How to knit a thumb gusset on a mitten

In this DROPS video we show how to knit a thumb gusset as on many of our popular knitted gloves.
Below is a diagram of the entire mitten and a diagram of the thumb. We have knitted after the large chart to where we should start increasing for the thumb (the black squares in the large diagram). You will then knit by the large chart and the little diagram (thumb). When you have done all increases in thumb chart, put x-number of stitches (the number that is in the pattern) on a thread. Now cast on x-number of stitches (the number that is in the pattern) behind the thumb and now knit the mitten after the large chart. When finished knitted mitten, put sts from the thread back on needle, knit up x-number of stitches (the number that is in the pattern) behind the thumb and then work after the thumb chart.

You must read the pattern and look at the chart to be able to follow. You’ll find patterns by clicking on the pictures below.

In this DROPS video we show how to work an easy thumb to a mitten. We knit a marking thread (pastel pink) for the thumb opening when we work the mitten. In this DROPS video we show you how to knit the beer mitten in DROPS Extra 0-1422. We have already knitted 13 cm (size M/L) and show how to cast on new stitches at the end of the next row from the right side. Then we cast on 2 stitches at the end of the next row from the wrong side when pieces measures 20 cm. Cast on 2 stitches at the end of each row from the wrong side a total of 5 times = 40 stitches. Work 2 rows. Then cast off 2 stitches at the beginning of each row from the right side. Cast off 2 stitches on each row from the right side a total of 5 times = 30 stitches. When the piece measures 34 cm cast off the first 17 stitches at the beginning of the next row from the wrong side = 13 stitches. Continue back and forth and read the pattern. How to knit a thumb on a mitten

In this DROPS video show how you can knit a thumb for a mitten. First we show how to first increase for the thumb gusset by making 1 yo each side of a marked stitch, on next round work yo's in back loop to avoid holes. On following round repeat inc and then work a couple of rounds in stockinette (or as indicated in the pattern). When gusset is done put all inc sts on a cable needle or waste yarn, cast on a new stitch (or number of sts indicated in pattern) behind these sts and continue in the round. When hand is done put back the thumb sts on a needle, pick up sts in the edge behind these and knit thumb in the round. At desired length K2 tog all the way round. Cut the thread and pull it through remaining sts, tighten and fasten. You must read the pattern to be able to follow. In this DROPS video we show you how to work rib in a stocking stitch piece. To allow the rib to tighten, work the rib with a smaller needle size than the rest of the piece. Use both ends of the needle when working.
