Do you recommend washing and blocking the gauge before measuring?

Dear Susan, yes, you soak and block the swatch before measuring. Happy knitting!

If you don't want bottom ribbing, can you just cast on number of stitches given after the decrease when transitioning from ribbing to stockinette?Don't understand why you have to decrease stitches.
09.09.2026 - 23:14DROPS Design answered:
Hi Joanna, You can of course leave out the ribbing and cast on the number of stitches given after the decreases. The decreases after the rib are because there are extra stitches on the ribbing so it is not tight. Regards, Drops Team

Why the need for a circular needle? Can I knit this on straight needles??
17.08.2026 - 13:07DROPS Design answered:
Dear Carole, we are using here circular needle for front and back piece to get enough room for all stitches, but then work back and forth, so that you can use straight needles instead. Only sleeve edges and neck are worked in the round, you would have then just to adapt the pattern (sew just one shoulder before picking up sts around neck; then pick up sts along armholes and finish with the side seam). Happy knitting!

Hi there - loving your pattern for the tank top. I'm very new to knitting and only ever knitted with straight needles - I was just wondering if you have a similar pattern to use with straight needles please. Thankyou so much.
15.05.2026 - 11:55DROPS Design answered:
Dear Kerrie, this is a vest pattern. Since it's worked back and forth you can simply use straight needles instead of circular needles. However, the round neck and sleeve-edges need to be worked in the round in circular needles. So you can work most of the pattern in straight needles and then try and work the edges with circular needles. Happy knitting!

My first major project will be the Isla Slipover vest in medium using either DROPS AIR or DROPS ANDES. The problem I have is not knowing just how many balls of yarn I will need to complete the vest?
20.03.2026 - 02:59DROPS Design answered:
Hi Melissa, Drops Air is sold in 50 g balls and Drops Andes in 100 g balls. So you will need 6 balls of Air (and work with 2 strands) or 3 balls of Andes and work with a single strand). Regards, Drops Team.

Hi, I would like to use Merino Cotton yarn to make a more spring/summer-friendly version of the project. Would 2 strands of Merino Cotton be enough to substitute for 2 strands of DROPS Air? If so, should I use the same size needles as recommended for DROPS Air?
13.03.2026 - 11:50DROPS Design answered:
Dear Anna, Cotton Merino belongs to yarn group B while Air belongs to yarn group C, most of the time you can replace 1 strand yarn group E as Wish here with 2 strands yarn group C as Air here, but Cotton Merino might not be a good alternative even with 2 strands - see a swatch of 2 strands Cotton Merino worked together here. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge = knit 2 rows. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- VEST – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The front and back pieces are worked separately, back and forth. The sleeve edges and neck are worked in the round to finish. BACK PIECE: Cast on 69-73-77-85-93-103 stitches with circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75 and DROPS Wish or 2 strands DROPS Air. The first row is worked as follows from the right side: 2 edge stitches in GARTER STITCH – read description above, work rib (purl 1, knit 1) until there are 3 stitches left, purl 1 and 2 edge stitches in garter stitch. Continue this rib for 6 cm = 2⅜" On the next row from the right side work as follows: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, work stockinette stitch and decrease 17-17-17-19-19-21 stitches evenly spaced over the next 67-71-75-83-91-101 stitches and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch = 52-56-60-66-74-82 stitches. Change to circular needle size 8 MM = US 11 and continue with stockinette stitch and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch on each side. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! When the piece measures 24-25-26-27-28-29 cm = 9½"-9¾"-10¼"-10⅝"-11"-11⅜", bind off for the armholes at the beginning of every row on each side as follows: 3 stitches 1-1-1-1-1-2 times, 2 stitches 0-1-2-2-3-3 times and 1 stitch 5-4-3-5-6-5 times = 36-38-40-42-44-48 stitches. Continue with stockinette stitch until the piece measures 51-53-55-57-59-61 cm = 20"-21"-21⅝"-22½"-23¼"-24". Bind off the middle 20-20-22-22-24-24 stitches for the neck and finish each shoulder separately. Then bind off 1 stitch on the next row from the neck = 7-8-8-9-9-11 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 54-56-58-60-62-64 cm = 21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼". Loosely bind off with knit from the right side. Work the other shoulder in the same way. FRONT PIECE: Cast on and work in the same way as the back piece until the piece measures 45-47-48-50-51-53 cm = 17¾"-18½"-19"-19¾"-20"-21". Bind off the middle 8-8-8-10-10-10 stitches for the neck and finish each shoulder separately. Bind off at the beginning of each row from the neck as follows: 2 stitches 2 times and 1 stitch 3-3-4-3-4-4 times = 7-8-8-9-9-11 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 54-56-58-60-62-64 cm = 21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼". Loosely bind off with knit from the right side. Work the other shoulder in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. Sew the side seams in the outermost loop of the outermost ridge, so the seam is flat. Leave 6 cm = 2⅜" at the bottom for the split. SLEEVE-EDGES: Use short circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75. Start at the bottom of the armhole and knit up from the right side, inside 1 stitch, approx. 72-72-76-76-80-84 stitches around the armhole (the number of stitches should be divisible by 2). Work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1) for 4 cm = 1½". Loosely bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Work the other sleeve-edge in the same way. NECK: Use short circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75. Start at the top of one shoulder and knit up from the right side, inside 1 stitch, approx. 54-54-60-60-64-64 stitches around the neck (the number of stitches should be divisible by 2). Work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1) for 6 cm = 2⅜". Loosely bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. |
