------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH: Knit all rows, from both the right and wrong side. 1 ridge in height = knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagram A.1. The diagram shows the pattern from the right side. When working lace pattern back and forth on the front pieces and back piece, adjust the pattern so there are no holes across the outermost 2 stitches on each side. Stripes are worked across all stitches. The diagram is worked from right to left when working from the right side and left to right when working from the wrong side. INCREASE TIP-1 (for neckline and armholes): INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from RIGHT SIDE (new stitch twists to left): Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from RIGHT SIDE (new stitch twists to right): Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. KNITTING TIP: When working short rows, there will be a small hole after each turn. This hole can be closed by tightening the strand or using the technique German Short Rows as follows: Slip the first stitch purl-wise, take the strand over the right needle and tighten well from the back (2 loops on the needle). These loops are worked together on the next row. DECREASE TIP: Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker-thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker-thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- SWEATER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The back piece is started back and forth, casting on stitches at the back of the neck and working top down while increasing stitches on each side for the shoulders, which become slightly diagonal. The back piece is worked as far as the armholes. The front piece is first worked in 2 sections, knitting up stitches along 1 back shoulder, working pattern and increasing for the neckline. This is repeated on the other shoulder. The 2 front sections are joined when the neckline is finished and worked as far as the armholes. The front and back pieces are joined on the same circular needle and the body is worked in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the armholes for the sleeves, which are started back and forth for the sleeve cap, then finished in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the neckline and the neck is worked in the round to finish. BACK PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth. Cast on 24-24-24-28-28-32-32 stitches with circular needle size 5.5 MM = US 9 and color Marzipan DROPS Melody. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl. Continue according to diagram A.1 while increasing for the shoulders as follows – read PATTERN in the explanations above. ROW 2 (right side): Knit 2 in the first stitch, work A.1 until there is 1 stitch left, knit 2 in the last stitch. ROW 3 (wrong side): Knit 2 in the first stitch, purl until there is 1 stitch left, knit 2 in the last stitch. AFTER ROW 3: Work ROWS 2 and 3 a total of 11-12-12-12-13-13-14 times (22-24-24-24-26-26-28 rows worked). After the last increase there are 68-72-72-76-80-84-88 stitches. Insert 1 marker outermost on one side. The piece is now measured from here! Continue A.1 Remember to maintain the knitting gauge. Work until the piece measures 11-11-10-10-11-12-11 cm = 4⅜"-4⅜"-4"-4"-4⅜"-4¾"-4⅜" from the marker on the armhole, with the last row from the wrong side. Note down which row you finish on so the armholes on the front piece begin on the same row and the pattern matches when the pieces are joined. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Continue the pattern. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 1-1-3-4-4-4-6 times = 70-74-78-84-88-92-100 stitches. The piece measures approx. 12-12-13-14-15-16-17 cm = 4¾"-4¾"-5⅛"-5½"-6"-6¼"-6¾", from the marker on the armhole, finishing with a row from the wrong side. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Work the left front piece along the left back shoulder. LEFT FRONT PIECE: Find the left back shoulder as follows: Lay the back piece flat, right side up, with the stitch holder towards you; left side of piece = left shoulder. Start from the right side by the neck on the left back shoulder. Use circular needle size 5.5 MM = US 9 and color Marzipan. Knit up 1 stitch in each row worked, inside the increased stitches so they are invisible and the transition from back to front is in stockinette stitch = 22-24-24-24-26-26-28 shoulder-stitches. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Work 1 row from the wrong side as follows, using color Marzipan: ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl 2, knit until there are 2 stitches left, purl 2 = 1 visible ridge from the right side with the 2 outermost stitch on each side in stockinette stitch. Continue with stockinette stitch and A.1 (first row is worked with color Dark Jeans Blue from right side). When the piece measures 6-7-8-8-9-10-11 cm = 2⅜"-2¾"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3½"-4"-4⅜", increase for the neckline as follows, noting down which row you begin to increase so it is matched on the right front piece: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, continue the pattern to the end of the row. Do not work holes across the 3 outermost stitches by the neck. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl and continue the pattern. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 4-4-4-5-5-5-5 times (8-8-8-10-10-10-10 rows worked) = 26-28-28-29-31-31-33 stitches (next row from the right side). Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Work the right front piece along the right back shoulder. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Start from the right side by the armhole on the right back shoulder. When the piece measures 6-7-8-8-9-10-11 cm = 2⅜"-2¾"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3½"-4"-4⅜", increase for the neckline as follows on the same row as on the left front piece: ROW 1 (right side):. Work pattern until there are 3 stitches left, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3 - remember INCREASE TIP-1. The front shoulders are now joined. FRONT PIECE: From the right side, continue the pattern across the 26-28-28-28-31-31-33 stitches on the right front piece, cast on 16-16-16-18-18-22-22 stitches for the neckline, continue the pattern across the 26-28-28-28-31-31-33 stitches on the left front piece = 68-72-72-76-80-84-88 stitches. As you work onwards, do not start working lace pattern across the cast-on stitches mid-front until you have worked at least 2 rows. Continue the pattern back and forth until the piece measures 23-25-24-24-25-26-25 cm = 9"-9¾"-9½"-9½"-9¾"-10¼"-9¾", with the last row from the wrong side the same as on the back piece. Now increase for the armholes. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 1-1-3-4-4-4-6 times (2-2-6-8-8-8-12 rows worked) = 70-74-78-84-88-92-100 stitches. The piece measures approx. 24-26-27-28-29-30-31 cm = 9½"-10¼"-10⅝"-11"-11⅜"-11¾"-12¼", finishing with a row from the wrong side. The front and back pieces are now joined for the body. BODY: The pattern may not fit under the sleeves. Continue the pattern from the yoke, as far as it will go under each sleeve. From the right side, work the 70-74-78-84-88-92-100 stitches from the front piece, cast on 2-2-4-4-8-12-12 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work the 70-74-78-84-88-92-100 stitches from the back piece, cast on 2-2-4-4-8-12-12 stitches (mid-under the sleeve) = 144-152-164-176-192-208-224 stitches. Insert 1 marker-thread in the middle of the cast-on stitches under one sleeve. Work to the marker and begin the next round from here. Continue the pattern until the piece measures 44-47-48-50-51-53-55 cm = 17¼"-18½"-19"-19¾"-20"-21"-21⅝" – adjusting so you work a few cms = about an inch with color Marzipan at the bottom. Change to circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7. Work rib (knit 2, purl 2), AT THE SAME TIME increase 20-20-20-24-28-28-32 stitches evenly on the first round = 164-172-184-200-220-236-256 stitches. When the rib measures 6-6-7-7-8-8-8 cm = 2⅜"-2⅜"-2¾"-2¾"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3⅛", knit 3 rounds and bind off slightly loosely with knit (= rolled edge). The sweater measures approx. 50-53-55-57-59-61-63 cm = 19¾"-21"-21⅝"-22½"-23¼"-24"-24¾" from mid-back and 44-46-48-52-54-56 cm = 17¼"-18"-19"-20½"-21¼"-22" from the shoulder. SLEEVES: The sleeve is worked top down. Lay the piece flat and insert 1 marker at the top of the armhole. NOTE! Mid-top of sleeve is not the knitted-up row on the front piece but 4 to 5 cm = 1½" to 2" down the front piece. Use circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7 and color Marzipan.. Start in the middle of the cast-on stitches under the sleeve and knit up 52-56-60-64-70-78-80 stitches, with equal numbers of stitches on each side of the marker. Change to circular needle size 5.5 MM = US 9. Work short rows in stockinette stitch, back and forth for the sleeve cap (to give the sleeve a better fit), starting from mid-under the sleeve using color Marzipan: ROW 1 (right side): Knit to 6-6-8-8-8-8-10 stitches past the marker on top of the sleeve, turn – read KNITTING TIP. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl to 6-6-8-8-8-8-10 stitches past the marker, turn. ROW 3 (right side): Knit to 3-3-4-4-4-4-4 stitches past the previous turn, turn. ROW 4 (wrong side): Purl to 3-3-4-4-4-4-4 stitches past the previous turn, turn. Repeat ROWS 3 and 4 until you have turned a total of 10-12-12-12-14-14-14 times (5-6-6-6-7-7-7 times each side, with the last row from the wrong side). AFTER THE LAST TURN: After the last row 4, turn and knit back to the beginning of the round (mid-under the sleeve). Insert 1 marker-thread here; it is used when decreasing under the sleeve. Allow it to follow your work onwards. Work stockinette stitch and A.1 in the round (the pattern may not fit under the sleeve). AT THE SAME TIME after the first round, decrease 2 stitches mid-under the sleeve - read DECREASE TIP. Decrease like this every 2nd round 2-2-2-3-3-3-3 times, then every 9-9-9-8-6-4-4 cm = 3½"-3½"-3½"-3⅛"-2⅜"-1½"-1½", 3-4-4-4-5-7-7 times = 42-44-48-50-54-58-60 stitches. Continue the pattern until the sleeve measures 44-45-45-45-43-43-43 cm = 17¼"-17¾"-17¾"-17¾"-17"-17"-17" from the shoulder - adjusting so you work a few cms = about an inch with color Marzipan at the bottom. Change to double pointed needles size 4.5 MM = US 7 and work rib (knit 2, purl 2), AT THE SAME TIME increase 6-8-8-6-6-6-8 stitches evenly on the first round = 48-52-56-56-60-64-68 stitches. When the rib measures 6-6-7-7-8-8-8 cm = 2⅜"-2⅜"-2¾"-2¾"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3⅛", knit 3 rounds, then bind off slightly loosely with knit (= rolled edge). The sleeve measures approx. 50-51-52-52-51-51-51 cm = 19¾"-20"-20½"-20½"-20"-20"-20" from the shoulder. NECK: Use circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7 and color Marzipan. Start from the right side on one shoulder-line and knit up 68-72-72-80-84-92-96 stitches inside 1 stitch. Knit 1 round and adjust the stitch count if necessary; it should be divisible by 4. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 2-2-2-3-3-3-3 cm = ¾"-¾"-¾"-1⅛"-1⅛"-1⅛"-1⅛". Knit 3 rounds, then bind off slightly loosely with knit (= rolled edge). |
