------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A8. Begin at the arrow for your size (applies to A.1, A.2, A.3, A.6 and A.7). The diagrams show the pattern from the right side. INCREASE TIP-1 (from right side): INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE LEFT: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the back loop. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the front loop. INCREASE TIP-2 (from wrong side): INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE LEFT: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the back and purl through the front loop. INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT, from wrong side: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the front and purl through the back loop. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- VEST – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The piece is started back and forth, casting on stitches at the back of the neck and working the back piece top down, while increasing stitches on each side for the shoulders which become slightly diagonal. The front piece is then worked in 2 sections, knitting up stitches along 1 back shoulder, working and increasing for the neckline. This is repeated on the other shoulder. The 2 front sections are joined, casting on stitches for the front neckline. When the front piece is finished, the front and back pieces are joined and the body worked in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the armholes for the sleeve-edges, which are worked in the round. Stitches are knitted up around the neckline for the neck which is in the round to finish. BACK PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth. Cast on 27-27-27-27-29-29-29 stitches with circular needle size 5 MM = US 8 and DROPS Air. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl. ROW 2 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 3 (wrong side): Read INCREASE TIP-2. Purl 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, purl until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, purl 3. Work ROWS 2 and 3 a total of 11-11-12-13-13-14-15 times (22-22-24-26-26-28-30 rows worked) = 71-71-75-79-81-85-89 stitches. Insert 1 marker outermost on one side. The piece is now measured from here! Continue with stockinette stitch (remember to maintain the knitting gauge) until the piece measures 12-11-11-12-11-9-8 cm = 4¾"-4⅜"-4⅜"-4¾"-4⅜"-3½"-3⅛" from the marker down the armhole. Now increase for the armholes. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 3-5-5-6-8-10-12 times (6-10-10-12-16-20-24 rows worked) = 77-81-85-91-97-105-113 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 15-16-16-17-18-18-19 cm = 6"-6¼"-6¼"-6¾"-7"-7"-7½", from the marker down the armhole, finishing with a row from the wrong side. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder/thread. Work the left front shoulder along the left back shoulder as follows. LEFT FRONT SHOULDER: Find the left back shoulder as follows: Lay the back piece flat, right side up, with the stitch holder/thread towards you; left side of piece = left shoulder. Start from the right side by the neck on the left back shoulder and knit up 1 stitch in each row worked (inside the outermost stitch) as far as the armhole = 22-22-24-26-26-28-30 stitches. All length-measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Work the first row from the wrong side as follows: Purl 2-2-4-6-6-8-10, knit 1, purl 4 and increase 2 stitches evenly across these 4 stitches, knit 2 and purl 13 = 24-24-26-28-28-30-32 stitches. Continue as follows: ROW 1 (right side): A.1, A.2, A.3, A.4, knit 2-2-4-6-6-8-10. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl 2-2-4-6-6-8-10, A.4, A.3, A.2, A.1 – from the wrong side always knit above knit and purl above purl. Repeat ROWS 1 and 2 until A.1 is finished in height. The piece measures approx. 11-11-13-13-15-15-15 cm = 4⅜"-4⅜"-5⅛"-5⅛"-6"-6"-6" from the knitted-up row. There are 37-37-39-41-41-43-45 stitches and the next row is from the right side. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder/thread. Work the right front shoulder along the right back shoulder as follows. RIGHT FRONT SHOULDER: Start from the right side by the armhole on the right back shoulder and knit up 1 stitch in each row worked (inside the outermost stitch) as far as the neck = 22-22-24-26-26-28-30 stitches. All length-measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row. Work the first row from the wrong side as follows: Purl 13, knit 2, purl 4 and increase 2 stitches evenly across these 4 stitches, knit 1 and purl 2-2-4-6-6-8-10 = 24-24-26-28-28-30-32 stitches. Continue as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 2-2-4-6-6-8-10, work A.5, A.6, A.2, A.7. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work A.7, A.2, A.6, A.5, purl 2-2-4-6-6-8-10 – from the wrong side always knit above knit and purl above purl. Repeat ROWS 1 and 2 until A.7 is finished in height. The piece measures approx. 11-11-13-13-15-15-15 cm = 4⅜"-4⅜"-5⅛"-5⅛"-6"-6"-6" from the knitted-up row. There are 37-37-39-41-41-43-45 stitches and the next row is from the right side. The 2 front shoulders are now joined for the front piece. FRONT PIECE: The first row is from the right side. Across the 37-37-39-41-41-43-45 stitches on the right front piece work: 2-2-4-6-6-8-10 stockinette stitches, A.5, A.6, A.2, A.2, A.3, cast on 13 stitches for the neckline (= A.8), across the 37-37-39-41-41-43-45 stitches on the left front piece work: A.6, A.2, A.2, A.3, A.4, then 2-2-4-6-6-8-10 stockinette stitches = 87-87-91-95-95-99-103 stitches. The cast-on stitches are continued according to A.8 and the cables are worked on the same row as in A.4 and A.5. Continue this pattern until the piece measures 28-27-29-30-29-29-28 cm = 11"-10⅝"-11⅜"-11¾"-11⅜"-11⅜"-11". Now increase for the armholes. INCREASE FOR ARMHOLES: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 2 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 2. The increased stitches are worked in stockinette stitch. ROW 2 (wrong side): Knit above knit and purl above purl. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 3-5-5-6-8-10-12 times (6-10-10-12-16-20-24 rows worked) = 93-97-101-107-111-119-127 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 31-32-34-35-36-38-39 cm = 12¼"-12½"-13⅜"-13¾"-14¼"-15"-15¼", finishing with a row from the wrong side. The front and back pieces are joined for the body. The piece is now measured from here! BODY: Work the 93-97-101-107-111-119-127 stitches on the front piece as before, cast on 4-8-10-12-14-16-18 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work the 77-81-85-91-97-105-113 stitches from the back piece as before, cast on 4-8-10-12-14-16-18 stitches (mid-under the sleeve) = 178-194-206-222-236-256-276 stitches. Continue the pattern in the round, the new stitches under each sleeve are worked in stockinette stitch. Work until the body measures 20-21-21-22-23-23-24 cm = 8"-8¼"-8¼"-8¾"-9"-9"-9½" from the join, with the last round worked without cables. Change to circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4. Work rib (knit 1, purl 1), AT THE SAME TIME increase 14-14-18-22-24-28-32 stitches evenly on the first round (do not increase across the cables) = 192-208-224-244-260-284-308 stitches. When the rib measures 4 cm = 1½", bind off with rib. The vest measures approx. 52-54-56-58-60-62-64 cm = 20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼", from by the neck on the shoulder. SLEEVE-EDGES: Lay the piece flat and insert 1 marker in the top of the armhole (NOTE! This is not the same as the knitted-up row on the front piece but 8 to 10 cm = 3⅛" to 4" down the front piece). Use circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4. Start from the right side in the middle stitch of the cast-on stitches under the sleeve. Knit up 92-96-100-104-108-112-116 stitches, with equal numbers of stitches on each side of the marker. Work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1), AT THE SAME TIME on the first row, decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker on top of the shoulder by knitting 2 together and purling 2 together (2 decreased stitches). Work until the edge measures 2½ cm = 1". Work one more round and decrease as before by the marker on top of the shoulder (2 decreased stitches). This shapes the sleeve-edge. Bind off with rib. NECK: Use circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4. Start from the right side by one knitted-up row and knit up 84-84-88-88-94-94-94 stitches around the neckline, inside the outermost stitch. The stitch count must be divisible by 2. Work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1) for 13 cm = 5⅛". Bind off with rib. |
