Red apple: has green stem and orange bottom. Orange apple: has green stem and red bottom. Green apple: has red stem and orange bottom. Seed Stitch (on an even number of sts): Row 1: * K 1, P 1 * Row 2: * P 1, K 1 * Seed Stitch (on an odd number of sts): All rows: K 1, *P 1, K 1* Garter Stitch, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows. Front: Cast on 62-68-74 (82-90-98) sts on smaller needles with green. Knit garter st as follows: 4 rows green, 4 rows red, 4 rows orange. Change to larger circular needles and marine and establish the square pattern as follows: 1 edge st (knit in garter st throughout), 20-22-18 (20-22-24) sts stockinette st, 20-22-18 (20-22-24) sts seed st, 20-22-18 (20-22-24) sts stockinette st, 0-0-18 (20-22-24) sts seed st, 1 edge st (knit in garter st throughout). After 8.5- 9.5- 8 (8.25- 9- 9.75) cm [3-⅜" - 3.75" - 3-⅛" (3.25" - 3.5" - 3-⅝")] of square pattern, reverse and knit stockinette st over the seed st and seed st over stockinette st for 8.5- 9.5- 8 (8.25- 9- 9.75) cm [3-⅜" -3.75" -3-⅛" (3.25" -3.5" -3-⅝")]. Continue to change on the squares pattern until finished dimensions = 3-3-4 (4-4-4) squares in height. Put a marker at the start of the armhole when the work measures 20-22-24 (24-24-26) cm [7-⅞" - 8-⅝" - 9.5" (9.5" - 9.5" - 10.25")]. At the same time, when the work measures 20-22-24 (24-26-28) cm [7-⅞" - 8-⅝" - 9.5" (9.5" - 10.25" - 11")], bind off 6 sts for a placket at the center front. When the placket split measures 5-5-6 (6-7-7) cm [2" -2" -2-⅜" (2-⅜" - 2.75" - 2.75")] bind off at each neck edge every other row: 3 sts 0-1-1 (1-2-2) times, 2 sts 2-1-2 (2-1-1) times, 1 st 2-2-1 (2-2-2) times. Bind off when the work measures approx. 30-33-36 (37-40- 43) cm [11.75"-13" -14-⅛" (14.5"-15.75" -16-⅞")] (adjust to obtain the height of a whole square). Now embroider the apples on the front in the stockinette st squares -- see squares chart for placement and color of apples (see instructions on apples above). The apples should be placed in the center of the stockinette st squares. Back: Cast on and knit like the front but bind off for the neck when the work measures 28-31-34 (35-38- 41) cm [11" - 12.25" - 13-⅜" (13.75" - 14-⅞" - 16-⅛")]. Bind off the center 14-16-18 (20-22-22) sts, then bind off at each neck edge every other row: 2 st 1 time. Bind off as on the front when the work measures 30-33-36 (37-40-43) cm [11.75" - 13" - 14-⅛" (14.5" - 15.75" - 16-⅞")] (adjust to obtain the height of a whole square). Right sleeve: Cast on 38-40-42 (44-44-48) sts on smaller needles with green. Knit garter st as follows: 4 rows green, 4 rows red, 4 rows orange. Change to larger needle and marine and knit square pattern as on the body. Establish square pattern as follows: 9-9-12 (12-11-12) sts seed st, 20-22-18 (20-22-24) sts stockinette st, 9-9-12 (12-11-12) sts seed st. At the same time, when the work measures 6 cm [3-⅛"], inc 1 st on each side: 3-4-5 (7-13-13) times: Sizes 0/3 + 12/18 mos.: every 9th row Size 6/9 mos.: every 10th row Size 2 years: every 7th row Size 3/4 years: alternately every 4th and 5th row Size 5/6 years: every 5th row = 44-48-52 (58-70-74) sts - the increased sts should be knit into the squares pattern. Bind off when the work measures 14-17-19 (21-25-28) cm [5.5" - 6.75" - 7.5" (8.25" - 9-⅞" - 11")]. Embroider a green apple on the 1st row of squares in the stockinette st square centered on the sleeve with sts (see instructions on the apples above) -- place the apple in the center of the square. Left sleeve: Cast on and knit like the right but knit the 1st row of the squares pattern as follows: 9-9-12 (12-11-12) sts stockinette st, 20-22-18 (20-22-24) sts seed st, 9-9-12 (12-11-12) sts stockinette st. Embroider a red apple on the 2nd row of squares in the stockinette st square centered on the sleeve with sts (see instructions on the apples above) -- place the apple in the center of the square. Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Sew sleeves to the body. Sew sleeve and side seams in one. Pick up approx. 12-24 sts along the left side of the placket split on smaller needle with marine and knit 2 cm [0.75"] rib, bind off. Repeat along the right side of the split, but after 0.5 cm [0.25"] make 2-2-2 (2-2-3) buttonholes (1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts over the bound off sts on the next row), bind off. Pick up approx. 78-84 sts around the neck from the wrong side on smaller needles with marine. Knit rib for 6 to 8 cm [2-⅜" to 3-⅛"], then knit 4 rows garter st. Bind off all sts. Sew on buttons. |
