I am really confused as to the instructions when you get to the top of the left mitten and are decreasing. If you decrease the 5 times as you state then that is 5 times 4 decreases each which is 20 stitches. 32 - 20 is 12 stitches. You state there are 6 stitches left on needles? Where do you do the other decreases and what does it mean to work the 6 stitches in every cable together 2 by 2? Thank you for your help

Hello Debbie Todd! You have to knit 2 together 3 times over 6 cables' stitches= 3 sts decreased over cable. And you have 2 cables, so 6 sts decreased. Hope it helps! Happy knitting!

---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. INCREASE TIP: Begin before stitch with marker thread, make 1 yarn over, knit 1 (= stitch with marker thread), make 1 yarn over (= 2 stitches increased). On next round knit yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. DECREASE TIP: Begin 2 stitches before marker and knit 2 together, marker, slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch worked (= 2 stitches decreased). ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- MITTENS - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Worked in the round on double pointed needles. LEFT MITTEN: Cast on 32 stitches on double pointed needles size 6 MM = US 10 with DROPS Wish. Work as follows: A.1 over the first 30 stitches (= 2 repetitions of A.1), finish with 2 knit. Work rib like this for 6 cm = 2⅜". When piece measures 6 cm = 2⅜", switch to double pointed needles size 7 MM = US 10.75. Work next round as follows: 15 stitches in stockinette stitch, A.2 (= 15 stitches), 2 stitches in stockinette stitch. Continue pattern like this. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! When piece measures 14 cm = 5½", insert 1 marker thread in the 12th stitch on round. On next round increase for thumb gusset by increasing 1 stitch on each side of stitch with marker thread - read INCREASE TIP (= 2 stitches increased). Increase like this on each side of the increased stitches also on next round = 5 stitches in thumb gusset. Work 2 rounds without increase. On next round slip the 5 thumb gusset stitches on a thread, cast in addition on 1 new stitch on row over stitches on thread = 32 stitches on needle. Continue in stockinette stitch and A.2 until piece measures 24 cm = 9½" (approx. 3 cm = 1⅛" remain until finished measurements, try the mitten on and work to desired length). Insert 1 marker at the beginning of round and 1 marker after 13 stitches (= in each side on mitten). On next round decrease 1 stitch on each side of both markers – read DECREASE TIP (= 4 stitches decreased). Decrease like this on every round 5 times in total in each side, repeat A.2 as far as it fits, then work in stockinette stitch over all stitches, when there is no longer room for a cable, work the 6 stitches in every cable together 2 by 2). After all decreases are done there are 6 stitches on needles. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten. Mitten measures approx. 27 cm = 10⅝" from cast-on edge. THUMB: Slip the 5 thumb gusset stitches back on double pointed needles size 7 MM = US 10.75. Pick in addition up 5 stitches behind the thumb (i.e. pick up 1 stitch in stitch cast on + 2 stitch on each side of this stitch) = 10 stitches. Work in stockinette stitch in the round until thumb measures 5 cm = 2". Insert 1 marker at the beginning of round and 1 marker after 5 stitches. On next round decrease 1 stitch on each side of both markers the same way as at the top of mitten (= 4 stitches decreased). Decrease also on next round = 2 stitches remain on needles. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten. RIGHT MITTEN: Cast on 32 stitches on double pointed needles size 6 MM = US 10 with DROPS Wish. Work as follows: Knit 2, A.1 over the next 30 stitches (= 2 repetitions of A.1). Work rib like this for 6 cm = 2⅜". When piece measures 6 cm = 2⅜", switch to double pointed needles size 7 MM = US 10.75. Work next round as follows: 2 stitches in stockinette stitch, A.2 (= 15 stitches), 15 stitches in stockinette stitch. Continue pattern like this. When piece measures 14 cm = 5½", insert 1 marker thread in the 21st stitch on round. On next round increase for thumb gusset by increasing 1 stitch on each side of stitch with marker thread - read INCREASE TIP! Increase like this on each side of the increased stitches also on next round = 5 stitches in thumb gusset. Work the rest of the mitten the same way as left mitten. Work thumb the same way as on left mitten. |
