When making this hat, what is the purpose of decreasing 12 stitches after the end of the ribbing?

Hi Rebecca, We suggest having more stitches in the ribbing so the ribbing is not tight. These are then decreased before continuing with the rest of the hat. Happy knitting!

A "Run Run Rudolph" hat could be a festive and fun accessory related to the song and the Christmas holiday. It might feature imagery of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, sleigh bells, or other Christmas-themed elements. I really love this, and would be willing to give it a try.

Could you explain this part of the pattern instructions? “Then work pattern in the round according to A.1 (= 7-8-9 repeats of 12 stitches). “ I’m not clear what =7-8-9 repeats of 12 stitches refers to. Thank you.
18.07.2023 - 01:39DROPS Design answered:
Hi Kris, diagram A.1 is repeated on the round. If it says to work 7 repeats of A.1 in the round, then you work A.1 a total of 7 times after/next to each other in the round. The number you choose (7, 8 or 9) depends on the hat size you are working. Please also see the lesson HERE and particularly a part when working in the round. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagram A.1. The whole pattern is worked in stockinette stitch. DECREASE TIP: Decrease 1 stitch after each marker as follows: Slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (= 1 stitch decreased). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in the round with short circular needle; change to double pointed needles when necessary. HAT: Cast on 96-108-120 stitches with circular needle size 3 mm = US 2,5 and red. Knit 1 round. Then work rib (= knit 2 / purl 2) for 3 cm. Change to circular needle size 3.5 mm = US 4 and knit 1 round where you decrease 12 stitches evenly on round = 84-96-108 stitches. Then work pattern in the round according to A.1 (= 7-8-9 repeats of 12 stitches). REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! When A.1 has been completed the piece measures approx. 13 cm = 5⅛". Continue with light brown to finished length. When the piece measures 14-14-16 cm = 5½"-5½"-6¼", insert 6 markers in the piece with 14-16-18 stitches between each one. On the next round decrease 1 stitch after each marker – read DECREASE TIP (= 6 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every 2nd round a total of 5-6-6 times and then every round a total of 5-6-6 times = 24-24-36 stitches. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 12-12-18 stitches. Knit 1 round and knit all stitches together again 2 and 2 = 6-6-9 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten well. The hat measures approx. 20-21-23 cm = 8"-8¼"-9". NOSES: Crochet with red and crochet hook size 3 mm = US C as follows: Work 4 chain stitches and 1 double crochet in the 4th chain stitch from the hook, cut and fasten the strand. Work 1 nose for each reindeer (=7-8-9 noses). Tie the noses to each reindeer and fasten the strands. |
