Thanks for the help. Now I have another question. Please explain the instruction for thumb, specifically “knit up stitches at the same time as you increase behind and on each side of the thumb where the 3 stitches were cast on.” It is confusing. “Knit up, make 1 yarn over…” ?? Where are these 3 stitches??

Dear Hetty, the 3 stitches that were cast on were used to continue working over the thumb and not interrupt pattern A.1. So you already worked over these 3 stitches. Now you have the stitches of A.2, that were on a thread, and you pick up the other end of these 3 stitches and pick up 1 stitch on each side of these 3 cast-on stitches, so that the thumb will be fully connected to the rest of the piece, and you will have no holes. So first work over the 11 stitches in the thread, with A.3 over A.2 as shown. Then, you knit up around the little hole for the thumb and work yarn overs in between the knitted up stitches, to get the correct number of stitches. Happy knitting!

Could you please clarify the instruction to increase at the base of the thumb? The colours do not remain as in the diagram. The instruction is to make a yarn over with the dark colour however the diagram indicates that the next stitch must be white. I’m aware that our English technique for “yarn over” is to bring the yarn to be knitted in the next stitch should be brought to the front (ie as for knitting a purl stitch) and that you may have a different technique. Please explain. Hetty

Dear Mrs Stock, in this video we show how to increase for a thumb gusset (without pattern, but with the technique of the yarn overs); for these mittens we work the yarn over in the dark colour, but feel free to work it with the light colour if you rather like the result like this. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.4. Choose diagrams for your size. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- MITTENS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles. RIGHT MITTEN: Cast on 44-48 stitches with double pointed needles size 3 MM = US 2.5 and color dark grey/medium brown DROPS Nepal. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 7-8 cm = 2¾"-3⅛". Change to double pointed needles size 3.5 MM = US 4. The rest of the mitten is worked in stockinette stitch. Work according to diagram A.1. Diagram A.2 is worked over the grey squares in A.1 = thumb. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! When diagram A.2 is finished, 8 stitches have been increased in A.2 (11 stitches in A.2). On the next round, place the stitches in A.2 on a thread and cast on 3 stitches as shown above the grey squares in A.1. When A.1 is finished, cut the strands and pull them through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. THUMB: Place the 11 stitches from the thread on double pointed needles size 3.5 MM = US 4. To give a neat finish, you now knit up stitches at the same time as you increase behind and on each side of the thumb, where the 3 stitches were cast on as follows: Start by working A.3 over the stitches on the needle, knit up 1 stitch with color dark grey/medium brown, make 1 yarn over with color light grey/light beige, knit up 1 stitch with color light grey/light beige, 1 yarn over with color light grey/light beige, knit up 1 stitch with color dark grey/medium brown, 1 yarn over with color light grey/ light beige, knit up 1 stitch with color light grey/light beige, 1 yarn over with color light grey/light beige and knit up 1 stitch with color dark grey/medium brown. The first round in A.3 has now been worked/knitted up. On the next round, knit the yarn overs twisted according to round 2 in A.3. When A.3 is finished, cut the strands and pull them through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. LEFT MITTEN: Work in the same way as the right mitten but work according to diagram A.4 instead of A.1. A.2 is worked on the opposite side, where the grey squares are in A.4. When A.4 is finished, work the thumb in the same way as on the right mitten. |
