Hello, I would like to make this top considerably longer. Would I just add rows after the bottom band? Will that screw up the shaping?
25.01.2026 - 18:27DROPS Design answered:
Dear Wendi, you can add rows before working the armholes, but after the initial ridges. You can either add more rows before starting to shape the piece or spread out the increases working more rows in between them; you can adjust it according to your body's shape. Remember that you may also need to increase the initial number of stitches depending on the size of the hips, if the longer piece will reach them. Happy knitting!

Bon tricot!

Gauge: 16 sts x 20 rows = 10 x 10 cm on larger needles in stockinette st. Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows. Knitting tips (for armhole and neck): All decs are made from right side. For neck dec inside 4 edge sts in garter st and at armhole dec inside 3 edge sts in garter st, as follows: After the edge sts: Slip 1 st as if to knit, K 1, psso. Before the edge sts: K 2 tog. Buttonband: The buttonbands are knit in garter st so that the edge will be a little firmer. Knitting tip: Ribbon has a tendency to twist when knit. For best results, untwist the yarn as you go along. Back: Cast on 53-60-66-72-79 sts on smaller needles and knit 4 rows garter st. Change to larger needles and stockinette st. When the piece measures 5 cm inc 1 st at each side every 4 cm a total of 5 times = 63-70-76-82-89 sts. When the piece measures 23-24-25-26-27 cm knit 4 rows garter st over the 6-7-8-9-10 sts at each side (knit the remaining sts in stockinette as before). Then bind off 3-4-5-6-7 sts at each side for armhole. Dec 1 st for armhole at each side every other row 5-7-8-9-10 times - see knitting tips = 47-48-50-52-55 sts remain. Continue in stockinette st, keeping 3 sts in garter st at each side. When the piece measures 37-39-41-43-45 cm knit 4 rows garter st over the center 31-32-32-32-33 sts (knit the remaining sts in stockinette as before). On the next row bind off the center 23-24-24-24-25 sts for the neck. Then dec 1 st at each neck edge - see knitting tips = 11-11-12-13-14 sts remain on each shoulder. Keep 3 sts at armhole edge in garter st and 4 sts at neck edge in garter st and remaining sts in stockinette. Bind off when the piece measures 40-42-44-46-48 cm. Left front: Cast on 30-34-37-40-43 sts on smaller needles and knit 4 rows garter st, change to larger needles and stockinette st, keeping 4 sts at center front edge in garter st for buttonband - see instructions above. When the piece measures 5 cm inc at the side as on back = 35-39-42-45-48 sts. Read the entire next section before knitting: Neckband: When the piece measures 22-24-25-27-28 cm dec 1 st for the neck every other row 16-17-17-17-17 times - see knitting tips. Armhole: At the same time when the piece measures 23-24-25-26-27 cm knit garter st at the side and bind off for armhole as on back. After all armhole and neck shaping is complete 11-11-12-13-14 sts remain on shoulder. Keep 3 sts in garter st at armhole and 4 sts in garter st at neck edge and bind off when the piece measures 40-42-44-46-48 cm. Right front: Cast on and knit the same as the left, reversing shaping. Do not make buttonholes. The buttons are pulled through the buttonbands. Assembly: Sew shoulder and side seams using edge sts as seam allowance. Sew on buttons on left button band. Crocheted flowers: Crochet as follows: ch 4, join into a ring with 1 sl st, * ch 9, 1 sc in ring * , repeat from * - * until there are 5 petals, finish with 1 sl st in 1st ch at start of row, cut yarn. Crochet 6 flowers and sew 3 to each side of front. |
