where and how to inc/dec.

Hi! I recently purchased a pattern for a sweater but there's a part of it that puzzles me because I don't know how to interpret it. The pattern says to do a row of dec every 6th row 3 times and every 4th row 6 times. It doesn't specify if I need to do them alternately or anything, the initial number of stitches is 74 and I need to end with 46st. The decrease row is [K2, p1, k1, ssk, k to last 6 sts, k2tog, k1, p1, k2]. I'd be really grateful if you could help me with this. Thank you

20.01.2023 - 20:53:

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Eva, if it's not stated anywhere that you have to work alternately, then just work each instruction in the order they are written. First decrease every 6th row. That is, work 5 rows normally and work the decrease in the 6th row. Repeat in the 12th and 18th row. After this, you will start decreasing every 4th row 6 times. If you start counting from the row after the last decrease row, decrease in the following rows: 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, 20th and 24th rows. Happy knitting!

14.01.2023 - 20:41:

DROPS Design answered:

Buonasera Anna, se il modello dice di diminuire in modo alternato ogni 2 e 3 ferri, deve lavorare 1 ferro e poi diminuire e per la diminuzione successiva lavorare 2 ferri e poi diminuire, e così via. Buon lavoro!

In the Winter awakens, what does these 2 instructions mean in the ''dog sweater'' part : 1. Continue the rib but increase 1 stitch in every 2nd knitted section. (What is a 2nd knitted section?) 2. increase 1 stitch in the remaining knitted sections (What are knitted sections?) Thank you!

30.11.2022 - 02:59:

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Alexandre, you first work in rib K2, P2, then increase every other P2 into P3 like this: (K2, P2, K2, increase 1, P2) so that you have then (K2, P2, K2, P3), then increase all remaining P2 into P3 to get (K2, P3) all the way. This video shows how you can increase the number of P-stitches in a rib pattern and might help you. Happy knitting!

Please help me understand what this means.. Inc 1 st each end of needle on next and every following alt row 3 times more.... And... Inc 1 st each end of next and every following 4th row twice more, Thank you in advance.

12.07.2022 - 20:49:

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Irene, for the first tip: in the first row you increase 1 st at the beginning and end of the row. The next (2nd) row is worked with no increases. In the 3rd row you work the same increases as in the first row. In the 4th row, you work no increases. Repeat increases as in rows 1-3 once more. So you should have, in total: Rows 1, 3, 5 and 7 with increases and Rows 2, 4, 6 with no increases. For the 2nd tip: work increases in first row. Then work 3 rows without increases. In the next row increase again. Work 3 rows without increases and increase again in the next row. Happy knitting!

On the beret for le petit explorateur, the instruction says “Continue increasing like this, begin with row K1 and K6,7,8 etc alternately.” What does this mean?

05.05.2022 - 16:37:

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Marilyn, it means that, in round 21, you should continue as before, knitting the whole round in uneven rounds. Meanwhile, in round 22, you work: k6, inc 1 st in next st, * inc 1 st in every 11 th st*. Round 23, knit the whole round. Round 24: k7, inc 1 st in next st, * inc 1 st in every 12th st*. So, in each uneven round you knit the whole round and in every even round, you knit 1 more stitch before starting the increases (k6, k7, k8..) and then you leave one more stitch between increases (every 10th, every 11th, every 12th...). Happy knitting!

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Jnna, it looks like that you won't increase on every other row in your size, only on every row and a total of 8 times - but to be sure, please ask your question under the pattern you are working on, so that we can check together. Happy knitting!

Hi! In the pattern Ahoy Mates for the sleeves, after the ribbed cuff and you have increased , it says “at the same time increase 2 std. mid under arm a total of 25 times, every 4th and 5 th row “. Where do you start to do this increase? Right after the initial increase or half way up the arm. If it’s half way up the arm I don’t think I’d have enough rows to increase 25 times?? But it says “ mid under arm”. Thanks for helping Rhonda

30.03.2022 - 00:10:

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Rhonda, start to increase the 2 sts mid under sleeve on the 4th row, increase next time on 5th row and continue increasing alternately on every 4th and every 5th row. Mid under sleeve means to increase 1 st at the end of the round + 1 st at the beg of the round, for ex: work until 1 st remains before the end of the round, YO, K2 (begin of round is in the middle of these 2 sts), YO. On next round knit the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Happy knitting!

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Mrs Gunkel, this is the lesson you will need: take the number of sts on your row for your size and divide it by 32 , depending on the result (see example 1,2 and 3) work the decreases evenly as explained (instead of K2 tog, work 2 sts together). Happy crocheting!

Dear Mrs Lymburner, in A.1 and A.3 on front and back piece continue as before, in A.1 and A.3 on sleeves, increase with a yarn over as before, but now worked the new stitches in garter stitch (= knit 1 round, purl 1 round, knit 1 round). Happy knitting!

DROPS Design answered:

Bon tricot!
