When I knit the swatch as suggested (17 sts Wide and 22 rows Height = 10x10 cm) my swatch measures 8 cm W x 9 cm H. In stocking stitch on 5mm needles. What should I do? Thank you.
19.02.2024 - 08:23DROPS Design answered:
Dear Catherine, do you work with DROPS Air or any alternative? You should then try again with larger needles as your stitches look to be too small. Read more here. Happy knitting!

I've knitted this pattern as far as the casting off for the armholes. You say the front and back pieces are finished separately, but after the 1st cast off, I'm left with knitting what will be the left front piece from the wrong side, not the right front piece. Do I have to break off the yarn and start knitting from the right front piece?
15.12.2023 - 14:35DROPS Design answered:
Dear Mrs Edwards, you can put aside without cutting the yarn and work the left front piece afterwards, join yarn to right front piece and finish each piece separately. Happy knitting!

Hello I am quite new to knitting and trying to understand the arm and neck shaping for this pattern. Can you please explain this step for armhole shaping: "Cast off 2 stitches 1-1-1-2-2-2 times and 1 stitch 4-7-8-7-10-14 times." for size medium. thanks
04.12.2023 - 16:22DROPS Design answered:
Dear Mrs Shafqaat, size M is 2nd size, so that you will follow all 2nd numbers, and you will cast off for armhole at the beginning of every row from the side (from RS on right front piece, from WS on left front piece, at the beg of both row from RS and WS for back piece): 2 stitches 1 time then 1 stitch 7 times. Happy knitting!

Thank you for your very helpful reply. However, I don't quite understand why I need 8 balls of Nepal wool for this pattern; the pattern says it needs 200g of Air wool, and as each ball of Nepal is 50 g, surely I'd need only 4 balls of Nepal to make up that weight? Air and Nepal both belong to the same group ©
07.08.2023 - 15:17DROPS Design answered:
Hi Julia, You are quite right, yarns belonging to the same group can be interchanged without adjustments, so you only need 4 balls of Nepal. Happy crafting!

I am interested in knitting this pattern using some yarn left from another pattern. I have Drops Nepal and Drops Kidsilk, could I use these together for this pattern? And if so, how much of each would I need for size M or L? Thank you!
05.08.2023 - 17:48DROPS Design answered:
Dear Julia, you can use only Nepal for this; if you want to combine them you could try and see if the gauge will match the one in the pattern. You would need 8 balls of Nepal for this pattern for both sizes. Happy knitting!

Your CHEST measurements show for a size small to be 48 cm which does not make sense. Is that an error? Thank you
27.01.2023 - 19:13DROPS Design answered:
Dear Ruth, the measurements in the schematic are for half of the chest. For size S, it's 44 cm, so the actual chest of the garment is 88cm. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge in height = Knit 2 rows. DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on needle (e.g. 174 stitches) and divide by number of decreases to be made (e.g. 10) = 17.4. In this example decrease by knitting approx. each 16th and 17th stitch together. BUTTONHOLES (on right band when garment is worn): 1 buttonhole = work 2 together and make 1 yarn over – NOTE: It is neatest if you work the buttonholes by purling 2 together in a section of 2 purled stitches (seen from the right side). On the next row knit the yarn overs to leave a hole. The bottom buttonhole is worked 6 cm = 2⅜" from the bottom edge, the top buttonhole is worked just before the beginning of the V-neck. The other 2-2-2-3-3-3 buttonholes are positioned evenly spaced between them. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- VEST – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth with circular needle, from mid front and bottom up as far as the armholes. Then the front and back pieces are finished separately. The neck/bands and armhole edges are worked to finish. BODY: Cast on 160-176-188-204-224-244 stitches with circular needle size 4 mm = US 6 and Air. Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work as follows from the right side: 1 edge stitch in GARTER STITCH – read description above, * knit 2 / purl 2 *, repeat from *-* until there are 3 stitches left on the row, knit 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 3 cm = 1⅛". Change to circular needle size 5 mm = US 8 and continue with stockinette stitch and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch on each side; decrease 10 stitches evenly spaced on the first row = 150-166-178-194-214-234 stitches – read DECREASE TIP in explanations above. Work stockinette stitch with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch in each side until the piece measures 28-29-30-31-32-33 cm = 11"-11⅜"-11¾"-12¼"-12½"-13" from the cast-on edge. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! The next row is worked as follows from the right side: Work the first 35-39-42-45-50-55 stitches, bind off the next 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches, work the next 68-76-82-88-98-108 stitches, bind off 6-6-6-8-8-8 stitches and work the last 35-39-42-45-50-55 stitches. The front and back pieces are now finished separately. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: = 35-39-42-45-50-55 stitches. Work stockinette stitch with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch towards mid front and bind off for the armhole as follows: Bind off 2 stitches 1-1-1-2-2-2 times and 1 stitch 4-7-8-7-10-14 times. AT THE SAME TIME when the piece measures 29-30-31-32-33-34 cm = 11⅜"-11¾"-12¼"-12½"-13"-13⅜", decrease 1 stitch towards the neck by knitting 2 stitches together inside the edge stitch. Decrease like this every 1½ cm = ½" a total of 13-14-14-15-15-16 times. After all the decreases there are 16-16-18-19-21-21 stitches left on the needle. Bind off when the piece measures 48-50-52-54-56-58 cm = 19"-19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾" (20-21-22-23-24-25 cm = 8"-8¼"-8¾"-9"-9½"-9¾" from where stitches were bind off for the armhole). LEFT FRONT PIECE: Work as for the right front piece but reversed. BACK PIECE: = 68-76-82-88-98-108 stitches. Work stockinette stitch and bind off for the armholes at the beginning of each row as follows: Bind off 2 stitches 1-1-1-2-2-2 times and 1 stitch 4-7-8-7-10-14 times = 56-58-62-66-70-72 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 46-48-50-52-54-56 cm = 18"-19"-19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22" (there is approx. 2 cm = ¾" left to finished length). On the next row from the right side bind off for the neck as follows: Work the first 17-17-19-20-22-22 stitches, bind off the next 22-24-24-26-26-28 stitches and work the last 17-17-19-20-22-22 stitches. The shoulders are finished separately; do not cut the strand – the left shoulder is continued from the wrong side here. LEFT BACK SHOULDER: = 17-17-19-20-22-22 stitches. Work stockinette stitch starting from the wrong side and bind off 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row from the right side = 16-16-18-19-21-21 stitches. Continue until the piece measures 48-50-52-54-56-58 cm = 19"-19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾" from the cast-on edge; adjust to match the front piece. Bind off and cut the strand. RIGHT BACK SHOULDER: = 17-17-19-20-22-22 stitches. Work stockinette stitch starting from the right side and bind off 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row from the wrong side = 16-16-18-19-21-21 stitches. Continue until the piece measures 48-50-52-54-56-58 cm = 19"-19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾" from the cast-on edge; adjust to match the front piece. Bind off and cut the strand. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. BANDS/NECK: Insert 1 marker mid back; it will be used when working the band/neck. Knit up stitches for the bands inside the 1 edge stitch on the front pieces and the first row around the neck as follows: Start at the bottom of the right front piece and knit up, using circular needle size 4 mm = US 6, approx. 112-118-122-126-130-136 stitches up the front piece as far as the marker on the neck – leave the marker here. Then knit up approx. 112-118-122-126-130-136 stitches down the left front piece; the total number of stitches should be divisible by 4 = 224-236-244-252-260-272 stitches. It is important the rib is not too loose with too many stitches or too tight with too few stitches. Work the next row as follows from the wrong side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, * purl 2, knit 2 *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, purl 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. When the rib measures 1½ cm = ½", work BUTTONHOLES on the right band – read description above. Continue working until the rib measures 3 cm = 1⅛". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. EDGE AROUND ARMHOLES: Start from the right side where the piece was divided for the armhole. Using circular needle size 4 mm = US 6 knit up approx. 84 to 124 stitches around the whole armhole (number of stitches must be divisible by 4). Work rib in the round (knit 2 / purl 2) for 2 cm = ¾". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Work an edge around the other armhole in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew buttons onto left band. |
