Hello, thanks for all your wonderful patterns! I am just after separating for back and front, and not sure about the casting off. I cast off at the beginning of each row, on the right side and on the wrong side. So when it says every 2nd row it means on row 3 and 4? and the same with every 4th row. can you please tell (for example for L) on which rows, counting from the separation I bind off? thanks so much!
18.01.2026 - 10:54DROPS Design answered:
Dear Orit, you first cast off for the armhole on every other row on each side = you will cast off at the beginning of each row on each side (ex 3 sts at the beg of next 2 rows, then 2 sts at the beg on next 4 rows); then cast off 1 stitch on every 4th row , cast off 1 stitch at the beg of next 2 rows (from RS then from WS) and work 2 rows without casting off, then work these 4 rows the number of 6 times in L. Happy knitting!

Mikä on kappaleen pituus ennen jakoa etu- ja takakapoaleeseen? Tekstissä on koossa L koko pituus 24 cm ja kuvassa taas 24 cm sileää plus 4 cm resoria. Kumpi on oikein?

18.12.2025 - 12:24DROPS Design answered:

Bon tricot!

------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- VEST - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The piece is worked in the round, bottom up, as far as the armholes. Then it is divided for the front and back pieces, then each piece is finished separately. The shoulder seams are sewn and stitches knitted up around the armholes and the sleeve-edges worked in the round. Stitches are finally knitted up around the neckline and the neck is worked in the round. BODY: Cast on 208-224-244-256-280-304-332 stitches with circular needle size 3 MM = US 2.5 and DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 cm = 1½"-1½"-1½"-1½"-2"-2"-2". Change to circular needle size 4 MM = US 6. Work stockinette stitch, AT THE SAME TIME decrease 20-20-24-24-28-28-32 stitches evenly on the first round = 188-204-220-232-252-276-300 stitches. Insert 1 marker-thread at the beginning of the round. Continue with stockinette stitch. Remember to maintain the knitting gauge. Work until the piece measures 24-26-27-28-29-30-31 cm = 9½"-10¼"-10⅝"-11"-11⅜"-11¾"-12¼". Now bind off for the armholes and divide for the front and back pieces. DIVIDE FOR FRONT AND BACK PIECES: Start 5-6-6-7-8-9-10 stitches before the marker-thread at the beginning of the round, bind off 10-12-12-14-16-18-20 stitches for the armhole, knit 84-90-98-102-110-120-130, bind off the next 10-12-12-14-16-18-20 stitches, knit 84-90-98-102-110-120-130. Finish the front and back pieces separately. BACK PIECE: = 84-90-98-102-110-120-130 stitches. Continue stockinette stitch back and forth, AT THE SAME TIME bind off for the armholes every 2nd row as follows: Bind off 3 stitches 1 time on each side, then bind off 2 stitches 1-1-2-2-3-4-5 times on each side. Now bind off 1 stitch every 4th row 5-6-6-6-7-8-9 times on each side = 64-68-72-76-78-82-86 stitches. When the piece measures 48-51-53-55-57-59-61 cm = 19"-20"-21"-21⅝"-22½"-23¼"-24", bind off for the neck and work the diagonal shoulders. Read the next section before continuing. NECKLINE AND DIAGONAL SHOULDERS: Stitches are now placed on a thread on each side for the diagonal shoulders. To avoid cutting the strand, work these stitches before placing them on the threads: Place 4-4-4-5-5-5-6 stitches on the thread each side 3 times, then place the last 5-5-7-5-6-7-6 stitches on each side on the threads. When all the stitches are on the threads, place them back on circular needle size 4 MM = US 6. Work 1 row of stockinette stitch (to avoid holes in the transitions between sets of stitches, pick up the strand between 2 stitches and work it twisted together with the first stitch on the left needle). Bind off on the next row. AT THE SAME TIME, when the piece measures 49-52-54-56-58-60-62 cm = 19¼"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜", bind off the middle 28-32-32-34-34-36-36 stitches for the neckline and finish each shoulder separately. Bind off 1 stitch on the next row from the neckline = 17-17-19-20-21-22-24 stitches. When all stitches are bind off, the piece measures approx. 51-54-56-58-60-62-64 cm = 20"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼" from the highest point on the shoulder. Repeat on the other shoulder. FRONT PIECE: = 84-90-98-102-110-120-130 stitches. When the piece measures 42-44-45-46-47-48-49 cm = 16½"-17¼"-17¾"-18"-18½"-19"-19¼", place the middle 12-14-14-16-16-18-18 stitches on a thread for the neckline and finish each shoulder separately. NECKLINE AND DIAGONAL SHOULDERS: = 26-27-29-30-31-32-34 stitches. Bind off for the neckline every 2nd row as follows: Bind off 3 stitches 1 time, 2 stitches 2 times and 1 stitch 2-3-3-3-3-3-3 times = 17-17-19-20-21-22-24 stitches on the shoulder. When the piece measures 48-51-53-55-57-59-61 cm = 19"-20"-21"-21⅝"-22½"-23¼"-24", place stitches on a thread for the shoulder in the same way as on the back piece, i.e., 4-4-4-5-5-5-6 stitches 3 times, then the last 5-5-7-5-6-7-6 stitches. The piece measures approx. 51-54-56-58-60-62-64 cm = 20"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼" from the highest point on the shoulder. Repeat on the other shoulder. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. SLEEVE EDGES: Use circular needle size 3 MM = US 2.5. Start from the right side in the middle of the bind-off stitches for the armhole and knit up 132-144-152-156-168-184-196 stitches around the armhole – the stitch count must be divisible by 4. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 2 cm = ¾". Bind off a little loosely with rib. NECK: Use circular needle size 3 MM = US 2.5. Start from the right side on one shoulder seam and knit up 88-96-100-104-108-112-116 stitches around the neckline (including the stitches on the thread) – the stitch count must be divisible by 4. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 2 cm = ¾". Bind off a little loosely with rib. |
