------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge = knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.6. Choose diagrams for your size. The diagrams show all rows in the pattern from the right side. INCREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to increase evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 17 stitches) minus edge stitches (e.g. 2 stitches) and divide the remaining stitches by the number of increases to be made (e.g. 6) = 2.5. In this example, increase by making 1 yarn over after alternately each 2nd and 3rd stitch. Do not increase over the edge stitches. On the next row work the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. DECREASE TIP (for sleeves): Decrease 1 stitch on either side of the marker thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased). BUTTONHOLES: Work buttonholes on the right band (when the garment is worn). Work from the right side when there are 3 stitches left on the row as follows: Make 1 yarn over, knit 2 together and knit 1. On the next row (wrong side), knit the yarn over to leave a hole. The first buttonhole is worked when the piece measures 1 cm from the neck edge towards front band stitches. Then work the other 4-4-4-5-5-5 buttonholes with approx. 9-9½-10-8½-8½-9 cm = 3½"-3⅝"-4"-3¼"-3¼"-3½" between each one. BINDING-OFF TIP: To avoid the bind-off edge being tight you can bind off with a larger size needle. If the edge is still tight, make 1 yarn over after approx. each 4th stitch at the same time as binding off; the yarn overs are bind off as normal stitches. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JACKET – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE. The front and back pieces are worked separately, back and forth and top down. The sleeves are worked back and forth until the sleeve cap is finished, then in the round using short circular needle/double pointed needles. The pieces are sewn together and the neck is worked to finish. BACK PIECE: Left shoulder: Cast on 17-18-19-18-20-22 stitches with short circular needle size 5 MM = US 8 and 1 strand of each quality (= 2 strands). Purl 1 row where you increase 6 stitches evenly spaced – read INCREASE TIP = 23-24-25-24-26-28 stitches. Work pattern as follows: 1 edge stitch in GARTER STITCH – read description above, 4-5-6-5-7-9 stitches in stockinette stitch, A.1 (choose diagram for your size) over the next 18 stitches. Continue this pattern back and forth until row 5 in A.1 is finished. Cast on 1 stitch at the end of this row (right side) for the neck = 24-25-26-25-27-29 stitches. Lay the piece to one side and work the right shoulder. Right shoulder: Cast on 17-18-19-18-20-22 stitches with short circular needle size 5 MM = US 8 and 1 strand of each quality (= 2 strands). Purl 1 row where you increase 6 stitches evenly spaced = 23-24-25-24-26-28 stitches. Work pattern as follows: Work A.2 (choose diagram for your size) over the first 18 stitches, 4-5-6-5-7-9 stitches in stockinette stitch, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this pattern back and forth until row 4 in A.2 is finished. Cast on 1 stitch at the end of this row (wrong side) for the neck = 24-25-26-25-27-29 stitches. The new stitch and the edge stitch by the neck are now purled from the right side and knitted from the wrong side. Work 2 more rows of pattern, then cast on 23-23-23-27-27-27 stitches at the end of the last row (wrong side) and work the stitches from the left shoulder from the wrong side as follows: Knit 1, work row 6 in A.1 and then pattern as before to the end of the row = 71-73-75-77-81-85 stitches. Turn and work pattern as before over the first 24-25-26-25-27-29 stitches, purl 3-3-3-4-4-4, knit 4, purl 9-9-9-11-11-11, knit 4, purl 3-3-3-4-4-4, work pattern as before over the last 24-25-26-25-27-29 stitches. Continue this pattern with knit over knit and purl over purl for the 23-23-23-27-27-27 stitches between A.1 and A.2. When A.1 and A.2 have been completed in height continue as follows: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, 4-5-6-5-7-9 stitches in stockinette stitch, A.3 (choose diagram for your size) over the next 9-9-9-10-10-10 stitches, A.4 over the next 20 stitches, A.5 (choose diagram for your size and purl the middle stitch instead of the bobble on the first row) over the next 3-3-3-5-5-5 stitches, A.4 over the next 20 stitches, A.6 (choose diagram for your size) over the next 9-9-9-10-10-10 stitches, 4-5-6-5-7-9 stitches in stockinette stitch and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this pattern back and forth. When the piece measures 16 cm = 6¼" cast on stitches for the armholes at the end of each row as follows: 1 stitch 4-4-4-4-4-4 times, 2 stitches 1-2-3-4-5-6 times and 4-5-5-5-6-7 stitches 1 time on each side (= 10-13-15-17-20-23 stitches increased for each armhole) = 91-99-105-111-121-131 stitches. The increased stitches are worked in stockinette stitch with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue with pattern over the middle 61-61-61-65-65-65 stitches, 14-18-21-22-27-32 stitches in stockinette stitch and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch on each side until the piece measures approx. 46-48-50-52-54-56 cm = 18"-19"-19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22" – finish after a row marked with a black or white star in A.4 and on this row increase 3-3-4-3-6-5 stitches evenly over the 14-18-21-22-27-32 stitches in stockinette stitch (yarn overs worked twisted on the next row) = 97-105-113-117-133-141 stitches. Change to circular needle size 4 MM = US 6 and work rib (if you finished on a row with a white star work rib-1, if you finished on a row with a black star work rib-2). RIB-1 (If you finished on a row with a white star in A.4 – this is the rib in the picture): The first row is from the right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, (knit 2, purl 2) over the next 20-24-28-28-36-40 stitches, knit 2, purl 3-3-3-4-4-4, knit 2, purl 2, knit 4, purl 2, knit 2, purl 2, knit 4, purl 3-3-3-4-4-4, knit 3 (mid-stitch), purl 3-3-3-4-4-4, knit 4, purl 2, knit 2, purl 2, knit 4, purl 2, knit 2, purl 3-3-3-4-4-4, (knit 2, purl 2) over the next 20-24-28-28-36-40 stitches, knit 2, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 4 cm = 1½". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl – read BINDING-OFF TIP. The back piece measures approx. 50-52-54-56-58-60 cm = 19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝" from the shoulder down. Continue this rib for 4 cm = 1½". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. The front piece measures approx. 50-52-54-56-58-60 cm = 19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝" from the shoulder down. SLEEVES: Cast on 21-23-23-25-27-29 stitches with short circular needle size 5 MM = US 8 and 1 strand of each quality (= 2 strands). OVERVIEW OF THE NEXT SECTION: You now work pattern at the same time as stitches are cast on for the sleeve cap – read the whole section before continuing: PATTERN: Work back and forth as follows: Work 2-3-3-3-4-5 stitches in stockinette stitch, work the first 7 stitches in A.3, purl 3-3-3-5-5-5 (these stitches are purled from the right side and knitted from the wrong side), work the last 7 stitches in A.6, 2-3-3-3-4-5 stitches in stockinette stitch. Continue this pattern as far as row 13 in A.3 and A.6. Now work a group of bobbles over the middle 3-3-3-5-5-5 purled stitches – as shown on the last 4 rows and the first row in A.5. Repeat this every 32nd row. SLEEVE CAP: At the same time, cast on stitches for the sleeve cap at the end of each row as follows: 2 stitches 4-3-3-3-3-2 times, 1 stitch 1-5-5-6-8-12 times and 2 stitches 4-3-4-4-3-2 times on each side. On the next row from the right side cast on 8-10-10-10-12-14 stitches = 63-67-71-75-79-83 stitches. Insert a marker thread in the middle of the 8-10-10-10-12-14 cast-on stitches (= mid-under sleeve). Allow the thread to follow your work onwards; it is used when decreasing. THE PIECE IS NOW MEASURED FROM HERE. Continue in the round, with pattern over the middle 17 stitches on top of the sleeve and stockinette stitch over the other stitches. When the piece measures 4 cm = 1½" from the end of the sleeve cap, decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker thread – read DECREASE TIP. Decrease like this every 4-3½-3-2½-2-2 cm = 1½"-1¼"-1⅛"-1"-¾"-¾" a total of 9-10-12-13-14-15 times = 45-47-47-49-51-53 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 42-41-40-39-38-35 cm = 16½"-16⅛"-15¾"-15¼"-15"-13¾" from the end of the sleeve cap (shorter measurements in larger sizes due to wider shoulders). There is approx. 4 cm = 1½" left, try the jacket on and work to desired length. Knit 1 round where you increase 7-5-9-7-9-7 stitches evenly spaced = 52-52-56-56-60-60 stitches. Change to double pointed needles size 4 MM = US 6. Work rib (knit 2, purl 2) for 4 cm = 1½". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl – remember BINDING-OFF TIP. The sleeve measures 55-56-56-56-56-55 cm = 21⅝"-22"-22"-22"-22"-21⅝" from the cast-on edge. Work the other sleeve in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams inside the cast-on edge. Sew in the sleeves inside the edge stitch on the body and the cast-on edge on the sleeve cap. Sew the side seams from the armhole down, inside the edge stitch. Sew the buttons onto the left band. DOUBLE NECK: Start from the right side on the right band, with short circular needle size 4 MM = US 6 and 1 strand of each quality (= 2 strands). Knit up 7 stitches over the 5 band stitches and the next 2 stitches, then knit up 82 to 90 stitches inside 1 stitch around the neck until there are 7 stitches left and knit up 7 stitches over these last stitches = 96 to 104 stitches (number of stitches should be divisible by 4). Work rib from the wrong side as follows: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, * purl 2, knit 2 *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, purl 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 9 cm = 3½", then bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Fold the neck double to the inside and sew down. To avoid the neck being tight and rolling outwards, it is important that the seam is elastic. Sew together the openings at the end of the neck. |
