Gauge: 23 sts x 30 rows on larger needles in pattern = 10 x 10 cm (4» x 4»)

Pattern: See chart (1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette st.

Border: Knit 3 cm (1.25») stockinette st, purl 1 row for the folding edge – measure the work from here - work 3 cm (1.25») stockinette st.

Body: Knit the border back and forth on the needles, then join the sts and knit the cardigan in the round. Extra sts are worked for armhole and center front steeks. Cast on 264 (288) sts on smaller needles with olive and knit Border. Change to larger circular needles, cast on 5 sts for the center front steek (these sts are not knit in the pattern); join and place a marker at the join. Knit Pattern 1 once, starting Pattern after the 5 sts at the center front. Then repeat Pattern 2 until the work measures 69.5 (73.5) cm (27.5», 29»).
At the same time, when the piece measures 47 (50) cm (18.5» (19.75»)), work the next row as follows: 5 sts for the center front steek, 63 (69) sts for the front, bind off 6 sts for armhole, 126 (138) sts for the back, bind off 6 sts for armhole, 63 (69) sts for the front. On the next row cast on 5 sts over the 6 bound-off sts on either side (these sts are for the steeks). Then dec 1 st each side of the 5 armhole sts every other row 5 (7) times. Fronts = 58 (62) sts + 5 steek sts, back = 116 (124) sts.
When the work measures 53 (57) cm (21», 22.5»), bind off the center front 9 (11) sts including the 5 steek sts for the neck. Bind off 2 sts at each neck edge every other row 2 times, dec 1 st every other row 8 times, then 1 st every 4th row 1 time, and 1 st every 6th row 2 times. When the work measures 69.5 (73.5) cm (27.5», 29») knit Pattern 3 to finished dimensions.

Back: When the work measures 70 (74) cm (27-5/8», 29-1/8»), bind off the center 30 (32) sts for the neck. Bind off 2 sts at each neck edge on the next row.

Fronts and back: Bind off all sts when the work measures 72 (76) cm (28-3/8», 30») and Pattern 3 is complete.

Sleeves: Cast on 50 (52) sts on smaller double pointed needles with olive; knit border. Join, placing a marker at the join. Change to larger needles and inc 8 sts evenly distributed on the 1st row = 58 (60) sts. Knit Pattern 4, centering the pattern on the sleeve, then repeat Pattern 5 to finished dimensions. At the same time, inc 1 st each side of marker:
Size S/M: 29 times every 4th row
Size M/L: 30 times alternately every 3rd and 4th row
= 116 (120) sts. When the work measures 45.5 (44.5) cm (18», 17.5»), put 3 sts on each side of marker on a stitch holder and knit the work back and forth on the needles. Then put sts on a stitch holder for sleeve caps at each edge every other row: 5 (4) sts 7 (9) times. The work measures 51 cm (20»). Put all sts back on the same needles. Knit 2 cm (0.75») reverse stockinette st for the seam allowance. Bind off loosely.
Assembly: Sew a marker thread down through the steek sts on either side and at the center front. Sew two machine seams around the marker thread, 1st seam = 1/2 stitch from the marker thread, 2nd seam = 1/2 stitch from first seam. Cut for armholes and at the center front. Sew shoulder seams. Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately 1 st into the last row of knitting on the sleeve before the reverse stockinette and a st on the body after the machine seam. Turn the cardigan wrong side out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the cut edge on the body.
Pick up 120-130 sts along the left front on smaller circular needles with green and knit Border back and forth on the needles. Repeat along the right front, but after 1 cm (3/8») make 7 buttonholes evenly distributed on the row (1 buttonhole = bind off 3 sts and cast on 3 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row). Fold the edges over double against the wrong side over the cut edge on the body and sew.
Pick up 130-140 sts around the neck on smaller circular needles with green and knit Border as follows: 2 cm (0.75») stockinette st, change to olive and with the right side facing, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, knit 1 row, change back to green and knit 2 cm (0.75») stockinette st. Bind off all sts. Fold edges over and sew. Sew on buttons.
