------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge in height = Knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. KNITTING TIP: To avoid the knitting gauge becoming tighter when working pattern it is important that the strands at the back are not tight. Use a size larger needle when working pattern if this is a problem. INCREASE 4 STITCHES AS FOLLOWS: Knit 1 in the knitted stitch but do not slip the stitch from the left needle, make 1 yarn over the right needle, knit 1 in the same stitch but do not slip the stitch from the needle, make 1 yarn over the right needle and knit 1 in the same stitch. Slip the stitch off the needle (= 4 stitches increased). INCREASE TIP (evenly spaced): All increases worked from the right side! To work out how to increase evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 161 stitches) minus bands (e.g. 10 stitches) and divide the remaining stitches by the number of increases to be made (e.g. 34) = 4.4. In this example, increase by making 1 yarn over alternately after each 4th and 5th stitch. Do not increase on bands. On the next row (wrong side) purl the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. BUTTONHOLE: Work buttonholes on the right band (when the garment is worn). Work from the right side when there are 3 stitches left on the row as follows: Make 1 yarn over, knit 2 together and knit 1. On the next row (wrong side), knit the yarn over to leave a hole. The first buttonhole is worked after the rib on the neck. The other 5-6-6-6-6-6 buttonholes are worked with approx. 8-9 cm = 3⅛"-3½" between each one. DECREASE TIP (for sleeves): Decrease 1 stitch on either side of the marker thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (= 2 stitches decreased). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JACKET – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE. The piece is worked back and forth with circular needle, from mid front and top down. The sleeves are worked in the round with double pointed needles/short circular needle, top down. The neck is folded double and sewn down to finish. NECK: Cast on 87-93-99-99-105-105 stitches (including 1 edge stitch on each side) with circular needle size 4 mm = US 6 and beige. Purl 1 row (= wrong side). Now work rib as follows: 1 stitch in GARTER STITCH – read description above, knit 1, purl 2, knit 1, * purl 2, knit 1 *, repeat from *-* until there are 7 stitches left on the row, purl 2, knit 1, purl 2, knit 1 and 1 stitch in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 10 cm = 4"; adjust so the last row is worked from the wrong side. Insert 1 marker here; the yoke is measured from this marker. YOKE: Change to circular needle size 5 mm = US 8. Remember BUTTONHOLES on the right band – read description above. Then continue as follows from the right side: 5 stitches in garter stitch, * purl 2, knit 1 *, repeat from *-* until there are 7 stitches left on the row, purl 2 and work 5 stitches in garter stitch. Continue with rib and garter stitch on the bands for 1 cm = ⅜", then increase 1 stitch in all purled sections = 113-121-129-129-137-137 stitches. Increase by making 1 yarn over at the end of each purled section; yarn overs are worked twisted on the next row to avoid holes. Continue with purl 3 in all purled sections. When the piece measures 5-5½-6-6½-7-7½ cm = 2"-2⅛"-2⅜"-2½"-2¾"-2⅞", work as follows from the right side: 5 stitches in garter stitch, * purl 3, knit 1, purl 3, INCREASE 4 STITCHES IN NEXT STITCH – read description above *, work from *-* until there are 12 stitches left on the row, purl 3, knit 1, purl 3 and 5 stitches in garter stitch = 161-173-185-185-197-197 stitches (you have increased in every 2nd knitted stitch). The next row is worked as follows from the wrong side: 5 stitches in garter stitch, * knit 3, purl 1 *, work until there are 8 stitches left on the row, knit 3 and 5 stitches in garter stitch. (From the right side you now work 5 stitches in garter stitch * purl 3, knit 1 *, repeat from *-* until there are 8 stitches left on the row, purl 3 and 5 stitches in garter stitch). Continue this pattern until the piece measures 10-11-12-13-14-15 cm = 4"-4⅜"-4¾"-5⅛"-5½"-6" from the marker on the neck. Work stockinette stitch with 5 stitches in garter stitch on each side for 0-0-1-1-2-2 cm = 0"-0"-⅜"-⅜"-¾"-¾", the piece measures approx. 10-11-13-14-16-17 cm = 4"-4⅜"-5⅛"-5½"-6¼"-6¾" from the marker thread. Now continue with pattern and increase stitches on the rows with arrows in the diagram: Work 5 stitches in garter stitch, A.1 until there are 6 stitches left on the row, work the first stitch in A.1 and then 5 stitches in garter stitch. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! Read KNITTING TIP and INCREASE TIP! ARROW-1: Increase 34-38-42-50-54-62 stitches evenly spaced = 195-211-227-235-251-259 stitches. ARROW-2: Increase 26-28-30-40-42-52 stitches evenly spaced = 221-239-257-275-293-311 stitches. ARROW-3: Increase 18-24-30-36-36-42 stitches evenly spaced = 239-263-287-311-329-353 stitches. ARROW-4: Increase 4-4-4-4-2-2 stitches evenly spaced = 243-267-291-315-331-355 stitches. There is 1 row left in A.1 and the piece measures approx. 19-20-22-23-25-26 cm = 7½"-8"-8¾"-9"-9¾"-10¼". Work the last row in the diagram from the wrong side as follows: Work the first 39-43-46-49-53-58 stitches (= front piece), place the next 48-52-58-64-64-66 stitches on a thread (sleeve) and cast on 6-6-6-8-10-12 new stitches on the needle (= in side under the sleeve), work the next 69-77-83-89-97-107 stitches (= back piece), place the next 48-52-58-64-64-66 stitches on a thread (sleeve) and cast on 6-6-6-8-10-12 new stitches on the needle (= in side under the sleeve), work the remaining 39-43-46-49-53-58 stitches (= front piece). THE PIECE IS NOW MEASURED FROM HERE! BODY: = 159-175-187-203-223-247 stitches. Now work pattern as follows (first row = right side): 5 stitches in garter stitch, work A.2 until there are 6 stitches left on the row, work the first row in A.2 and 5 stitches in garter stitch. AT THE SAME TIME increase stitches on each row with an arrow as follows: ARROW-5: Increase 4-4-0-0-4-4 stitches evenly spaced = 163-179-187-203-227-251 stitches. ARROW-6: Increase 4-0-4-0-0-0 stitches evenly spaced = 167-179-191-203-227-251 stitches. ARROW-7: Increase 0-1-2-3-5-7 stitches evenly spaced = 167-180-193-206-232-258 stitches. ARROW-8: Increase 0-5-4-3-1-5 stitches evenly spaced = 167-185-197-209-233-263 stitches. When A.2 has been completed in height, continue with beige, stockinette stitch and 5 stitches in garter stitch on each side. When the piece measures 26-27-27-28-28-29 cm = 10¼"-10⅝"-10⅝"-11"-11"-11⅜", increase 12 stitches evenly spaced with the 5 stitches in garter stitch on each side = 179-197-209-221-245-275 stitches. Change to circular needle size 4 mm = US 6. Work rib as follows: 5 stitches in garter stitch, * knit 1, purl 2 *, work from *-* until there are 6 stitches left on the row, knit 1 and 5 stitches in garter stitch. When the rib measures 5 cm = 2", bind off with garter stitch over garter stitch, knit over knit and purl over purl. The piece measures approx. 54-56-58-60-62-64 cm = 21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼" from the shoulder down. SLEEVE: Place the 48-52-58-64-64-66 stitches from the thread on the one side of the piece on double pointed needles/short circular needle size 5 mm = US 8 and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 6-6-6-8-10-12 stitches cast on under the sleeve = 54-58-64-72-74-78 stitches. Insert a marker thread in the middle of the 6-6-6-8-10-12 stitches under the sleeve. Allow the thread to follow your work onwards; it will be used when decreasing under the sleeve. Work pattern A.2 in the round. NOTE! Due to decreases under the sleeve the repeats in A.2 will not always fit. Therefore do not increase by the arrows in A.2 as on the body. When the piece measures 4 cm = 1½", start to decrease under the sleeve - read DECREASE TIP. Decrease like this every 5-4-3-2½-2-2 cm = 2"-1½"-1⅛"-1"-¾"-¾" a total of 6-7-9-12-12-13 times = 42-44-46-48-50-52 stitches. When A.2 has been completed, continue with beige and stockinette stitch until the sleeve measures 35-35-34-34-32-32 cm = 13¾"-13¾"-13⅜"-13⅜"-12½"-12½" from the division (there is approx. 5 cm = 2" left to finished length; you can try the jacket on and work to desired length). NOTE: Shorter measurements in larger sizes due to wider neck and longer yoke. Change to double pointed needles size 4 mm = US 6 and work 1 round where you increase 0-1-2-0-1-2 stitches evenly spaced = 42-45-48-48-51-54 stitches. Work rib (knit 1, purl 2) for 5 cm = 2". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. The sleeve measures approx. 40-40-39-39-37-37 cm = 15¾"-15¾"-15¼"-15¼"-14½"-14½". Work the other sleeve in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew buttons onto the left band. Fold the rib at the top of the neck to the wrong side and sew down to give a folded edge. Sew each side of the edge together mid front. To avoid the edge being tight and rolling down, it is important that the seam is elastic. |
