GARTER ST (back and forth on needle): K all rows. SEED ST: Row 1: * K1, P1 *, repeat from *-*. Row 2: K over P and P over K. Repeat row 2. TURNS: * Work all sts from bottom edge to neck, turn piece and work return row. On next row work row to first marker, turn piece and work return row – see KNITTING TIP. Work row to second marker, turn piece and work return row. Work row to third marker, turn piece and work return row. Work all sts from bottom edge to neck, turn piece and work return row *. Repeat from *-*. I.e. 1 repeat of Turns = 10 rows on sts towards bottom edge and 4 rows on sts towards neck. KNITTING TIP: When turning mid piece, slip the first st as if to K, tighten thread and work return row - to avoid hole in transition. --------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------- PONCHO: Worked from side to side, back and forth on circular needle and sewn tog mid back afterwards. LOOSELY cast on 48-51-54 sts on circular needle size 5.5 mm / US 9 with Alaska. Insert 3 markers (from bottom edge towards neck) in piece as follows from RS: First marker = after 15-16-17 sts. Second marker = after 31-33-35 sts. Third marker = after 40-43-46 sts. Leave the markers in piece so that the turns will all be in straight lines. Continue as follows from RS: 6 garter sts, K2, P7-8-9, K2, 14-15-16 seed sts, K2, P7-8-9, K2 and finish with 6 garter sts towards neck. WS: 6 garter sts, P2, K7-8-9, P2, 14-15-16 seed sts, P2, K7-8-9, P2 and finish with 6 garter sts towards bottom edge. Continue in pattern like this, AT THE SAME TIME work TURNS - see ABOVE. Continue with turns until piece measures 132-144-156 cm / 52"-56½"-61¼" from cast on row – measured at the bottom of piece where it is widest. Piece will measure approx 53-58-62 cm / 21"-22 ¾"-24⅜" at the top towards neck. Bind off LOOSELY. ASSEMBLY: Sew cast on row to bind off row, edge to edge to avoid a chunky seam. The seam will sit mid back. NECK: Place piece flat with front piece facing up and seam facing down. Insert a marker approx 6-7-8 cm / 2⅜"-2¾"-3⅛" from left shoulder towards mid front. Beg by marker and pick up approx 108-112-116 sts (divisible by 4) along neck on circular needle size 5 mm / US 8 with Alaska (pick up inside 1 garter st). Now pick up 6 sts behind the first 6 sts that were picked up at beg of row = approx 114-118-122 sts. K 1 row from WS, and continue back and forth on needle as follows: 6 garter sts, * K2/P2 *, repeat from *-* and finish with K2 and 6 garter sts. AT THE SAME TIME when neck measures 3, 7 and 11 cm / 1⅛", 2¾" and 4⅜" make buttonholes on right front band as follows: bind off 3rd garter st from edge and cast on 1 new st on return row. Continue until neck measures 14 cm / 5½" and bind off loosely with K over K and P over P. Sew on buttons. |
