Thank you for your answer about the stitch holder. I had printed out the pattern, and missed out a huge part. I should read more slowly.

The heel decrease doesn’t seem to work. You mention picking up stitches from stitch holder, but there isn’t one in the instructions ?
18.09.2020 - 17:00DROPS Design answered:
Dear Judith, there is a stitch-holder mentioned, at where you start knitting the heel: " Now work heel as explained below. Keep the first 13-14-15 stitches on needle for heel, slip the next 28-30-32 stitches on 1 stitch holder without working the stitches (= mid on top of foot) and keep the last 13-14-15 stitches on needle for heel = 26-28-30 heel stitches on needle. Happy Knitting!

Bon tricot!

---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagram A.1. Work the entire pattern in stockinette stitch. DECREASE/INCREASE TIP (evenly): To calculate how to decrease/increase evenly, use the total number of stitches on row (e.g. 72 stitches) and divide stitches by number of decreased/increases to be done (e.g. 8) = 9. In this example decrease by knitting alternately every 8th and 9th stitch together. When increasing make 1 yarn over after every 9th stitch. On next round knit yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. KNITTING TIP-1: To avoid the knitting gauge to tighten when working pattern, it is important not to tighten the strands on back side of piece. Use half a larger needle size when working pattern if needed. KNITTING TIP-2 (applies to heel): To get a stronger heel the entire heel and heel decrease can be worked in 2 strands as follows: Use strand inside and outside of ball and work 1 stitch alternately with one and the other strand. This way you get a thicker heel without working with double strand. HEEL DECREASE: ROW 1 (= right side): Knit until 7-8-8 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to knit, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch knitted, turn piece. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Purl until 7-8-8 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to purl, purl 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch purled, turn piece. ROW 3 (= right side): Knit until 6-7-7 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to knit, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch knitted, turn piece. ROW 4 (= wrong side): Purl until 6-7-7 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to purl, purl 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch purled, turn piece. Continue decrease like this with 1 stitch less before each decrease until there are 14-14-16 stitches on needle. ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- SOCKS - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Worked in the round on double pointed needles, top down. SOCK: Cast on 72-72-80 stitches on double pointed needles size 2.5 mm = US 1,5 with blue. Knit 1 round. Switch to grey blue and work rib in the round = knit 2/purl 2 for 3 cm = 1⅛". Knit 1 round while at the same time decreasing 8-4-4 stitches evenly - read DECREASE/INCREASE TIP = 64-68-76 stitches. Read KNITTING TIP-1 and work A.1 in the round (= 16-17-19 repetitions of 4 stitches). REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! On round marked with arrow-1 in A.1, adjust number of stitches to 66-66-72 stitches (increase 2 stitches in 35/37, decrease 2 stitches in 38/40 and decrease 4 stitches in 41/43). Work A.1 (there is now room for 11-11-12 repetitions of 6 stitches). On round marked with arrow-2 decrease 6-6-4 stitches evenly = 60-60-68 stitches. Work A.1 (there is now room for 15-15-17 repetitions of 4 stitches). On round marked with arrow-3 decrease 6-2-6 stitches evenly = 54-58-62 stitches remain. When A.1 has been worked, working stockinette stitch in the round with ocean view until sock measures approx. 17-18-19 cm = 6¾"-7"-7½" from cast-on edge. Now work heel as explained below. Read KNITTING TIP-2 and work in stockinette stitch back and forth over heel stitches with ocean view for 5-5½-6 cm = 2"-2⅛"-2⅜". Insert a marker in the middle of last row, marker should be used later to measure the length of foot. Work HEEL DECREASE with ocean view - read explanation above. After heel decrease work next round as follows (with ocean view): Knit over the 14-14-16 heel stitches, pick up 13-14-16 stitches along side of heel, knit the 28-30-32 stitches from stitch holder on top of foot and pick up 13-14-16 stitches along the other side of heel = 68-72-80 stitches on round. Work until mid under heel, now begin round here. Insert 1 marker on each side of the 28-30-32 stitches mid on top of foot. Work in stockinette stitch in the round with ocean view and decrease on each side of the 28-30-32 stitches on top of foot as follows: Knit the last 2 stitches before first marker on top of foot together and knit the 2 stitches after last marker on top of foot twisted together (= 2 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every other round 8-8-10 times in total = 52-56-60 stitches. Then continue until piece measures approx. 18-19-21 cm = 7"-7½"-8¼" from marker on heel (approx. 4-5-6 cm = 1½"-2"-2⅜" remain until finished measurements, try the sock on and work to desired length). Insert 1 marker in each side of sock so that there are 26-28-30 stitches both on top of foot and under foot. Work in stockinette stitch in the round with ocean view and decrease for toes on each side of both markers as follows: Work until 3 stitches remain before marker, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker is in the middle of these 2 stitches), knit 2 twisted together. Repeat decrease at the other marker (= 4 stitches decreased on round). Decrease like this on each side of both markers on every other round a total of 4-7-9 times and then on every round a total of 6-3-2 times = 12-16-16 stitches remain. On next round knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 6-8-8 stitches remain. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten. Sock measures approx. 22-24-27 cm = 8¾"-9½"-10⅝" from marker on heel. Work the other sock the same way. |
