------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.3. INCREASE/DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to increase/decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on needle (e.g. 162 stitches) and divide by the number of increases/decreases to be made (e.g. 12) = 13.5. In this example, increase by making 1 yarn over after alternately each 13th and 14th stitch. On the next row knit the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. When decreasing, knit together alternately each 12th and 13th and each 13th and 14th stitch. INCREASE TIP (for mid under sleeves): Start 2 stitches left before marker thread, 1 yarn over, knit 4 (marker thread sits in middle of these 4 stitches), 1 yarn over (= 2 stitches increased). On the next round knit the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Then work the new stitches in stockinette stitch. KNITTING TIP (for sleeve length): The length of the sleeves can be adjusted as described in the text but note the sleeve-length is a little longer than usual so the sleeves will be slightly baggy at the bottom. BINDING-OFF TIP: To avoid the bind-off edge being tight you can bind off with a larger size needle; or make 1 yarn over after approx. each 6th stitch at the same time as binding off (yarn overs bind off as normal stitches). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- SWEATER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The neck and yoke are worked in the round with circular needle, top down. The yoke is divided for body and sleeves and the body continued in the round with circular needle. The sleeves are worked in the round with double pointed needles, top down. The whole garment is worked with 2 strands Melody. NECK: Cast on 42-45-48-51-51-54 stitches with short circular needle size 7 mm = US 10,75 and 2 strands Melody. Knit 1 round then work rib in the round (= knit 1 / purl 2) for 3-3-3-4-4-4 cm = 1⅛"-1⅛"-1⅛"-1½"-1½"-1½". The next round is worked as follows: * Knit 1, make 1 yarn over, purl 2, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* to end of the round = 70-75-80-85-85-90 stitches on the needle. Work 1 round with knit over knit and purl over purl (yarn overs purled twisted to avoid holes). Insert 1 marker on the round. Work the yoke as described below; it is now measured from the marker. YOKE: Change to circular needle size 12 mm = US 17 and work A.1 in the round (= 14-15-16-17-17-18 repeats of 5 stitches). Continue this pattern. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! When the piece measures 7-8-9-9-10-10 cm = 2¾"-3⅛"-3½"-3½"-4"-4" from the marker on the neck, work A.2 in the round (= 14-15-16-17-17-18 repeats of 5 stitches). When A.2 has been completed in height there are 126-135-144-153-153-162 stitches on the needle. Continue with A.3 in the round (= 14-15-16-17-17-18 repeats of 9 stitches). Continue with A.3 until the piece measures approx. 18-20-22-22-24-24 cm = 7"-8"-8¾"-8¾"-9½"-9½" from the marker on the neck. The next round is knitted AT THE SAME TIME as the number of stitches is adjusted evenly as described below – read INCREASE/DECREASE TIP: S: Decrease 4 stitches, M: Decrease 1 stitch, L: Increase 4 stitches, XL: Increase 3 stitches, XXL: Increase 7 stitches, XXXL: Increase 12 stitches = 122-134-148-156-160-174 stitches on the needle. Continue with stockinette stitch in the round. When the piece measures 20-22-24-25-27-29 cm = 8"-8¾"-9½"-9¾"-10⅝"-11⅜" from the marker on the neck divide the yoke for the body and sleeves by working the next round as follows: Work 19-21-23-25-26-28 stitches in stockinette stitch (= ½ back piece), place the next 22-24-28-28-28-30 stitches on 1 thread for the sleeve, cast on 4-4-4-4-6-6 new stitches on the needle (= in side under the sleeve), work 39-43-46-50-52-57 stitches in stockinette stitch (= front piece), place the next 22-24-28-28-28-30 stitches on 1 thread for the sleeve, cast on 4-4-4-4-6-6 new stitches on the needle (= in side under the sleeve), and work the remaining 20-22-23-25-26-29 stitches in stockinette stitch (= ½ back piece). Cut the strand. Body and sleeves are finished separately. THE PIECE IS NOW MEASURED FROM HERE! BODY: = 86-94-100-108-116-126 stitches. Start in the middle of the 4-4-4-4-6-6 stitches under the sleeve on the one side of the piece and work stockinette stitch in the round until the piece measures 28 cm = 11" from the division (there is approx. 5 cm = 2" to finished length; you can try the sweater on and continue to desired length). Knit 1 round where you decrease 2-1-1-3-2-3 stitches evenly spaced = 84-93-99-105-114-123 stitches. Change to circular needle size 7 mm = US 10,75 and work rib in the round (= knit 1 / purl 2) for 4 cm = 1½". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl – read BINDING-OFF TIP! The sweater measures approx. 56-58-60-62-64-66 cm = 22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼"-26" from the shoulder down. SLEEVE: Place the 22-24-28-28-28-30 stitches from the thread on the one side of piece on double pointed needles size 12 mm = US 17 and in addition knit up 1 stitch in each of the 4-4-4-4-6-6 stitches cast on under the sleeve = 26-28-32-32-34-36 stitches. Insert 1 marker thread in the middle of the 4-4-4-4-6-6 stitches under the sleeve and allow it to follow your work onwards; it will be used when increasing mid under sleeve. Start the round at the marker thread and work stockinette stitch in the round. When the piece measures 3 cm = 1⅛" from the division increase 2 stitches mid under sleeve – read INCREASE TIP. Increase like this every 4½-5-7-4-4½-5 cm = 1¾"-2"-2¾"-1½"-1¾"-2" a total of 8-7-5-8-7-6 times = 42-42-42-48-48-48 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 42-40-39-37-36-34 cm = 16½"-15¾"-15¼"-14½"-14¼"-13⅜" from the division (there is now 5 cm = 2" to finished length; you can try the sweater on and continue to desired length – read KNITTING TIP). NOTE: Shorter measurements in larger sizes due to wider neck and longer yoke. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 21-21-21-24-24-24 stitches. Change to double pointed needles size 7 mm = US 10,75. Work rib in the round (= knit 1 / purl 1) for 4 cm = 1½". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl – remember BINDING OFF TIP! The sleeve measures approx. 47-45-44-42-41-39 cm = 18½"-17¾"-17¼"-16½"-16⅛"-15¼" from the division. Work the other sleeve in the same way. |
