Struggling with right hand front instruction , place the outermost 14-14-15-15-16-16 stitches mid-front on a thread for the neckline, working them first to avoid having to cut the strand. Then cast off on each row from the neck as follows: 2 stitches 1 time and 1 stitch 2 times = 16-17-18-20-20-22 shoulder stitches. ? Can you explain more ?

Dear Elizabeth, when you get to the neckline, you knit the first 14-14-15-15-16-16 stitches (starting from the mid-front), put these stitches on a stitch-holder / thread, and *then knit until the end of the row, turn, knit back, turn*, and cast off 2 stitches. Repeat *-*, cast off 1 stitch, repeat *-* and cast off 1 stitch eagain. Happy Knitting!

ROW 2: Knit over purl and purl over knit. Repeat row 2 onwards. BUTTONHOLES: Work buttonholes on the right band. 1 BUTTONHOLE = knit together the 2nd and 3rd stitch from the edge and make 1 yarn over. On the next row (wrong side) knit the yarn over to leave a hole. Work buttonholes when the piece measures: XS: 12, 22, 32, 42 and 52 cm = 4¾", 8¾", 12½", 16½" and 20½". S: 12, 22, 32, 43 and 54 cm = 4¾", 8¾", 12½", 17" and 21¼". M: 12, 20, 29, 38, 47 and 56 cm = 4¾", 8", 11⅜", 15", 18½" and 22". L: 12, 21, 30, 39, 48 and 57 cm = 4¾", 8¼", 11¾", 15¼", 19" and 22½". INCREASE TIP (for sleeves): Start 1 stitch before the marker-thread, 1 yarn over, knit 2 (marker thread sits between these 2 stitches), 1 yarn over. On the next round knit the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Then work the new stitches in stockinette stitch. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JACKET - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The front and back pieces are worked separately back and forth with circular needle and bottom up, then sewn together. The sleeves are worked in the round with double pointed needles/circular needle. The neck is worked to finish. The front piece is worked in moss stitch and cables, the back piece in moss stitch. BACK PIECE: Cast on 76-84-92-92-100-108 stitches with circular needle size 6 MM = US 10 and 2 strands DROPS Air or 1 strand DROPS Wish. Purl 1 row from the wrong side. Then work rib as follows from the right side: 1 GARTER STITCH – read description above, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, knit 2 and 1 garter stitch. Work this rib back and forth for 10 cm = 4", finishing after a row from the right side. Change to circular needle size 8 MM = US 11. Purl 1 row from the wrong side and decrease 18-22-26-22-24-26 stitches evenly spaced = 58-62-66-70-76-82 stitches. Continue with MOSS STITCH - read description above, with 1 garter stitch on each side. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! When the piece measures 41-42-43-44-45-46 cm = 16⅛"-16½"-17"-17¼"-17¾"-18", bind off 4-5-5-5-7-8 stitches for the armholes at the beginning of the next 2 rows = 50-52-56-60-62-66 stitches. Continue the pattern as before until the piece measures 58-60-62-64-66-68 cm = 22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼"-26"-26¾". On the next row bind off the middle 16-16-18-18-20-20 stitches for the neckline and finish each shoulder separately. Bind off 1 stitch on the next row from the neck = 16-17-18-20-20-22 shoulder stitches. Work until the piece measures 60-62-64-66-68-70 cm = 23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼"-26"-26¾"-27½". Bind off. Work the other shoulder in the same way. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Cast on 42-46-50-50-54-58 stitches with circular needle size 6 MM = US 10. Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work as follows from the right side: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, knit 2, purl 2, work A.1, * purl 2, knit 2 *, work from *-* over the next 20-24-28-28-32-36 stitches, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Work this rib back and forth for 10 cm = 4". Change to circular needle size 8 MM = US 11. Work as follows from the wrong side: 1 garter stitch, purl the next 20-24-28-28-32-36 stitches and decrease 4-6-8-6-7-8 stitches evenly over these stitches, purl 16 and 5 band stitches in garter stitch = 38-40-42-44-47-50 stitches. Work as follows from the right side: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, 4 stitches in moss stitch, A.3, 16-18-20-22-25-28 stitches in moss stitch, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this pattern. When the piece measures 12 cm = 4¾" work the first BUTTONHOLE – read description above. When the piece measures 41-42-43-44-45-46 cm = 16⅛"-16½"-17"-17¼"-17¾"-18", bind off 4-5-5-5-7-8 stitches for the armhole on the next row from the side = 34-35-37-39-40-42 stitches. When the piece measures 53-55-57-58-60-62 cm = 21"-21⅝"-22½"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜", place the outermost 14-14-15-15-16-16 stitches mid-front on a thread for the neckline, working them first to avoid having to cut the strand. Then bind off on each row from the neck as follows: 2 stitches 1 time and 1 stitch 2 times = 16-17-18-20-20-22 shoulder stitches. The stitches in A.3 are now worked in stockinette stitch. Bind off when the piece measures 60-62-64-66-68-70 cm = 23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼"-26"-26¾"-27½". LEFT FRONT PIECE: Cast on 42-46-50-50-54-58 stitches with circular needle size 6 MM = US 10. Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work as follows from the right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, * knit 2, purl 2*, work from *-* over the next 20-24-28-28-32-36 stitches, work, A.1, purl 2, knit 2 and 5 band stitches in garter stitch. Work this rib back and forth for 10 cm = 4". Change to circular needle size 8 MM = US 11. Work as follows from the wrong side: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, purl 16, purl 20-24-28-28-32-36 and decrease 4-6-8-6-7-8 stitches evenly over these stitches, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch = 38-40-42-44-47-50 stitches. Work as follows from the right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, 16-18-20-22-25-28 stitches in moss stitch, A.2, 4 stitches in moss stitch and 5 band stitches in garter stitch. Continue this pattern. The stitches in A.2 are now worked in stockinette stitch. Bind off when the piece measures 60-62-64-66-68-70 cm = 23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼"-26"-26¾"-27½". SLEEVES: Cast on 44-44-48-48-52-52 stitches with double pointed needles size 6 MM = US 10. Knit 1 round. Then work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 10 cm = 4". Change to double pointed needles size 8 MM = US 11. Knit 1 round and decrease 14-12-14-14-16-16 stitches evenly spaced = 30-32-34-34-36-36 stitches. Insert a marker-thread at the beginning of the round = mid-under sleeve. Work stockinette stitch in the round. When the sleeve measures 11 cm = 4⅜", increase 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread – read INCREASE TIP. Increase like this every 6½-6½-6-5-5-4 cm = 2½"-2½"-2⅜"-2"-2"-1½" a total of 6-6-6-7-7-8 times = 42-44-46-48-50-52 stitches. When the sleeve measures 47-46-45-44-43-41 cm = 18½"-18"-17¾"-17¼"-17"-16⅛", work the sleeve cap back and forth (from mid-under sleeve) until the sleeve measures 51-51-50-49-49-48 cm = 20"-20"-19¾"-19¼"-19¼"-19", i.e., a split of 4-5-5-5-6-7 cm = 1½"-2"-2"-2"-2⅜"-2¾" at the top of the sleeve. Bind off. Work the other sleeve in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. Sew the side seams in the outermost loop of the outermost stitch as far as the rib (leaving a 10 cm = 4" split in each side). Sew the sleeve cap to the armhole and the split to the bottom of the armhole – see sketch. DOUBLE NECK: Start from the right side mid-front and knit up 84 to 96 stitches along the neckline (including the stitches on the threads) with circular needle size 6 MM = US 10. The stitch count should be divisible by 4. Work as follows from the wrong side: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, * purl 2, knit 2 *, work from *-* until there are 7 stitches left, purl 2 and 5 band stitches in garter stitch. Work this rib for 8 cm = 3⅛". Bind off 4 garter stitches on each side and continue the rib with 1 garter stitch each side until the neck measures 16 cm = 6¼". Bind off. Fold the neck double to the inside and sew down. To avoid the neck being tight and rolling outwards, it is important that the seam is elastic. Sew together the openings mid-front with small stitches. Sew the buttons onto the left band |
