------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- INCREASE TIP-1: INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE LEFT from right side: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the back loop. INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT from right side: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the front loop. INCREASE TIP-2: INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE LEFT, from wrong side: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the back and purl through the front loop. INCREASE ONE STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT, from wrong side: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the previous row, pick up the strand from the front and purl through the back loop. 3 EDGE-STITCHES I-CORD: BEGINNING OF ROW: Work the 3 edge-stitches as follows: Slip 1 stitch purl-wise with the strand in front of the piece, knit 1, slip 1 stitch purl-wise with the strand in front of the piece. END OF ROW: Work the 3 edge-stitches as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left on the row, knit 1, slip 1 stitch purl-wise with the strand in front of the piece, knit 1. Work in the same way from both the right and wrong side. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. The diagrams show the pattern from the right side. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- NECK-WARMER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The piece is started back and forth, casting on stitches at the back of the neck and working the back piece top down, while increasing stitches on each side for the shoulders, which become slightly diagonal. The back piece is worked to the given length. The front piece is then worked in 2 sections, knitting up stitches along 1 back shoulder, working stockinette stitch and increasing for the neckline. This is repeated on the other shoulder. The 2 front sections are joined when the neckline is finished and worked to the given length. When the front piece is finished, the hood is worked, beginning with the neck in rib worked in the round, then the hood is finished back and forth. The top of the hood is sewn together. BACK PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth. Cast on 14-16-18 stitches with circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75 and 2 strands DROPS Melody. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl. ROW 2 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3. ROW 3 (wrong side): Read INCREASE TIP-2. Purl 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, purl until there are 3 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, purl 3. Work ROWS 2 and 3 a total of 7-7-7 times (14-14-14 rows worked) = 42-44-46 stitches. Remember to maintain the knitting gauge. Continue with stockinette stitches and 3 EDGE STITCHES I-CORD on each side – read explanation above, until the piece measures 28-30-32 cm = 11"-11¾"-12½" from the cast-on edge. Change to circular needle size 6 MM = US 10. Work the 3 edge-stitches as before, then stockinette stitch while increasing 6-4-6 stitches evenly across the next 36-38-40 stitches, work 3 edge-stitches as before = 48-48-52 stitches. From the wrong side, work rib as follows: 3 edge-stitches as before, rib (purl 2, knit 2) until there are 5 stitches left, purl 2 and 3 edge-stitches as before. Continue this rib for 4-4-4 cm = 1½"-1½"-1½". Bind off with knit above knit and purl above purl. The piece measures approx. 32-34-36 from the cast-on edge. LEFT FRONT SHOULDER: Find the left back shoulder as follows: Lay the back piece flat, right side up, with the stitch holder/thread towards you; left side of piece = left shoulder. Using circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75, start from the right side by the neck on the left back shoulder and knit up 1 stitch in each row worked as far as the shoulder, inside the outermost stitch = 14-14-14 stitches. All length-measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row Work stockinette stitch back and forth with 3 edge-stitches I-cord by the shoulder (first row is from the wrong side). When the piece measures 5-4-5 cm = 2"-1½"-2", increase for the neckline as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Remember INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 3, increase 1 stitch towards the left, work to end of row. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl, with edge-stitches worked as before. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 4-5-5 times (8-10-10 rows worked) = 18-19-19 stitches (with the next row from the right side). Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder/thread. Work the right front shoulder as follows: RIGHT FRONT SHOULDER: Use circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75. On the right back shoulder and starting from the right side by the shoulder, knit up 1 stitch in each row worked as far as the neck, inside the outermost stitch = 14-14-14 stitches. All length-measurements on the front piece are taken from this knitted-up row Work stockinette stitch back and forth with 3 edge-stitches I-cord by the shoulder (first row is from the wrong side). When the piece measures 5-4-5 cm = 2"-1½"-2", increase for the neckline as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Work until there are 3 stitches left on the row increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 3 – remember INCREASE TIP-1. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl, with edge-stitches worked as before. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 4-5-5 times (8-10-10 rows worked) = 18-19-19 stitches (with the next row from the right side). Now join the 2 front shoulders for the front piece. FRONT PIECE: Work as follows from the right side: Work across the 18-19-19 stitches on the right front shoulder as before, cast on 6-6-8 stitches for the neckline, work across the 18-19-19 stitches on the left front shoulder as before = 42-44-46 stitches. Continue with stockinette stitches and 3 edge-stitches I-cord on each side until the piece measures 28-30-32 cm = 11"-11¾"-12½" from the knitted-up row, finishing after a row from the wrong side. 32-34-36 cm = 12½"-13⅜"-14¼" measured from by the neck. NECK: Use circular needle size 6 MM = US 10 and 2 strands DROPS Melody. Start from the right side on one shoulder-line and knit up 56-60-64 stitches around the neckline, inside 1 stitch. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2), making sure you have 2 purled stitches mid-front. Insert a marker between these 2 stitches. Work until the rib measures 7-8-9 cm = 2¾"-3⅛"-3½". Do not cut the strand, the hood is continued from here. HOOD: Change to circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75. Work stockinette stitch at the same time as increasing 1 stitch between each pair of purled stitches (increase by picking up the strand between the 2 stitches and knitting through the back loop), work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker mid-front, bind off 6 stitches with knit (2 knitted, 2 purled and 2 knitted), continue with stockinette stitch, increasing in the purled sections as before to the end of the round = 63-68-73 stitches. Cut the strand. The hood is measured from here, working back and forth from the bind-off stitches mid-front. Insert 1 marker in the middle of the row (in sizes S/M and L/XL this is the mid-stitch, in size M/L this is between 2 stitches = mid-back). Allow the marker to follow your work onwards, it is used when increasing/decreasing mid-back. Now decrease each side, for the face opening and increase mid-back as follows, starting mid-front: ROW 1 (right side): Work A.1, knit 1, slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, knit until there are 3 stitches left before the marker, increase 1 stitch towards the left – remember INCREASE TIP-1, knit to 3 stitches past the marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit until there are 5 stitches left, knit 2 together, knit 1, work A.2 (2 increased stitches and 2 decreased stitches, so the stitch count remains the same). ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 3 times (6 rows worked). The decreases are finished but continue increasing mid-back as follows: ROW 3 (right side): Work A.1, knit until there are 3 stitches left before the marker, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit to 3 stitches past the marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit until there are 2 stitches left, work A.2 (2 increased stitches). ROW 4 (wrong side): Purl. Work ROWS 3 and 4 a total of 2 times (4 rows worked) = 67-72-77 stitches. The increases mid-back are finished. Continue with stockinette stitch and A.1 and A.2 each side until the hood measures 21-22-23 cm = 8¼"-8¾"-9" from the division mid-front (8 cm = 3⅛" left to finished length). Now decrease mid-back as follows: ROW 5 (right side): Work A.1, knit until there are 4 stitches left before the marker, knit 2 together, knit to 2 stitches past the marker, slip 1 stitch purl-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, knit until there are 2 stitches left, work A.2 (2 stitches decreased). ROW 6 (wrong side): Purl. Work ROWS 5 and 6 a total of 6 times (12 rows worked) = 55-60-65 stitches. Bind off with knit on the next row from the right side. The hood measures approx. 29-30-31 cm = 11⅜"-11¾"-12¼" from the division mid-front and 36-38-40 cm = 14¼"-15"-15¾" including the neck. ASSEMBLY: The top of the hood is now sewn together. Fold the hood by the marker, with the 2 sides wrong side to wrong side. Use grafting stitches and sew inside the bind-off edge. |
