------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagram A.1. INCREASE TIP-1: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from RIGHT SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from RIGHT SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE TIP-2: INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT- from WRONG SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT – from WRONG SIDE: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. INCREASE TIP-3: Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over as shown in A.1. On the next round, work the yarn overs twisted as follows: BEFORE MARKER (yarn over twists to right): Slip the yarn over purl-wise onto the right needle, then replace it on the left needle by inserting the left needle through the back loop (yarn over is now the other way round). Knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. Then work the new stitch in stockinette stitch. AFTER MARKER (yarn over twists to left): Knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. Then work the new stitch in stockinette stitch. SLEEVE TIP: When knitting up stitches under the sleeve, you can get a small hole in the transition between stitches on the body and sleeve. This hole can be closed by picking up the strand between 2 stitches and working this strand twisted together with the first stitch between body and sleeve. DECREASE TIP: Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker-thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker-thread sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- SWEATER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE. The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. If there is a «0» in your chosen size, skip the information and go straight to the next instruction. Work according to points 1 – 5. 1. BACK PIECE: Cast on stitches for the back of the neck. Work the back piece back and forth, top down, increasing stitches on each side until the shoulder stitch-count has been achieved. The back piece has slightly diagonal shoulders. 2. FRONT PIECE: Worked in 2 sections (each side of neck). Start by knitting up stitches along one back shoulder, working downwards and increasing for the neckline. Repeat on the other shoulder. Then cast on stitches for the neckline, joining the 2 front pieces and continuing back and forth to the correct length. 3. YOKE: Place all the stitches on the same circular needle, work first the front piece, knit up stitches for one sleeve along the side of the front piece, work the back piece, knit up stitches for the second sleeve along the other side of the front piece. The yoke is continued in the round. 4. INCREASE FOR BODY AND SLEEVES: While continuing the yoke, stitches are increased, first for the sleeves and later for both the body and sleeves. 5. BODY AND SLEEVES: When the increases and the yoke are finished, the yoke is divided for the body and sleeves. The body is finished in the round while the sleeves wait. Then the sleeves are worked in the round, top down. Stitches are knitted up around the neckline and the neck is worked in the round to finish. BACK PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth. Cast on 32-30-32-34-32-34-36 stitches with circular needle size 5 MM = US 8 and DROPS Big Merino. ROW 1 (wrong side): Purl. ROW 2 (right side): Read INCREASE TIP-1. Knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit until there are 2 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 2. ROW 3 (wrong side): Read INCREASE TIP-2. Purl 2, increase 1 stitch towards the right, purl until there are 2 stitches left on the row, increase 1 stitch towards the left, purl 2. AFTER ROW 3: Work ROWS 2 and 3 a total of 8-9-9-9-10-10-10 times (16-18-18-18-20-20-20 rows worked). After the last increase there are 64-66-68-70-72-74-76 stitches. Remember to maintain the knitting gauge. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. LEFT SHOULDER: Find the left back shoulder as follows: Lay the back piece flat, right side up, with the stitch holder/thread towards you; left side of piece = left shoulder. Start from the right side by the neck on the left back shoulder and knit up 1 stitch in each row worked, inside the outermost stitch as far as the armhole (16-18-18-28-20-20-20 stitches), finish by knitting up 1 stitch outermost on the shoulder (edge stitch) = 17-19-19-19-21-21-21 shoulder-stitches. Insert 1 marker by the neck. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this marker, measured in the knitting direction. Work stockinette stitch, with the first row from the wrong side. When the piece measures 5-6-6-7-7-8-9 cm = 2"-2⅜"-2⅜"-2¾"-2¾"-3⅛"-3½", increase for the neckline as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit 2, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit to end of row (1 increased stitch). ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 6 times (12 rows worked) = 23-25-25-25-27-27-27 stitches. The increases for the neckline are finished. The piece measures approx. 10-11-11-12-12-13-14 cm = 4"-4⅜"-4⅜"-4¾"-4¾"-5⅛"-5½" from the marker. Approx. 2-2-2-3-2-3-3 cm = ¾"-¾"-¾"-1⅛"-¾"-1⅛"-1⅛" of the neckline-depth will lie on the back piece. Cut the strand and place the stitches on a stitch holder. Work the right front piece along the right back shoulder as follows. RIGHT SHOULDER: Start from the right side by the armhole on the right back shoulder and knit up 1 stitch outermost on the shoulder (edge stitch), then 1 stitch in each row worked, inside the outermost stitch as far as the neck (16-18-18-28-20-20-20 stitches) = 17-19-19-19-21-21-21 shoulder-stitches. Insert 1 marker by the neck. All measurements on the front piece are taken from this marker, measured in the knitting direction. Work stockinette stitch, with the first row from the wrong side. When the piece measures 5-6-6-7-7-8-9 cm = 2"-2⅜"-2⅜"-2¾"-2¾"-3⅛"-3½", increase for the neckline as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Knit until there are 2 stitches left, increase 1 stitch towards the right, knit 2. ROW 2 (wrong side): Purl. Work ROWS 1 and 2 a total of 6 times (12 rows worked) = 23-25-25-25-27-27-27 stitches. FRONT PIECE: On the next row (right side) join the front shoulders as follows: Knit the 23-25-25-25-27-27-27 stitches on the right shoulder, cast on 18-16-18-20-18-20-22 stitches for the neckline mid-front, knit the 23-25-25-25-27-27-27 stitches on the left shoulder = 64-66-68-70-72-74-76 stitches. Work stockinette stitch back and forth until the piece measures 11-12-12-13-13-14-15 cm = 4⅜"-4¾"-4¾"-5⅛"-5⅛"-5½"-6" from the marker, with the last row from the wrong side. Now join the front and back pieces and knit up stitches for the sleeves. ROW 1 (right side): Knit together the first 2 stitches on the front piece (1 stitch decreased), insert 1 marker in this knitted-together stitch, knit until there are 2 stitches left on the front piece, slip 1 stitch, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over (1 stitch decreased), insert 1 marker in this stitch, knit up 18-20-20-22-22-24-26 stitches along the left-hand side of the front piece (= sleeve-stitches, knitted up inside the outermost stitch), knit together the first 2 stitches on the back piece (= 1 stitch decreased), insert 1 marker in this knitted-together stitch, knit until there are 2 stitches left on the back piece, slip 1 stitch, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over (1 stitch decreased), insert 1 marker in this last stitch, knit up 18-20-20-22-22-24-26 stitches along the right-hand side of the front piece (= sleeve-stitches, knitted up inside the outermost stitch) = 160-168-172-180-184-192-200 stitches. YOKE: Continue in the round and increase for the sleeves as follows:. ROUND 1: Knit and increase 1 stitch on each side of the sleeves (inside the sleeve-markers) – remember INCREASE TIP-1. Increase, towards the left at the beginning of the sleeve and towards the right at the end of the sleeve. The stitch count on the sleeve increases but it remains the same on the front and back pieces. Work this round 3-3-3-3-3-3-1 times: 24-26-26-28-28-30-28 stitches on each sleeve and 62-64-66-68-70-72-74 stitches on the front and back pieces = 172-180-184-192-196-204-204 stitches. Continue increasing every 2nd round as follows: ROUND 1: Knit and increase 1 stitch on each side of the sleeves as before. The stitch count on the sleeve increases but it remains the same on the front and back pieces. ROUND 2: Knit without increasing. Work ROUNDS 1 and 2, 4-4-3-2-2-1-1 times (8-8-6-4-4-2-2 rounds worked). A total of 7-7-6-5-5-4-2 increases in height on the sleeves: 32-34-32-32-32-32-30 stitches on each sleeve and 62-64-66-68-70-72-74 stitches on the front and back pieces = 188-196-196-200-204-208-208 stitches. Now increase on both the body and sleeves according to the diagram, increasing on each side of the marker-stitches so there is 1 stitch between the increases on the body and sleeves. So the cables are symmetrical, the round begins when there are 2 stitches left before the marker-stitch. Work as follows: ROUND 1: Start the round when there are still 2 stitches left on the sleeve (2 stitches before the marker-stitch), work A.1, knit until there are 3 stitches left on the front piece (2 stitches before the marker-stitch), work A.1, knit until there are 2 stitches left on the sleeve (2 stitches before the marker-stitch), work A.1, knit until there are 3 stitches left on the back piece (2 stitches before the marker-stitch), work A.1, knit to end of round (8 increased stitches). ROUND 2: Knit without increasing. ROUND 3: Start the round when there are still 3 stitches left on the sleeve (3 stitches before the marker-stitch), work A.1, knit until there are 4 stitches left on the front piece (3 stitches before the marker-stitch), work A.1, knit until there are 3 stitches left on the sleeve (3 stitches before the marker-stitch), work A.1, knit until there are 4 stitches left on the back piece (3 stitches before the marker-stitch), work A.1, knit to end of round (8 increased stitches). ROUND 4: Knit without increasing. Work ROUNDS 1 to 4, 4-5-6-7-8-9-10 times (16-20-24-28-32-36-40 rounds worked and A.1 worked 4-5-6-7-8-9-10 times in height). A total of 15-17-18-19-21-22-22 increases in height on the sleeves and 8-10-12-14-16-18-20 increases in height on the body: 48-54-56-60-64-68-70 stitches on each sleeve and 78-84-90-96-102-108-114 stitches on the front and back pieces = 252-276-292-312-332-352-368 stitches. The sleeves measure approx. 12-14-15-16-18-19-20 cm = 4¾"-5½"-6"-6¼"-7"-7½"-8". When the sweater is folded double at the shoulder, the piece should measures approx. 18-20-21-23-25-26-28 cm = 7"-8"-8¼"-9"-9¾"-10¼"-11" from outermost on the shoulder and down the armhole. If the piece is shorter than this, continue working without further increases to the correct length. Now divide for the body and sleeves. DIVIDE FOR BODY AND SLEEVES Work to the first marker-stitch and continue as follows: Knit the first 78-84-90-96-102-108-114 stitches (= front piece), place the next 48-54-56-60-64-68-70 stitches on a stitch holder for the sleeve, cast on 6-6-8-8-10-12-14 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), knit the next 78-84-90-96-102-108-114 stitches (back piece), place the next 48-54-56-60-64-68-70 stitches on a thread for the sleeve, cast on 6-6-8-8-10-12-14 stitches (mid-under the sleeve). The body and sleeves are finished separately. BODY: = 168-180-196-208-224-240-256 stitches. Work stockinette stitch in the round until the piece measures 44-46-48-49-51-52-54 cm = 17¼"-18"-19"-19¼"-20"-20½"-21¼" from the cast-on edge mid-back. Change to circular needle size 3 MM = US 2.5. Work rib (knit 1, purl 1), AT THE SAME TIME increase 38-42-48-48-54-58-60 stitches evenly on the first round = 206-222-244-256-278-298-316 stitches. When the rib measures 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 cm = 1½"-1½"-1½"-1½"-2"-2"-2", bind off with rib. The sweater measures approx. 48-50-52-53-56-57-59 cm = 19"-19¾"-20½"-21"-22"-22½"-23¼" from mid-back and 50-52-54-56-58-60-62 cm = 19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜" from the shoulder. SLEEVES: Place the 48-54-56-60-64-68-70 sleeve-stitches from one stitch holder onto circular needle size 5 MM = US 8 and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 6-6-8-8-10-12-14 cast-on stitches under the sleeve – read SLEEVE TIP = 54-60-64-68-74-80-84 stitches. Insert a marker-thread in the middle of the 6-6-8-8-10-12-14 new stitches under the sleeve. The round starts by the marker-thread. Work stockinette stitch in the round. AT THE SAME TIME, when the sleeve measures 1 cm = ⅜" from the division, decrease mid-under the sleeve – read DECREASE TIP as follows: Decrease 2 stitches 3-5-6-8-10-12-13 times every 10-8-6-4½-3-2½-2 cm = 4"-3⅛"-2⅜"-1⅝"-1⅛"-1"-¾" = 48-50-52-52-54-56-58 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 38-37-37-36-34-33-32 cm = 15"-14½"-14½"-14¼"-13⅜"-13"-12½" from the division. Change to double pointed needles size 3 MM = US 2.5. Work rib (knit 1, purl 1), AT THE SAME TIME increase 10-10-12-12-12-12-12 stitches evenly on the first round = 58-60-64-64-66-68-70 stitches. When the rib measures 4-4-4-4-5-5-5 cm = 1½"-1½"-1½"-1½"-2"-2"-2", bind off with rib. The sleeve measures approx. 42-41-41-40-39-38-37 cm = 16½"-16⅛"-16⅛"-15¾"-15¼"-15"-14½" from the division. NECK: Use circular needle size 3 MM = US 2.5. Start from the right side on one shoulder-line and knit up 92-88-94-100-98-102-108 stitches inside 1 stitch. Knit 1 round and adjust the stitch count if necessary – it should be divisible by 2. Work rib in the round (knit 1, purl 1) for 3-3-3½-3½-3½-4-4 cm = 1⅛"-1⅛"-1¼"-1¼"-1¼"-1½"-1½". Change to circular needle size 5 MM = US 8 and bind off with rib. |
