Dear Carol, you can check the following list for vests for chunky yarn: https://www.garnstudio.com/search.php?action=browse&c=women-vests&mt=1&yg=5&lang=en. Since you are using a yarn not from DROPS, you would need to calculate the amount of grams you need for the pattern according to the yardage of your yarn; see here how to convert the yarn: https://www.garnstudio.com/lesson.php?id=14&cid=19. Happy knitting!

I made this vest as S/M sized and to my disappointment it came out too big. When comparing to lengths given in pattern the size is as it should be. But when I wear it, it is much bigger than in the figure... I'm 166cm long so I wonder if the woman in figure is some kind of amazone...

The shrug is knitted in 3 pieces. 2 edge pieces which are knitted from the mid back and ends at the nape of the neck. These 2 pieces are sewn tog to a ring and then attached to the back piece – see figure 1. Knitting gauge: 17 sts x 22 rows on needles size 5 mm / US 8 with 2 strands of Alpaca in stockinette sts = 10 x 10 cm / 4'' x 4''. Lace Pattern: See diagram M.1 The diagram are showing all rows in pattern seen from the RS. Garter sts (back and forth on row): Knit all rows. Measurement tips: All length measures for the edge piece are done at the shortest side. Increasing tips: All increases are done from the RS. For size S/M and M/L inc inside the first garter st (= 1 inc st per row). For size XL and XXL inc inside the first garter st and after the first st in the stockinette sts section after diagram M.1 (= 2 inc sts per row). See measurement drawing. When knitting in garter sts inc as follows: Make a yo, on the returning row knit into back of you to avoid a hole. When knitting in stockinette sts inc as follows: K2 sts in one st. Decreasing tips: All decreases are done from the RS. For size S/M and M/L decrease inside the first garter st (= 1 dec st per row). For size XL and XXL dec inside the first garter sts and after the first st in stockinette sts section after M.1 (= 2 dec sts per row). Decrease as follows: K2 tog. Tips: You may choose to crochet an edge around the shrug on hook size 4 mm / G/6 with 2 strands of Alpaca. Crochet as follows: 1 sc, *2 ch, skip 1 cm / 3/8'', 1 sc*, repeat from *-* and finish with a sl st in the first sc. Back piece: Cast on 57-63-69-75 sts on needle size 5 mm / US 8 with 1 strand of each color. Work in garter sts until the piece measures 3-3-1-1 cm / 1 1/8"-1 1/8"-3/8"-3/8". Work next row as follows (from the RS): 4-5-6-7 sts of garter sts, *4-5-6-7 sts of stockinette sts, chart M.1 (=11 sts)*, repeat *-* a total of 3 times, 4-5-6-7 sts of stockinette sts and 4-5-6-7 sts of garter sts. Continue the pattern like this. When the piece measures 10 cm / 4'' inc 1 st in the second st in each stockinette sts section = 61-67-73-79 sts. Work a total of 4-4-5-5 repeats of M.1 and then finish the piece in garter sts. At the same time when the piece measures 22-22-24-24 cm / 8 3/4"-8 3/4"-9½"-9½" bind off the mid 23-25-27-31 sts for the neck and work each shoulder separately. Bind off 1 more st toward the neck on next row = 18-20-22-23 sts left for each shoulder. Bind off remaining sts when the piece measures 24-24-26-26 cm / 9½"-9½"-10 1/4"-10 1/4". Right edge piece: Cast on 39-41-43-46 sts on needle size 5 mm / US 8 with 1 strand of each color. Work as follows (seen from the RS): 3 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of reverse stockinette sts (purl side shown), 2 sts of garter, 2 sts of stockinette sts, 4 sts of garter sts, diagram M.1 (=11 sts), 6-8-10-13 sts of stockinette sts, 2 sts of garter sts, 4 sts of stockinette sts, 3 sts of garter sts. Continue the pattern like this. When the piece measures 10 cm / 4'' inc 1-1-2-2 sts on every 4th row a total of 3-5-5-7 times – read increasing tips = 42-46-53-60 sts (work every row as follows - seen from the RS: 6-8-8-10 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of reverse stockinette sts (purl side shown), 2 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of stockinette sts, 4 sts of garter sts, diagram M.1 (=11 sts), 6-8-15-20 sts of stockinette sts, 2 sts of garter sts, 4 sts of stockinette sts, 3 sts of garter sts). When the piece measures 17-19-21-22 cm / 6 3/4"-7½"-8 1/4"-8 3/4" work short rows as follows: *work back and forth over the first 16-18-18-20 sts (6-8-8-10 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of reverse stockinette sts (purl side shown), 2 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of stockinette sts, 4 sts of garter sts), work back and forth over the first 27-29-29-31 sts (6-8-8-10 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of reverse stockinette sts (purl side shown), 2 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of stockinette sts, 4 sts of garter sts, M.1 (=11 sts)), work back and forth over all sts*, repeat from *-* until the piece measures 29-32-36-39 cm / 11 3/8"-12½"-14 1/4"-15 1/4" – see measurement tips. Continue over all sts at the same time bind off 0-1-2-2 sts on every 4th row at the right side a total of 0-2-3-5 times = 42-44-47-50 sts. When the piece measures 45-48-51-53 cm / 17 3/4"-19"-20"-21" bind off the outermost 18-20-22-23 sts at the left side for shoulder = 24-24-25-27 sts left for the neck edge. Continue to measure from this point onwards. Now work 6-6-5-5 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of reverse stockinette sts (purl side shown), 2 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of stockinette sts, 4 sts of garter sts, 8-8-10-12 sts of stockinette sts. At the same time work *back and forth over the first 13-13-14-16 sts, back and forth over all sts*. Bind off when the piece measures 8-8-9-10 cm / 3"-3"-3½"-4" (measured at the shortest side). Left edge piece: Cast on and work as done for the right front edge piece but reverse (this means work 3 sts of garter sts, 4 sts of stockinette sts, 2 sts of garter sts, 6-8-10-13 sts of stockinette sts, diagram M.1 (=11 sts), 4 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of stockinette sts. 2 sts of garter sts, 2 sts of reverse stockinette sts (purl side shown) and 3 sts of garter sts. Assembly: See measurement drawing. Sew the edge pieces tog in the bottom edge (E to E) and the neck (D to D). Sew the edge pieces to the back piece as follows: Sew the shoulder seam (C to C) and the edge piece to the bottom and top edge of the back piece (G to G) and (F to F). |
