------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. The pattern is worked in stockinette stitch. KNITTING TIP: When working short rows, there will be a small hole after each turn. This hole can be closed by tightening the strand or using the technique German Short Rows as follows: Slip the first stitch purl-wise with the strand in front, take the strand over the right needle and tighten well from the back (2 loops on the needle). These 2 loops are worked together on the next row. INCREASE TIP: Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over on each side of 2 stitches (the marker-thread sits between these 2 stitches). On the next round, work the yarn overs as follows: BEFORE MARKER-THREAD (stitch twists towards the right): Slip the yarn over from the left to the right needle purl-wise, place it back onto the left needle by inserting the left needle through the back (the yarn-over is twisted). Knit through the stitch-loop which lies on the front of the needle to avoid a hole. AFTER MARKER-THREAD (stitch twists towards the left): Knit through the stitch-loop which lies on the back of the needle to avoid a hole. MEASURING TIP: All length-measurements are taken when holding the garment up, or the garment will be too long when worn. DOUBLE KNIT: ROW 1 (right side): * Knit 1, slip 1 stitch purl-wise onto the right needle, with the strand in front *, repeat from *-* until there is 1 stitch left, knit 1. ROW (wrong side): * Slip 1 stitch purl-wise onto the right needle, with the strand in front, knit 1 *, repeat from *-* until there is 1 stitch left, slip 1 stitch purl-wise onto the right needle, with the strand in front. AFTER ROW 2: Repeat ROWS 1 and 2 to finished length. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- TROUSERS - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in the round, top down. First a belt is worked with pattern and a lining, then the trousers are worked downwards, before being divided for the legs. Each leg is finished separately. Patterned cuffs and a lining are worked at the bottom of each leg. The braces are worked back and forth with double knit, then sewn to the trousers. The linings are folded to the inside and sewn down. A bow is worked to finish. LINING (for the belt): Cast on 120-132-144-156-168 stitches with circular needle size 3 MM = US 2.5 and color Black DROPS Alpaca. Do not cast on too tightly. Work stockinette stitch in the round for 10 cm = 4". Remember to maintain the knitting gauge. Purl 1 round (folding-edge). BELT: Work A.1 (12 stitches) in the round (10-11-12-13-14 repeats). When A.1 is finished, the belt measures approx. 11 cm = 4⅜" and the piece measures 21 cm = 8¼" from the cast-on edge (including the lining). TROUSERS: Continue with color Black. Knit 1 round and increase 40 stitches evenly spaced = 160-172-184-196-208 stitches. Insert 1 marker after the first 40-43-46-49-52 stitches (mid-front); the piece is now measured from here. In addition, insert 2 marker-threads as follows: Count 40-43-46-49-52 stitches, insert 1 marker-thread (mid-front), count 80-86-92-98-104 stitches, insert 1 marker-thread (mid-back), with the round beginning at the side. For a better shape, you now work short rows back and forth across the back of the trousers: ROW 1 (right side): Knit to 6-7-7-8-8 stitches past the marker-thread mid-back, turn – read KNITTING TIP. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl 12-14-14-16-16, turn. ROW 3 (right side): Knit to 6-7-7-8-8 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 4 (wrong side): Purl to 6-7-7-8-8 stitches past the previous turn, turn. Repeat ROWS 3 and 4 onwards until you have turned a total of 10 times (5 times each side, with the last row from the wrong side). After working ROW 4 for the last time, turn and work back to the beginning of the round (= the side). Work stockinette stitch in the round until the piece measures 16-20-22-23-27 cm = 6¼"-8"-8¾"-9"-10⅝" from the marker mid-front. Now increase 1 stitch on each side of both marker-threads as follows – read INCREASE TIP (4 increased stitches). Increase like this every 2nd round a total of 7 times = 188-200-212-224-236 stitches. After the last increase, the piece measures approx. 20-24-26-27-31 cm = 8"-9½"-10¼"-10⅝"-12¼" from the marker mid-front. Now bind off 6 stitches mid-front and mid-back as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the first marker-thread, bind off 6 stitches, work until there are 3 stitches left before the second marker-thread and place these 88-94-100-106-112 stitches on a stitch holder for the leg, bind off 6 stitches The beginning of the round for the right leg is here. Each leg is finished separately. LEG: = 88-94-100-106-112 stitches. Insert 1 marker-thread at the beginning of the round (inside leg). Work stockinette stitch in the round. When the leg measures 2 cm =¾" from the division, decrease 0-2-0-2-0 stitches evenly on the round = 88-92-100-104-112 stitches. When the leg measures 6-13-14-18-22 cm = 2⅜"-5⅛"-5½"-7"-8¾" from the division – read MEASURING TIP, decrease on the next round as follows: * Knit 2, knit 2 together *, work from *-* across all stitches = 66-69-75-78-84 stitches. Work A.2 in the round, AT THE SAME TIME decrease 6-5-7-6-8 stitches evenly on the first round = 60-64-68-72-76 stitches. When A.2 is finished, the leg measures approx. 10-17-18-22-26 cm = 4"-6¾"-7"-8¾"-10¼" from the division. LINING (for the leg): Continue with color Black. Purl 1 round (folding edge). Work stockinette stitch in the round for 4 cm = 1½". Bind off. BRACES: Use color Black and double pointed needles size 3 MM = US 2.5. Cast on 21 stitches. Work 2 braces in DOUBLE KNIT – read explanation above. Work until the braces measure 44-46-48-50-52 cm = 17¼"-18"-19"-19¾"-20½" when stretched slightly in length. The braces will stretch when holding the weight of the trousers. Bind off. The braces are approx. 4 cm = 1½" in width. ASSEMBLY: Fold the lining at the top of the belt to the inside and sew down using color Black. Sew in the first round worked with color black after the belt, making sure not to sew too tightly (sew in approx. every 2nd stitch). If the lining is too short or too long, adjust before sewing down. The lining should be 1 cm =⅜"shorter than the belt so it doesn’t roll outwards after being sewn down. Fold the lining at the bottom of the legs to the inside and sew down in the same way. Sew the 6 bind-off stitches between the legs to the opposite 6 bind-off stitches. Sew the braces to the belt next to each other mid-back, sewing them to the inside in the transition between the belt and the trousers; for extra stability you can sew a seam at both the top and the bottom of the lining. Sew the opposite ends of the braces to the front with 8-8-9-10-10 cm = 3⅛"-3⅛"-3½"-4"-4" between them; try the trousers on and adjust the length to the child’s height. BOW: The bow is worked in the round with a lining. Cast on 52 stitches with color Black and double pointed needles size 3 MM = US 2.5. ROUNDS 1-6: Knit. ROUND 7: Purl (folding edge). ROUNDS 8-20: Work A.2 once in height. You do not need to twist the strands together at the back. They will be covered by the lining. ROUND 21: Knit with color Black. ROUND 22: Purl (folding edge). ROUNDS 23-28: Knit. Bind off with knit. Sew the cast-on edge to the to the bind-off edge, edge to edge and not too tightly. The bow is in a ring. When flat it measures approx. 10 cm = 4" in width and 4 cm = 1½" in height. Work a band for the middle of the bow as follows: Cast on 9 stitches with color Black and double pointed needles size 3 MM = US 2.5. Work DOUBLE KNIT back and forth for 4 cm = 1½". Bind off. Sew the cast-on and bind-off edges together so the band forms a ring around the bow, making sure the seam on the bow and the band are at the back. Sew a couple of stitches to keep the band in place in the middle of the bow. Cut a trouser-elastic to the right length and thread it through the double-knitted band and tie the ends of the elastic together. |
