------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.3. Find your size in the diagrams. The diagrams show the pattern from the right side. INCREASE TIP-1: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from RIGHT SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from RIGHT SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE TIP-2: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from WRONG SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from WRONG SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. KNITTING TIP: When working short rows, there will be a small hole after each turn. This hole can be closed by tightening the strand or using the technique German Short Rows as follows: Slip the first stitch purl-wise, take the strand over the right needle and tighten well from the back (2 loops on the needle). These loops are worked together on the next row. DECREASE TIP: Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker-thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker-thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- SWEATER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. 5-5-5-5-5-7-7 cables are worked on the front piece and stockinette stitch on the back piece. The piece is started back and forth, casting on stitches at the back of the neck and working top down while increasing stitches on each side for the shoulders, which become slightly diagonal. The back piece is worked as far as the armholes. The front piece is first worked in 2 sections, knitting up stitches along 1 back shoulder, working pattern and increasing for the neckline. This is repeated on the other shoulder. The 2 front sections are joined when the neckline is finished and worked as far as the armholes. The front and back pieces are joined on the same circular needle and the body is worked in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the armholes for the sleeves, which are started back and forth for the sleeve cap, then finished in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the neckline and the neck is worked in the round to finish. If there is a «0» in your chosen size, skip the information and go straight to the next instruction. BACK PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth. Cast on 24-26-26-28-28-30-30 stitches with circular needle size 6 MM = US 10 and DROPS Melody. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl. ROW 2 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 3 (wrong side): Read INCREASE TIP-2. Purl 3, increase 1 stitch towards the right, purl until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the left, purl 3. Work ROWS 2 and 3 a total of 12-12-13-14-15-17-19 times (24-24-26-28-30-34-38 rows worked). After the last increase there are 72-74-78-84-88-98-106 stitches. Insert 1 marker outermost on one side. The piece is now measured from here! Continue with stockinette stitch until the piece measures 10-10-9-10-8-11-11 cm = 4"-4"-3½"-4"-3⅛"-4⅜"-4⅜" from the marker along the armhole. Remember to maintain the knitting gauge. Now increase for the armholes (NOTE: Do not increase for the armholes in size XS). INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 2 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 2. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 0-1-2-2-3-1-1 times (0-2-4-4-6-2-2 rows worked) = 72-76-82-88-94-100-108 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 10-11-11-12-12-12-12 cm = 4"-4⅜"-4⅜"-4¾"-4¾"-4¾"-4¾" from the marker along the armhole, finishing with a row from the wrong side. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Work the left front piece along the left back shoulder. LEFT FRONT PIECE: Find the left back shoulder as follows: Lay the back piece flat, right side up, with the stitch holder towards you; left side of piece = left shoulder. Start from the right side by the neck on the left back shoulder. Knit up 1 stitch in each row worked inside the outermost stitch, as far as the armhole = 24-24-26-28-30-34-38 shoulder-stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Work 1 row from the wrong side as follows: Purl and increase 5-5-5-5-5-10-10 stitches evenly spaced (with yarn overs) = 29-29-31-33-35-44-48 stitches. On the next row work the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes while working as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 6-5-5-4-4-3-3, work A.1 (= 21-21-21-21-21-39-39 stitches), knit 2-3-5-8-10-2-6. ROW 2 (wrong side): Knit above knit and purl above purl. Work ROWS 1 and 2 until the piece measures 3-4-5-6-7-8-9 cm = 1⅛"-1½"-2"-2⅜"-2¾"-3⅛"-3½" from the knitted-up row, with the last row from the wrong side. Note down this row in A.1, so the neckline-increases begin on the same row on the right front piece. Increase for the neckline: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 6-5-5-4-4-3-3, work A.1 (= 21-21-21-21-21-39-39 stitches), knit 2-3-5-8-10-2-6. ROW 2 (wrong side): Knit above knit and purl above purl, cast on 1 stitch at end of row. ROW 3 (right side): Knit 7-6-6-5-5-4-4, work A.1, knit 2-3-5-8-10-2-6. ROW 4 (wrong side): Knit above knit and purl above purl, cast on 2 stitches at end of row. ROW 5 (right side): Knit 9-8-8-7-7-6-6, work A.1, knit 2-3-5-8-10-2-6. ROW 6 (wrong side): Knit above knit and purl above purl, cast on 3 stitches at end of row. ROW 7 (right side): Knit 12-11-11-10-10-9-9, work A.1, knit 2-3-5-8-10-2-6. ROW 8 (wrong side): Knit above knit and purl above purl, cast on 3 stitches at end of row = 38-38-40-42-44-53-57 stitches. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Work the right front piece along the right back shoulder. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Start from the right side by the armhole on the right back shoulder. Knit up 1 stitch in each row worked inside the outermost stitch, as far as the neckline = 24-24-26-28-30-34-38 shoulder-stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Work 1 row from the wrong side as follows: Purl and increase 5-5-5-5-5-10-10 stitches evenly spaced (making yarn overs) = 29-29-31-33-35-44-48 stitches. On the next row work the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes while working as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 2-3-5-8-10-2-6, work A.2 (= 21-21-21-21-21-39-39 stitches), knit 6-5-5-4-4-3-3. Make sure you finish on the same row as on the left front piece.. Increase for the neckline: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 2-3-5-8-10-2-6, work A.2 (= 21-21-21-21-21-39-39 stitches), knit 6-5-5-4-4-3-3, cast on 1 stitch at the end of the row. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl 1, knit above knit and purl above purl. ROW 3 (right side): Knit 2-3-5-8-10-2-6, work A.2, knit 7-6-6-5-5-4-4, cast on 2 stitches at the end of the row. ROW 4 (wrong side): Purl 2, knit above knit and purl above purl. ROW 5 (right side): Knit 2-3-5-8-10-2-6, work A.2, knit 9-8-8-7-7-6-6, cast on 3 stitches at the end of the row. ROW 6 (wrong side): Purl 3, knit above knit and purl above purl. ROW 7 (right side): Knit 2-3-5-8-10-2-6, work A.2, knit 12-11-11-10-10-9-9, cast on 3 stitches at the end of the row. ROW 8 (wrong side): Purl 3, knit above knit and purl above purl = 38-38-40-42-44-53-57 stitches (next row from the right side). The 2 front pieces are now joined. FRONT PIECE: Work the first row as follows from the right side: Work the 38-38-40-42-44-53-57 stitches from the right front piece as before, cast on 21-23-23-25-25-27-27 stitches for the neckline, work the 38-38-40-42-44-53-57 stitches from the left front piece as before = 97-99-103-109-113-133-141 stitches. Work back from the wrong side as before, purling the new stitches. Continue as follows: Work 2-3-5-8-10-2-6 stockinette stitches, then A.2 (= 21-21-21-21-21-39-39 stitches), work A.3 (= 51 stitches), work A.1 (= 21-21-21-21-21-39-39 stitches) and 2-3-5-8-10-2-6 stockinette stitches. Begin the pattern in A.3 on the same row as A.1/A.2 (i.e., check where you are in A.1/A.2 and begin A.3 on the same row, so the cables are worked simultaneously on every 2nd cable; first row in A.1 = first row in A.3). From the wrong side, always knit above knit and purl above purl. Continue stockinette stitch and pattern back and forth until the piece measures 28-28-29-30-30-35-37 cm = 11"-11"-11⅜"-11¾"-11¾"-13¾"-14½". Now increase for the armholes (NOTE: Do not increase for the armholes in size XS). INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, work as before until there are 2 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 2. ROW 2 (wrong side): Knit above knit and purl above purl. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 0-1-2-2-3-1-1 times (0-2-4-4-6-2-2 rows worked) = 97-101-107-113-119-135-143 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 28-29-31-32-34-36-38 cm = 11"-11⅜"-12¼"-12½"-13⅜"-14¼"-15", finishing with a row from the wrong side. The front and back pieces are now joined for the body. The front piece is longer than the back piece; approx. 2 cm = ¾" of the front neckline-depth will lie on the back piece. BODY: Work the 97-101-107-113-119-135-143 stitches from the front piece as before, cast on 2 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work the 72-76-82-88-94-100-108 stitches from the back piece as before, cast on 2 stitches (mid-under the sleeve) = 173-181-193-205-217-239-255 stitches. Insert 1 marker here (beginning of round). Continue stockinette stitch and pattern in the round until the piece measures 47-49-51-52-54-56-58 cm = 18½"-19¼"-20"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾" from the cast-on edge mid-back. Change to circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7. Work rib as follows, giving a neat transition from the cables: Knit 2-4-7-10-13-3-7 (= before the pattern starts), start the round here and continue the pattern as follows: * Purl 2 together, purl 1, knit 2 together, knit 1, work rib (knit 2, purl 2) across the next 12 stitches *, work from *-* a total of 5-5-5-5-5-7-7 times, purl 2 together, purl 1 (= 11-11-11-11-11-15-15 decreased stitches), work rib (knit 2, purl 2) AT THE SAME TIME increase 18-22-22-26-30-24-28 stitches evenly across the rest of the round = 180-192-204-220-236-248-268 stitches. When the rib measures 5-5-5-6-6-6-6 cm = 2"-2"-2"-2⅜"-2⅜"-2⅜"-2⅜", bind off with rib. The sweater measures approx. 52-54-56-58-60-62-64 cm = 20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼" from mid-back and 54-56-58-60-62-64-66 cm = 21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼"-26" from the shoulder. SLEEVES: The sleeve is worked top down. Lay the piece flat and insert 1 marker at the top of the armhole. NOTE! Mid-top of sleeve is not the knitted-up row on the front piece but 9 to 13 cm = 3½" to 5⅛" down the front piece. Use circular needle size 6 MM = US 10 or a smaller needle size if necessary. Start in the middle of the cast-on stitches under the sleeve and knit up 52-56-58-60-64-66-68 stitches, with equal numbers of stitches on each side of the marker. SLEEVE CAP Work short rows in stockinette stitch, back and forth for the sleeve cap (to give the sleeve a better fit), starting from mid-under the sleeve: ROW 1 (right side): Knit to 6 stitches past the marker on top of the sleeve, turn – read KNITTING TIP. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl to 6 stitches past the marker, turn. ROW 3 (right side): Knit to 6-6-6-7-7-8-8 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 4 (wrong side): Purl to 6-6-6-7-7-8-8 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 5 (right side): Knit to 6-6-6-7-7-8-8 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 6 (wrong side): Purl to 6-6-6-7-7-8-8 stitches past the previous turn, turn. You have turned 6 times (3 times on each side, with the last row from the wrong side). AFTER THE LAST TURN: After row 6, turn and knit back to the beginning of the round (mid-under the sleeve). Insert 1 marker-thread here; it is used when decreasing under the sleeve. Allow it to follow your work onwards. SLEEVE CONTINUED: Work stockinette stitch in the round. AT THE SAME TIME, after the first round, decrease 2 stitches mid-under the sleeve - read DECREASE TIP. Decrease like this every 2nd round 3 times, then every 10-8-8-8-5-5-5 cm = 4"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3⅛"-2"-2"-2", 2-3-3-3-4-4-4 times = 42-44-46-48-50-52-54 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 42-42-42-40-39-37-35 cm = 16½"-16½"-16½"-15¾"-15¼"-14½"-13¾" from the shoulder. Change to double pointed needles size 4.5 MM = US 7 and work rib (knit 2, purl 2), AT THE SAME TIME increase 10-8-10-8-10-12-10 stitches evenly on the first round = 52-52-56-56-60-64-64 stitches. When the rib measures 5-5-5-6-6-6-6 cm = 2"-2"-2"-2⅜"-2⅜"-2⅜"-2⅜", bind off with rib. The sleeve measures approx. 47-47-47-46-45-43-41 cm = 18½"-18½"-18½"-18"-17¾"-17"-16⅛" from the shoulder. NECK: Use circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7. Start from the right side on one shoulder-line and knit up 64-68-72-76-80-84-88 stitches around the neckline, inside 1 stitch. Knit 1 round and adjust the stitch count if necessary; it should be divisible by 4. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 4-4-4½-4½-5-5-5. Change to circular needle size 6 MM = US 10 and bind off with knit. |
