Hi, I’m fairly new to crochet and this is my first time to follow a pattern diagram, in the instructions for the neckwarmer I don’t understand when I work the stitches for A.4, as there is no reference to work them over how many stitches like the previous A.2 etc. Also why do you work a 2 stitch pattern over 19 stitches? Knitting is so much clearer than crochet :-)

Dear Sue, when you have worked A.4 one time in height (= 4 rows), work first row in A.4 over the remaining stitch in previous A.4 + next 3 sts = 4 stitches. And continue working diagrams as before so that stitches and pattern continue in height. Happy crocheting!

---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: Hat: See diagram A.1. Neck warmer: See diagrams A.2 to A.6. CROCHET INFO-1 (applies to hat): At beginning of every round with single crochet begin with 1 chain stitch, this does not replace first single crochet. Finish round with 1 slip stitch in first single crochet on round At beginning of every round with treble crochet begin with 4 chain stitch, these do not replace first treble crochet. Finish round with 1 slip stitch in 4th chain stitch on round. DECREASE TIP (APPLIES TO HAT): Work 1 treble crochet in each of the next 2 stitches but wait with last yarn over and pull through on each of these treble crochets, make a yarn over and pull through all loops on hook (= 1 treble crochet decreased). CROCHET INFO-2 (applies to neck warmer): On every round with single crochets replace first single crochet with 1 chain stitch, i.e. skip 1st stitch on previous round. Finish round with 1 slip stitch in 1st chain stitch at beginning of round. On every round with treble crochets replace first treble crochet with 4 chain stitches, i.e. skip 1st stitch on previous round. Finish round with 1 slip stitch in 4th chain stitch at beginning of round. ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Work in the round top down. HAT: Chain 4 on hook size 4 mm = US 6 with Puna and form a ring with 1 slip stitch in first chain stitch. Work 1 chain stitch - read CROCHET INFO-1, work 10 single crochets around ring. Work A.1 (= over 1 stitch) 10 times in total on round. REMEMBER THE CROCHET GAUGE! When A.1 has been worked 1 time vertically, there are 130 stitches on last round. Piece measures approx. 24 cm = 9½" in total (i.e. 12 cm from centre). Then work * 1 round with single crochet, 1 round with treble crochets *, work from *-*. When piece measures approx. 20 cm = 8" from centre of hat, decrease on next round with treble crochets as follows: Decrease 20 treble crochets evenly – read DECREASE TIP, i.e. work alternately every 5th and 6th treble crochets and every 6th and 7th treble crochet together = 110 stitches. Work 1 round with single crochets. On next round with treble crochets decrease 20 stitches evenly (i.e. work alternately every 4th and 5th treble crochets and every 5th and 6th treble crochet together) = 90 stitches. Then finish hat with 2 strands Puna. Work single crochets in the round for 4 cm = 1½". Fasten off. Hat measures approx. 28 cm = 11". POMPOM: Make a pompom with an approx. diameter of 5-6 cm 2"-2⅜" and fasten it at the tip of the hat. ---------------------------------------------------------- NECK WARMER - SHORT SUMMARY OF PIECE: Worked in the round from mid back, top down. NECK WARMER: Chain 108 on hook size 4.5 mm = US 7 with Puna and form a ring with 1 slip stitch in first chain stitch. Work 1 chain stitch (= replaces first single crochet) - read CROCHET INFO-2), skip first chain stitch in chain stitch ring, work 1 single crochet in each of the next 2 chain stitches, * skip 1 chain stitch, work 1 single crochet in each of the next 6 chain stitches *, work from *-* = 93 single crochets. Then work pattern from mid back as follows: Work A.2 (= 2 stitches) over the next 19 stitches, work A.3 over the next 7 stitches, A.4 (= 5 stitches), A.2 over the next 12 stitches, A.5 over 7 stitches (= mid front), A.2 over the next 12 stitches, A.6 (= 5 stitches), A.3 over the next 7 stitches and finish with A.2 over the next 19 stitches. Continue pattern like this, i.e. increase stitches mid front and decrease stitches in each side so that number of stitches stays the same. REMEMBER THE CROCHET GAUGE! When piece measures approx. 16 cm = 6¼" mid back, adjust to finish with 1 round with bobbles, fasten off. |
