------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows, from both the right and wrong side. 1 ridge in height = knit 2 rows. DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on needle (e.g., 180 stitches) and divide by number of decreases to be made (e.g., 44) = 4.1. In this example decrease by knitting together approx. each 3rd and 4th stitch. STRIPES BODY: 6½-6½-6½-7-7-7 cm = 2½"-2½"-2½"-2¾"-2¾"-2¾" with 2 strands color off white. 6½-6½-6½-7-7-7 cm = 2½"-2½"-2½"-2¾"-2¾"-2¾" with 1 strand color off white and 1 strand color pacific blue. 6½-6½-6½-7-7-7 cm = 2½"-2½"-2½"-2¾"-2¾"-2¾" with 2 strands color off white. 6½-6½-6½-7-7-7 cm = 2½"-2½"-2½"-2¾"-2¾"-2¾" with 1 strand color off white and 1 strand color pacific blue. 6½-6½-6½-7-7-7 cm = 2½"-2½"-2½"-2¾"-2¾"-2¾" with 2 strands color off white. 6½-6½-6½-7-7-7 cm = 2½"-2½"-2½"-2¾"-2¾"-2¾" with 1 strand color off white and 1 strand color pacific blue. Then work as follows: Pick up the first stitch from the previous round and knit it together with the first stitch on round 2. INCREASE TIP: Increase 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread as follows: Work until there are 2 stitches left before the marker-thread, make 1 yarn over, knit 4 (marker-thread sits in the middle of these 4 stitches), 1 yarn over (2 increased stitches). On the next round knit the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Then work the new stitches in stockinette stitch. BUTTONHOLES: Work the buttonholes on the right band from the right side (band = 5 stitches): ROW 1 (right side): Knit/purl 2 together, make 1 yarn over, continue the rib as before. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work the band as before, knit/purl the yarn over to leave a hole. The piece is worked back and forth with circular needle, bottom up as far as the armholes, then divided for the front and back pieces which are finished separately. The sleeves are worked bottom up, in the round as far as the sleeve cap, then finished back and forth. The sections are sewn together. Stitches are knitted up for both bands along the front pieces. Continue this rib back and forth for 4 cm = 1½". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. Sew the sleeves into the armholes – NOTE: there is a split under the sleeve which is sewn to the bottom of the armhole - see sketch. Sew on the buttons NECK: Use circular needle size 5 MM = US 8 and 1 strand of each color (2 strands). Start from the right side, outermost on the band, and knit up 78-82-82-86-90-90 stitches along the neckline inside 1 stitch (knit up 6 stitches along each band) – the stitch count must be divisible by 4 + 2. Work the first row from the wrong side as follows: 6 band stitches in garter stitch, rib (purl 2, knit 2) until there are 8 stitches left, purl 2 and 6 band stitches in garter stitch = 78-82-82-86-90-90 stitches.
