---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (when working back and forth): Knit on all rows, i.e. knit from right side and knit from wrong side. 1 ridge vertically = knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. Read the diagrams from right to left when working from right side and from left to right when working from wrong side. DECREASE TIP-1 (applies to decrease in cables): Decrease 2 stitches in every cable like this from right side (6 stitches in cable become 4 stitches in stockinette stitch): Knit 2 twisted together, knit 2, knit 2 together (= 2 stitches decreased). DECREASE TIP-2 (applies to armholes): All decreases are done from the right side. DECREASE AFTER 9 STITCHES AS FOLLOWS: Purl 2 twisted together (= 1 stitch decreased). DECREASE BEFORE 9 STITCHES AS FOLLOWS: Work until 11 stitches remain on row, purl 2 together (= 1 stitch decreased). DECREASE TIP-3 (applies to sleeve edges): Work until 3 stitches remain before marker, purl 2 together, knit 2 (marker is in the middle of these 2 stitches), purl 2 twisted together (= 2 stitches decreased). ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- WAISTCOAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF PIECE: In this pattern needles of different length have been used, begin with fitting length for number of stitches and switch as needed. Piece is worked in the round on circular needle, from the bottom and up to armholes. Then divide the piece for front piece and back piece and finish each part separately back and forth. Sew the shoulder seams. Pick up stitches around the armholes and work sleeve edges in the round. Finish by picking up stitches around the neck and work a neck edge in the round. BODY: Cast on 256-288-320-320-352-384-416 stitches on circular needle size 3 MM = US 2.5 with 1 strand DROPS Nord or 1 strand DROPS Alpaca together with 1 strand DROPS Kid-Silk (= 2 strands). Knit 1 round. Then work rib as follows: Purl 1, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until 3 stitches remain on round, knit 2 and purl 1. Continue like this until rib measures 3-3-3-4-4-5-5 cm = 1⅛"-1⅛"-1⅛"-1½"-1½"-2"-2". Now work PATTERN – read explanation above, switch to circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4, insert 1 marker thread at the beginning of round (= in the side on body) and work like this (pattern should fit nicely over rib): * Work A.1 8-9-10-10-11-12-13 times in total, work A.2 8-9-10-10-11-12-13 times in total *, insert 1 marker thread before next stitch (= in the side on body), work from *-* 1 more time. Continue pattern in the round like this. Remember to follow the knitting gauge! Work until piece measures 23-25-26-27-27-28-29 cm = 9"-9¾"-10¼"-10⅝"-10⅝"-11"-11⅜" – adjust so that next round is an even round in diagrams (this is important to be able to cable from right side when piece is worked back and forth on needle). Work next round as before and decrease at the same time 2-2-2-2-2-4-4 stitches on each side of both marker threads by decreasing 2 stitches in each of the 1-1-1-1-1-2-2 cables closest to the marker thread in each side – read DECREASE TIP-1 (= 8-8-8-8-8-16-16 stitches decreased) = 248-280-312-312-344-368-400 stitches. Now divide the piece for front piece and back piece. DIVISION AT ARMHOLES: On next round (= uneven round in diagrams), divide piece into front piece and back piece as follows: Bind off the first 5-5-5-5-5-11-11 stitches for armhole, work as before over the next 114-130-146-146-162-162-178 stitches (= front piece), bind off the next 10-10-10-10-10-22-22 stitches for armhole (marker thread is in the middle of these stitches), work as before over the next 114-130-146-146-162-162-178 stitches (= back piece), bind off the last 5-5-5-5-5-11-11 stitches for armhole, cut the yarn. Now work back piece and front piece back and forth on needle until finished measurements. BACK PIECE: = 114-130-146-146-162-162-178 stitches. Continue pattern back and forth - work the outermost stitch in each side in GARTER STITCH - read explanation above. AT THE SAME TIME on next row from right side begin the decreases for armholes. Decrease 1 stitch in each side inside the outermost 9 stitches in each side (= 1 stitch in garter stitch, purl 1, 6 stitches cable, purl 1) - read DECREASE TIP-2. Decrease like this every other row 6-12-22-22-22-20-20 times and then every 4th row 2-4-2-2-2-4-4 times (= 8-16-24-24-24-24-24 stitches decreased for armhole) = 98-98-98-98-114-114-130 stitches. Continue to work until piece measures approx. 46-49-51-53-55-57-59 cm = 18"-19¼"-20"-21"-21⅝"-22½"-23¼". Now decrease 2 stitches in each of the middle 6-6-6-6-6-6-6 cables – remember DECREASE TIP-1 (= 12-12-12-12-12-12-12 stitches decreased). On next row bind off the middle 32-32-32-32-32-32-32 stitches for neck and finish each shoulder separately. SHOULDER (back piece): = 27-27-27-27-35-35-43 stitches. Continue pattern back and forth as before - AT THE SAME TIME bind off for neck at the beginning of every row from neck as follows: Bind off 1 stitch 2 times. AT THE SAME TIME when piece measures 46-49-51-53-55-57-59 cm = 18"-19¼"-20"-21"-21⅝"-22½"-23¼" from cast-on edge, slip stitches on a thread for diagonal shoulder as follows - NOTE: To avoid cutting the yarn being used, work the stitches before slipping them on a thread): Begin from armhole, slip the outermost 6-6-6-6-7-7-8 stitches on thread 3-3-3-3-4-4-4 times and then the last 7-7-7-7-5-5-9 stitches on thread = 25-25-25-25-33-33-41 stitches on thread. Cut the yarn. Work the other shoulder the same way. FRONT PIECE: = 114-130-146-146-162-162-178 stitches. Continue pattern back and forth - work the outermost stitch in each side in garter stitch. AT THE SAME TIME on next row from right side begin the decreases for armholes. Decrease 1 stitch in each side inside the outermost 9 stitches in each side as on back piece - read DECREASE TIP-2. 42-44-45-46-47-48-49 cm = 16½"-17¼"-17¾"-18"-18½"-19"-19¼". Now decrease 2 stitches in each of the 4-4-4-4-4-4-4 middle cables – remember DECREASE TIP-1 (= 8-8-8-8-8-8-8 stitches decreased). On next row slip the middle 22-22-22-22-22-22-22 stitches on 1 thread for neck and finish each shoulder separately. SHOULDER (front piece): = 34-34-34-34-42-42-50 stitches. Continue pattern back and forth as before - AT THE SAME TIME bind off for neck at the beginning of every row from neck as follows: Bind off 2 stitches 3 times and 1 stitch 3 times - work stitches that do not fit a whole cable repetition when decreasing in stockinette stitch. AT THE SAME TIME when piece measures 46-49-51-53-55-57-59 cm = 18"-19¼"-20"-21"-21⅝"-22½"-23¼" from cast-on edge, slip stitches on a thread for diagonal shoulder the same way as on back piece, i.e. begin from armhole, slip the outermost 6-6-6-6-7-7-8 stitches on a thread 3-3-3-3-4-4-4 times and then slip the last 7-7-7-7-5-5-9 stitches on a thread (remember for work the stitches before slipping them on a thread) = 25-25-25-25-33-33-41 stitches on the thread. Cut the yarn. ASSEMBLY: Slip stitches from one of the diagonal shoulders back on needle size 3.5 MM = US 4, knit 1 row from wrong side over all stitches and decrease at the same time 6-6-6-6-8-8-10 stitches evenly = 19-19-19-19-25-25-31 stitches (to avoid holes get the yarn between 2 stitches and knit twisted together with first stitch on next row). Bind off somewhat loosely by knitting from the right side. Repeat on each shoulder. Sew shoulder seams inside bind-off edges = 2 rows purl (seen from right side) towards each other mid on top of shoulder. SLEEVE EDGES: Insert 1 marker at the bottom of armhole and 1 marker in the shoulder seam. Use short circular needle size 3 MM = US 2.5 and 1 strand of each quality (= 2 strands), pick up stitches around the armhole from right side as follows: Begin at the bottom of armhole and pick up approx. 104-112-112-120-128-136-144 stitches around the armhole inside 1 stitch (number of stitches must be divisible by 8) – adjust so that the number of stitches is the same in each side between the 2 markers, and adjust so that there is 1 knit stitch on each side of both markers (rib = knit 2/purl 2). Work rib as follows: Knit 1, * purl 2, knit 2 *, work from *-* until 3 stitches remain, purl 2 and knit 1. Continue rib like this but on every other round decrease 1 stitch on each side of the 2 markers - read DECREASE TIP-3. Decrease like this every other round until rib measures 3-3-3-4-4-4-4 cm = 1⅛"-1⅛"-1⅛"-1½"-1½"-1½"-1½" and rib fits knit 2/purl 2 again. Bind off stitches with knit over knit and purl over purl. NECK EDGE: Use short circular needle size 3 MM = US 2.5 and 1 strand of each quality (= 2 strands), pick up stitches around the neck from right side as follows: Begin at one shoulder seam and pick up approx. 92-92-96-96-100-100-104 stitches (including stitch from thread) - number of stitches must be divisible by 4 - adjust so that rib fits nicely over the 4 middle cables at the front of neck, i.e. pick up 8 stitches over each repetition from pattern. Work rib (= knit 2/purl 2) in the round for 3-3-3-4-4-4-4 cm = 1⅛"-1⅛"-1⅛"-1½"-1½"-1½"-1½". Bind off stitches with knit over knit and purl over purl. |
