------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH: Knit all rows, from both the right and wrong side. 1 ridge in height = knit 2 rows. SIMPLE ITALIAN CAST-ON: Half the number of stitches are cast on for the neckline, then this number is doubled, minus 3 stitches, on the first row. Work a start-loop with color Light Beige DROPS Merino Extra Fine. Hold the circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4 together with a double pointed needle size 3.5 MM = US 4 and place the start-loop round these 2 needles. Cast on 31-33-35-39-41-41 stitches in the usual way around both needles. Remove the double pointed needle and continue with just the circular needle. Now increase the stitch count as follows: ROW 1 (wrong side): Work 1 GARTER STITCH – read explanation above, * Purl 1, make 1 new stitch as follows: Take the right needle towards you, then under and behind the piece, up in front of the strand and pull the needle with the strand to the front of the piece (= 1 new stitch on the right needle) *, work from *-* until there are 2 stitches left, purl 1 and work 1 garter stitch = 59-63-67-75-79-79 stitches (stitch-number is doubled, minus 3 stitches). Change to circular needle size 2.5 MM = US 1.5. ROW 2 (right side): Work 1 garter stitch, * knit 1, purl 1 (= picked-up strand) *, work from *-* until there are 2 stitches left, knit 1 and work 1 garter stitch. ROW 3: Knit above knit and purl above purl with 1 garter stitch on each side. Repeat row 3 until the rib measures 2-2-2½-2½-3-3 cm = ¾"-¾"-1"-1"-1⅛"-1⅛", with the next row from the right side. KNITTING TIP: To avoid the knitting gauge becoming tight when working pattern, it is important that the strands at the back are not tight. Use a size larger needle when working pattern if this is necessary. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. The pattern is worked in stockinette stitch. Choose diagram for your size. Remember the diagrams are read from left to right when working from the wrong side. INCREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to increase evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g., 59 stitches) minus 5 stitches on each side which are not increased, and divide the remaining 49 stitches by the number of increases to be made (e.g., 8) = 6.1. In this example, increase as follows in approx. each 6th stitch. Do not increase across the 5 outermost stitches. This symmetrical method of increasing gives 1 new stitch. Follow points 1-4: 1. Hold the working strand behind the piece. Slip the first stitch on the left needle loosely onto the right needle purl-wise. 2. Insert the left needle behind the slipped stitch and between the slipped stitch and the next stitch on the right needle. 3. Make 1 yarn-over round the right needle and pull it through the stitch, giving 1 new stitch on the right needle. 4. Slip the front stitch-loop off the left needle, then knit 1 through the front of the second stitch-loop. 1 stitch increased. SLEEVE TIP: When knitting up stitches under the sleeve, you can be left with a small hole in the transition between the stitches on the body and sleeve. This hole can be closed by picking up the strand between 2 stitches and working this strand twisted together with the first stitch between body and sleeve. DECREASE TIP: Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread as follows: Work until there are 2 stitches left before the marker-thread, knit 2 together, marker-thread, slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased). BUTTONHOLES: Work the buttonholes on the right band from the right side as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Make 1 yarn over, knit 2 together (making sure these 2 stitches are 1 purled stitch outermost on the left needle and 1 knitted stitch). ROW 2 (wrong side): Work the rib as before, knitting the yarn over to leave a hole. Work 6-6-6-7-7-7 buttonholes evenly spaced, when the band measures with 1-1½ cm = ⅜"-½". The top buttonhole is worked 1½ cm = ½" below the top edge and the bottom buttonhole 2-2-2-2-3-3 cm = ¾"-¾"-¾"-¾"-1⅛"-1⅛" above the bottom edge, with the remaining 4-4-4-5-5-5 buttonholes evenly spaced between (approx. 4-5-6-5-5½-6 cm = 1½"-2"-2⅜"-2"-2⅛"-2⅜" between each one). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JACKET – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE. The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The neck and yoke are worked back and forth with circular needle, from mid front and top down, increasing for the yoke. When the yoke is finished, it is divided for body and sleeves and the body continued back and forth, while the sleeves wait. The sleeves are worked in the round, top down. Stitches are knitted up along each front piece for the bands, which are worked back and forth. If there is a «0» in your chosen size, skip the information and go straight to the next instruction. NECK: Work SIMPLE ITALIAN CAST-ON – read explanation above, or cast on 59-63-67-75-79-79 stitches slightly loosely, with circular needle size 2.5 MM = US 1.5 and color Light Beige DROPS Merino Extra Fine. Follow the explanation for rib in the Italian cast-on or work rib as follows from the right side: 1 garter stitch, rib (knit 1 and purl 1) until there are 2 stitches left, knit 1 and 1 garter stitch. Continue this rib for 2-2-2½-2½-3-3 cm = ¾"-¾"-1"-1"-1⅛"-1⅛", with the last row from the wrong side. Insert 1 marker inside the garter stitch on one side (= mid-front); the piece is now measured from here. YOKE: Change to circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4. Work the next row from the right side as follows: 1 garter stitch, 4 stockinette stitches, work 49-53-57-65-69-69 stockinette stitches and increase 8-12-16-16-20-20 stitches evenly across these stitches – read INCREASE TIP, work 4 stockinette stitches and 1 garter stitch = 67-75-83-91-99-99 stitches. Continue stockinette stitch with 1 garter stitch on each side. Remember to maintain the knitting gauge. After 2-2-6-6-10-10 rows of stockinette stitch, begin working PATTERN from the right side as follows – read explanation above, and read KNITTING TIP: 1 garter stitch, work A.1 until there are 2 stitches left, work A.2 and 1 garter stitch. Continue this pattern, increasing as shown in A.1. In addition increase on each row marked with an arrow in A.1 as follows – remember INCREASE TIP (do not increase across the 5 outermost stitches on each side): Arrow-1: Increase 16-16-24-24-32-32 stitches evenly spaced = 83-91-107-115-131-131 stitches. Arrow-2: Increase 16-16-24-24-24-24 stitches evenly spaced = 99-107-131-139-155-155 stitches. Arrow-3: Increase 16-16-16-16-24-24 stitches evenly spaced = 115-123-147-155-179-179 stitches. Arrow-4: Increase 8-8-8-8-16-16 stitches evenly spaced = 123-131-155-163-195-195 stitches. Arrow-5: Increase 16-16-16-16-16-24 stitches evenly spaced = 139-147-171-179-211-219 stitches. Arrow-6: Increase 16 stitches evenly spaced in all sizes. NOTE: In the 3 smallest sizes, adjust the increases so they are only worked in sections of background color = 155-163-187-195-227-235 stitches. When the yoke measures 10-11-12-13-14-14 cm = 4"-4⅜"-4¾"-5⅛"-5½"-5½" from the marker mid-front, divide for the body and sleeves. A.1 and A.2 continue on the body and sleeves but make sure the increases are finished before dividing. DIVIDE FOR BODY AND SLEEVES Work 23-25-27-29-33-35 stitches as before (= front piece), place the next 32-32-40-40-48-48 stitches on a stitch holder for the sleeve, cast on 8 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work 45-49-53-57-65-69 stitches (back piece), place the next 32-32-40-40-48-48 stitches on a stitch holder for the sleeve, cast on 8 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work the last 23-25-27-29-33-35 stitches as before (= front piece). The body and sleeves are finished separately. BODY: = 107-115-123-131-147-155 stitches. Continue the pattern from the yoke, i.e., A.1 and A.2, back and forth with 1 garter stitch on each side. NOTE: If the piece is divided in the middle of a pattern-border, the pattern might not fit under the sleeves. Continue the pattern from the yoke as far as possible under each sleeve. The next pattern-border will fit. When A.1 and A.2 are finished in height, continue with stockinette stitch and color Light Beige. NOTE: In the 2 smallest sizes the pattern will be finished just before starting the rib; go straight to rib after finishing A.1 and A.2. Work until the piece measures 23-23-28-31-31-33 cm = 9"-9"-11"-12¼"-31 -13" from the marker mid-front. On the next row from the right side, begin the rib. AT THE SAME TIME increase 14-16-18-18-20-22 stitches evenly on the row (do not increase across the edge-stitches) = 121-131-141-149-167-177 stitches. Work as follows: Change to circular needle size 2.5 MM = US 1.5. Work 1 garter stitch, rib (knit 1 and purl 1 – remember to increase) until there are 2 stitches left, knit 1 and 1 garter stitch. When the rib measures 2-2-2-2-3-3 cm = ¾"-¾"-¾"-¾"-1⅛"-1⅛", bind off with knit above knit and purl above purl or work Italian bind-off. The jacket measures approx. 25-25-30-33-34-36 cm = 9¾"-9¾"-11¾"-13"-13⅜"-14¼" from the marker mid-front and 28-28-33-36-38-40 cm = 11"-11"-13"-14¼"-15"-15¾" from the shoulder. SLEEVES: Place the 32-32-40-40-48-48 sleeve-stitches from one stitch holder onto circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4 and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 8 cast-on stitches under the sleeve – read SLEEVE TIP = 40-40-48-48-56-56 stitches. Insert a marker-thread in the middle of the 8 new stitches under the sleeve. The round starts by the marker-thread. Continue the pattern from the yoke in the round. AT THE SAME TIME, after 1 round, decrease mid-under the sleeve – read DECREASE TIP as follows: Decrease 2 stitches every 2nd round 0-0-2-2-2-2 times, then 2 stitches every 1½ cm = ½" 0-0-2-2-2-2 times = 40-40-40-40-48-48 stitches. Continue the pattern until the sleeve measures approx. 9-12-14-16-20-26 cm = 3½"-4¾"-5½"-6¼"-8"-10¼" from the division finishing after a complete pattern-border in height. Finish with color Light Beige. Change to double pointed needles size 2.5 MM = US 1.5. Work rib with color Light Beige (knit 1, purl 1), AT THE SAME TIME increase 2-2-2-2-4-4 stitches evenly on the first round = 42-42-42-42-52-52 stitches. When the rib measures 2-2-2-2-3-3 cm = ¾"-¾"-¾"-¾"-1⅛"-1⅛", bind off with rib or work Italian bind-off. The sleeve measures approx. 11-14-16-18-23-29 cm = 4⅜"-5½"-6¼"-7"-9"-11⅜" from the division. LEFT BAND: Start from the right side on the left front piece, using circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4 and color Light Beige. Knit up 64-64-76-84-90-92 stitches along the whole edge, inside the 1 garter stitch (approx. 26 stitches per 10 cm = 4", with the stitch count divisible by 2). ROW 1 (wrong side): Work 1 garter stitch, rib (purl 1 and knit 1) until there are 3 stitches left, purl 1 and 2 garter stitches. ROW 2 (right side): Work 2 garter stitches, rib (knit 1 and purl 1) until there are 2 stitches left, knit 1 and 1 garter stitch. Work ROWS 1 and 2 for 2½-2½-2½-2½-3-3 cm = 1"-1"-1"-1"-1⅛"-1⅛". Bind off with knit above knit and purl above purl, or work Italian bind-off. RIGHT BAND: Knit up stitches along the right front piece and work in the same way as the left band but with 2 garter stitches by the neck and 1 garter stitch at the bottom. When the band measures 1-1½ cm = ⅜"-½", work 6-6-6-7-7-7 BUTTONHOLES evenly spaced – read explanation above. Continue the band to the same width as the left band and bind off in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the buttons onto the left band. |
