------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- INCREASE TIP-1 (from right side): INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT BEFORE MARKER: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row/round below, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the front loop. INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE LEFT AFTER MARKER: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row/round below, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the back loop. INCREASE TIP-2 (from wrong side): INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT BEFORE MARKER: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row/round below, pick up the strand from the front and purl through the back loop. INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE LEFT BEFORE MARKER: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row/round below, pick up the strand from the back and purl through the front loop. I-CORD: FIRST 3 STITCHES: Work like this on all rows: Slip 1 stitch purl-wise with the strand in front of the piece, knit 1, slip 1 stitch purl-wise with the strand in front of the piece. LAST 3 STITCHES: Work like this on all rows: Work until there are 3 stitches left, knit 1, slip 1 stitch purl-wise with the strand in front of the piece, knit 1. Work like this from both the right and wrong side. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- PONCHO - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The piece is worked top down. Cast on stitches for the neckline and work back and forth while increasing stitches each side until the correct stitch count is achieved and the neckline is finished. The piece is continued in the round until being divided for the split in each side. Each piece is finished separately. Stitches are knitted up around the neckline and a high neck is worked to finish. PONCHO: Cast on 38-38-42-42-46-46-50 stitches with circular needle size 10 MM = US 15, 1 strand DROPS Alpaca Bouclé and 1 strand DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk (2 strands). Purl 1 row from the wrong side. Insert 4 markers in the piece, without working the stitches and inserting the markers between 2 stitches. You increase for the saddle-shoulders by these markers. Count 1 stitch (= left front piece), insert marker-1 before the next stitch, count 10-10-12-12-14-14-16 stitches (= saddle-shoulder), insert marker-2 before the next stitch, count 16-16-16-16-16-16-16 stitches (= back piece), insert marker-3 before the next stitch, count 10-10-12-12-14-14-16 stitches (= saddle-shoulder), insert marker-1 before the next stitch. There is 1 stitches left after the last marker (= right front piece). Work stockinette stitch back and forth, increasing for the saddle-shoulders by the markers and increasing for the neckline as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit and increase 1 stitch BEFORE markers 1 and 3 and AFTER marker 2 and 4 (= 4 increased stitches), then cast on 1 stitch for the neckline at the end of the row = 43-43-47-47-51-51-55 stitches. ROW 2 (wrong side): Read INCREASE TIP-2. Purl and increase 1 stitch BEFORE markers 4 and 2 and AFTER markers 3 and 1 (= 4 stitches increased), then cast on 1 stitch for the neckline at the end of the row = 48-48-52-52-56-56-60 stitches. The number of shoulder-stitches remains the same, the number of stitches on the front and back pieces increases. Work ROWS 1 and 2 one more time (4 rows worked) =58-58-62-62-66-66-70 stitches. Now work and increase as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit and increase 1 stitch BEFORE markers 1 and 3 and AFTER markers 2 and 4 (= 4 increased stitches), then cast on 2 stitches for the neckline at the end of the row = 64-64-68-68-72-72-76 stitches. ROW 2 (wrong side): Remember INCREASE TIP-2. Purl and increase 1 stitch BEFORE markers 4 and 2 and AFTER markers 3 and 1 (= 4 increased stitches), then cast on 2 stitches for the neckline at the end of the row = 70-70-74-74-78-78-82 stitches. ROW 3 (right side): Knit and increase 1 stitch BEFORE markers 1 and 3 and AFTER markers 2 and 4 (= 4 stitches increased), then cast on 6 stitches for the neckline at the end of the row = 80-80-84-84-88-88-92 stitches. The neckline is finished. Continue working stockinette stitch as described below. Remember to maintain the knitting gauge. ROUND 1: Knit in the round and increase 1 stitch BEFORE markers 1 and 3 and AFTER markers 2 and 4 (= 4 stitches increased). Work ROUND-1 a total of 3-4-5-6-7-8-9 times. A total of 10-11-12-13-14-15-16 increases in height for the saddle-shoulders = 92-96-104-108-116-120-128 stitches. Now work and increase as follows: Knit and increase AFTER markers 1 and 3 and BEFORE markers 2 and 4 (= 4 stitches increased). The number of stitches on the saddle-shoulders increases but remains the same on the front and back pieces. Increase like this every 5th-5th-4th-4th-3rd-2nd-2nd round a total of 5-5-7-8-9-12-13 times = 112-116-132-140-152-168-180 stitches. The increases are finished. Work stockinette stitch in the round until the piece measures 32-34-35-37-38-40-41 cm = 12½"-13⅜"-13¾"-14½"-15"-15¾"-16⅛" from the highest point by the neck. Now divide for the split in each side: Insert 1 marker-thread in the middle of the saddle-shoulder stitches, with 11-11-14-15-17-18-22 saddle-shoulder stitches on each side of each marker-thread). Knit until there are 2 stitches left before the first marker-thread, place 2 stitches on the cable needle held behind the piece, knit 1, make 1 yarn over, knit 1, then work the stitches on the cable needle as follows: knit 1, make 1 yarn over, knit 1. Knit until there are 2 stitches left before the second marker-thread, place 2 stitches on the cable needle held in front of the piece, knit 1, make 1 yarn over, knit 1, then work the stitches on the cable needle as follows: knit 1, make 1 yarn over, knit 1. Knit to the first marker-thread and place half the stitches on 1 thread (dividing the piece in the middle of each cable = by each marker-thread). Each piece is finished separately. BACK PIECE: = 58-60-68-72-78-86-92 stitches. Work stockinette stitch back and forth with 3 stitches I-CORD on each side – read explanation above. Work until the piece measures 53-55-56-58-59-61-63 cm = 21"-21⅝"-22"-22¾"-23¼"-24"-24¾" from the highest point by the neck. On the next row from the right side begin the rib, AT THE SAME TIME increase 27-29-33-33-37-41-43 stitches evenly on the row = 85-89-101-105-115-127-135 stitches, working as follows: Change to circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75. Work 3 stitches I-cord, then rib (knit 1, purl 1) until there are 4 stitches left (remember to increase), knit 1 and work 3 stitches I-cord. Continue this rib back and forth for 11-11-12-12-13-13-13 cm = 4⅜"-4⅜"-4¾"-4¾"-5⅛"-5⅛"-5⅛". Bind off a little loosely with rib. The poncho measures approx. 64-66-68-70-72-74-76 cm = 25¼"-26"-26¾"-27½"-28⅜"-29⅛"-29½" from the highest point by the neck. FRONT PIECE: Work in the same way as the back piece. NECK: Start mid-back. Use circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75 and knit up 52-52-56-56-60-60-64 stitches around the neckline (stitch count must be divisible by 2). Work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1) for 15-15-16-16-17-17-18 cm = 6"-6"-6¼"-6¼"-6¾"-6¾"-7". Bind off a little loosely with rib. You can fold the neck double if you wish. |
