Hi, I would like to knit Drops 91-25, dress, page 5 but the pattern suggests 20mm needles! Is this correct as I can't find any store that sells them this big? This would be something like a UK 00000! Also would the recommended 150g of Vienna yarn be enough? I look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks Kerry

Dear Mrs Nance, this dress is worked loosely with larger needle to get the lace effect, ie with needle size 20 mm and based on a tension of 5 sts x 6 rows in stocking st = 10x10 cm. You will find these needles at your DROPS store in UK. Happy knitting!

Gauge: 5 sts x 6 rows in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm. Knitting tips (for sides of Body and sleeves): All decs are made from right side. Dec 1 st inside 2 edge sts in garter st as follows: After 2 edge sts: slip 1 st as if to knit, K 1, psso. Before 2 edge sts: K 2 tog. Increasing tips (for the collar): inc 1 st by att knit 2 sts in the same sts. Measuring tips: Make all measurements when the piece is held up, otherwise the garment will be too long when worn. Front: Cast on 19-21-23-27-29 sts around 2 needles with Vienna (so that the cast-on edge will be elastic). Pull out one needle and knit stockinette st, keeping 2 sts in garter st at each side. When the piece measures approx. 20 cm fasten fringe tufts along cast-on edge. This is so the measurements will be accurate with the weight of the fringe. Fringe: 1 fringe tuft = 2 strands Vienna + 3 strands Snow (= 5 strands) approx. 60 cm long. Fold strands in half, pull loop through cast on edge at lower edge of dress and pull ends through loop. Fasten 1 fringe tuft at each side and then space fringe tufts between these with approx. 6 cm between each. After fringe is attached, continue to knit. W hen the piece measures 40 cm dec 1 st at each side – see knitting tips = 17-19-21-25-27 sts. When the piece measures 60 cm inc 1 st at each side inside of the edge sts in garter st by pulling up a st from previous row and knit in stockinette st = 19-21-23-27-29 sts. When the piece measures 69-71-73-75-77 cm bind off the outermost 1-1-2-3-4 sts at each side for armhole = 17-19-19-21-21 sts. When the piece measures 86-89-92-95-98 cm put the outermost 5-6-6-6-6 sts at each side on a st holder for shoulder = 7-7-7-9-9 sts remain on needles (= the collar). Collar: Continue in stockinette st with 2 sts in garter st at each side, increasing 3-3-4-4-4 sts evenly distributed on the first row – see increasing tips above. Do not inc over the sts in garter st.. Continue to inc every other row: 4-4-4-4-5 sts 1 time and 3 sts 1 time = 17-17-18-20-21 sts. Continue until the collar measures 30-32-32-34-34 cm, K 1 row (wrong side row) and then bind off all sts – so that the bound-off edge will not be too tight, make and bind off a yo approx. every 3 sts. Back: Cast on and knit the same as the front, but dec 1 st at each side when the piece measures 30 cm and inc 1 st at each side when the piece measures 50 cm. Bind off for armhole and complete as on front. Assembly: Sew shoulder seams with Kitchener st – see Fig.1 on page 59 of Drops No. 91. Sleeve: Pick up sts along armhole and knit sleeves down. Pick up loosely 17-18-19-20-21 sts with Vienna – see Fig.2 (do not pick up sts over the 1-1-2-3-4 sts bound off at each side for armhole on Body). Knit stockinette st. When the piece measures approx. 2-2-4-6-8 cm put a marker at each side (to show where sleeves will be sewn to Body). Measure the work from here. Continue in stockinette st keeping 2 sts in garter st at each side. When the piece measures 2-2-2-5-3 cm dec 1 st at one side – see knitting tips. When the piece measures 9-9-8.5-9-7 cm dec 1 st on the other side. Repeat dec 2-2-2-3-3 times at each side every 7-7-6.5-4-4 cm (that is, every 14-14-13-8-8 cm between decs on the same side) = 11-12-13-12-13 sts. Continue until sleeve measures 54-54-53-51-49 cm from the marker, bind off – so that the bound-off edge will not be too tight, make and bind off a yo approx. every 3 sts. Assembly: Sew the collar in the outermost sts, but one side sew only approx. 8 cm so that it will open flat. Sew side seams, leaving 10 cm at lower edge open for side split. Be sure the seams are not too tight. Sew sleeves up to the marker and sew sleeves into Body where you bound off for armhole – the marker on sleeves should match up with the side seams on Body. Buttons: Crochet with Snow as follows: Row 1: ch 2, then 5 sc in the first of the 2 ch, finish with 1 sl st in first sc. Row 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each sc and finish with 1 sl st in first sc at the start of row (= 10 sc). Row 3: ch 1, 1 sc in each sc and finish with 1 sl st in first sc at the start of row (= 10 sc). Row 4: ch 1, 1 sc in every other sc and finish with 1 sl st in first sc at the start of rows (= 5 sc). Tack around opening and pull tight – do not put a button inside or it will be too heavy. Make a 2nd button and fasten them on the collar. HAT: Sizes: one-size Materials: Garnstudio SNOW 50 gr nr 23, dark beige 50 gr nr 32, dark purple heather 50 gr nr 33, red heather 50 gr nr 34, rust heather Yarn information and alternatives -- see last page.. DROPS 7 mm [US K] crochet hook, or size needed to obtain correct gauge. Crochet gauge: 9.5 dc x 6 rows = 10 x 10 cm. Crochet tips: Replace the first dc of each row with ch 3. Every row ends with 1 dc in the ch 3 at the start of previous row. Stripes: See the chart for Model No. 25 on page 59 of Drops No. 91. 1 row of the chart = 1 row on hat. Hat: Ch 3 with dark beige and join into a ring with 1 sl st in 1st ch. Crochet following instructions below in stripes following chart for Pattern 1. Row 1: 8 dc in ring. Row 2: * 1 dc in first dc, 2 dc in the next dc *, repeat * - * around row = 12 dc. Row 3: * 1 dc in first dc, 2 dc in the next dc *, repeat * - * around row = 18 dc. Row 4: * 1 dc in each of the first 2 dc, 2 dc in the next dc *, repeat * - * around row = 24 dc. Row 5: * 1 dc in each of the first 3 dc, 2 dc in the next dc *, repeat * - * around row = 30 dc. Row 6: * 1 dc in each of the first 2 dc, 2 dc in the next dc *, repeat * - * around row = 40 dc. Row 7: * 1 dc in each of the first 4 dc, 2 dc in the next dc *, repeat * - * around row = 48 dc. Now crochet 1 dc in each dc until Pattern 1 has been crocheted 1 time, the hat measures approx. 24 cm. Pompom: Make 2 large pompoms with dark purple heather, rust heather and red heather – see instructions on page 3 of Drops No. 91. The pompoms should measure approx. 8-9 cm in diameter. Fasten 1 pompom at lower edge of each side of hat. |
