---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.3. INCREASE TIP: Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over, on next round knit yarn over twisted to avoid holes. Then work the new stitches in stockinette stitch. DECREASE TIP: DECREASE AFTER MARKER THREAD AS FOLLOWS: Knit 1, slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch worked (= 1 stitch decreased). DECREASE BEFORE MARKER THREAD AS FOLLOWS: Work until 3 stitches remain before marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 1 (= 1 stitch decreased) ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- MITTENS - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Mittens are worked in the round on double pointed needles from wrist to fingertip. Increase for thumb gusset, then slip thumb gusset stitches on a thread. Decrease stitches at the top of mitten. Finish by picking up stitches around the opening for thumb before working the thumb in the round. If 0 is given for the chosen size, it means that you skip the information until next information. LEFT MITTEN: Cast on 49-55 stitches on double pointed needles size 3.5 MM = US 4 with DROPS Merino Extra Fine. Switch to double pointed needles size 3 MM = US 2.5 (cast on on a thicker needle size to get a more elastic cast-on edge). Work first round as follows: Work rib (= knit 1/purl 1) over the first 4-6 stitches, knit 1, A.1, work rib (= knit 1/purl 1) over the last 30-34 stitches. Continue rib like this for 10 cm = 4". Work next round as follows: Switch to double pointed needles size 3.5 MM = US 4, work 5-7 stitches in stockinette stitch and decrease at the same time 1-2 stitches evenly over these stitches, work A.2 over stitches in A.1, work 30-34 stitches in stockinette stitch and decrease at the same time 4-5 stitches evenly over these stitches = 44-48 stitches. Work next round as follows: Work 4-5 stitches in stockinette stitch, work A.2, work 26-29 stitches in stockinette stitch. Continue pattern like this. Remember to follow the knitting gauge! When piece measures 11 cm = 4⅜" from cast-on edge, increase 1 stitch for thumb gusset on each side of the last stitch on round - read INCREASE TIP (= 2 stitches increased). Increase like this on the outside of the increased stitches every 3rd round 7-8 times in total = 58-64 stitches. Work until piece measures 17-18 cm = 6¾"-7" from cast-on edge, work round as before but slip the 15-17 thumb stitches on a thread and cast on 1 new stitch on needle over stitches on thread = 44-48 stitches. Continue in stockinette stitch and A.2 as before until mitten measures approx. 26-28 cm = 10¼"-11" from cast-on edge - mitten measures approx. 16-18 cm = 6¼"-7" measured after rib and approx. 4 cm = 1½" remain until finished measurements (adjust to work at least 3 rounds after a round with cables). Insert 1 marker thread at beginning of round and 1 marker thread after 24-26 stitches (= in the side of mitten, i.e. there are 24-26 stitches on the outside of mitten and 20-22 stitches on the inside of mitten). Now begin decrease at the top of mitten. Work in stockinette stitch in the round as before but work A.3 over stitches in A.2. Decrease in addition after/before marker threads and decrease differently on the outside and inside of mitten - read DECREASE TIP and decrease as follows: OUTSIDE OF MITTEN: Decrease 1 stitch after/before marker thread every other round 5-6 times in total. INSIDE OF MITTEN: Decrease 1 stitch after/before marker thread every other round 5-5 times in total and then every round 2-3 times in total. After all decreases are done 12 stitches remain on needle. On next round knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 6 stitches remain. Cut the yarn and pull yarn through stitches, tighten together and fasten. Mitten measures approx. 30-32 cm = 11¾"-12½" from cast-on edge. THUMB: Slip the 15-17 thumb stitches from thread on double pointed needles size 3.5 MM = US 4 and pick in addition up 4-3 stitches at the back of thumb = 19-20 stitches. Work in stockinette stitch in the round until thumb measures approx. 6-6½ cm = 2⅜"-2½". On next round knit 1-0 stitches, then knit the remaining stitches together 2 by 2 = 10-10 stitches remain. On next round knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 5-5 stitches. Cut the yarn and pull yarn through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten. Thumb measures approx. 6½-7 cm = 2½"-2¾". RIGHT MITTEN: Cast on 49-55 stitches on double pointed needles size 3.5 MM = US 4 with DROPS Merino Extra Fine. Switch to double pointed needles size 3 MM = US 2.5. Work first round as follows: Work rib (= purl 1/knit 1) over the first 30-34 stitches, A.1, work rib (= knit 1/purl 1) over the next 4-6 stitches, knit 1. Continue rib like this for 10 cm = 4". Work next round as follows: Switch to double pointed needles size 3.5 MM = US 4, work 30-34 stitches in stockinette stitch and decrease at the same time 4-5 stitches evenly over these stitches, work A.2 over stitches in A.1, work 5-7 stitches in stockinette stitch and decrease at the same time 1-2 stitches evenly over these stitches = 44-48 stitches. Work next round as follows: Work 26-29 stitches in stockinette stitch, work A.2, work 4-5 stitches in stockinette stitch. Continue pattern like this. When piece measures 11 cm = 4⅜" from cast-on edge, increase 1 stitch for thumb gusset on each side of the first stitch on round - read INCREASE TIP (= 2 stitches increased). Insert 1 marker thread at beginning of round and 1 marker thread after 20-22 stitches (= in the side of mitten, i.e. there are 20-22 stitches on the inside of mitten and 24-26 stitches on the outside of mitten). Now begin decrease at the top of mitten. Work in stockinette stitch in the round as before but work A.3 over stitches in A.2. On next round knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 6 stitches remain. Cut the yarn and pull yarn through stitches, tighten together and fasten. Mitten measures approx. 30-32 cm = 11¾"-12½" from cast-on edge. Work thumb the same way as on left mitten. |
