Hallo liebes Drops Team.

Hello! I'm working on the Snuggle Berry dog sweater in size large and I have a few questions about these instructions: "Cast off 5 stitches 1 time, 1 stitch 2-2-3-3 times in total." Do I cast off right away, starting at the beginning of the row? And then '1 stitch 3 times in total'- what does this mean? Any information would be much appreciated, thank you!

Hi Jen, You cast off equal numbers of stitches on both sides (beginning and end of the row) every 2nd row: First 5 stitches each side, work back, cast off 1 stitch each side, work back, then repeat this 2 more times. A total of 16 stitches cast off (8 on each side). Regards, Drops team.

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- INCREASE TIP: All increases are done from the right side. Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over. On next row work yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Work the new stitches in stockinette stitch on top part of back and in rib on bottom part of belly. GARTER STITCH (back and forth): Knit all rows. KNITTING TIP-1: When working short rows there will be a small hole when turning the piece - the hole can be closed by tightening the yarn or using the technique German Short Rows as follows: Slip first stitch purlwise. Place strand over right needle and tighten well at the back (should lead to two loops on needle). Work these loops together on next row. KNITTING TIP-2: When picking up stitches for front legs, there will be small hole in the transition between stitches on front legs and the sweater. The holes can be closed by picking up the strand between two stitches - work this strand twisted together with next stitch to close the hole. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- SWEATER FOR DOG - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Piece is knitted from the tail towards the neck. First work the back back and forth, then work the belly back and forth. Put the pieces together and work the neck in the round. Sew back and belly together and work the front legs. BACK: Cast on 13-17-17-21 stitches on pointed needles size 7 MM = US 10.75 with DROPS Snow. Work rib as follows (first row is worked from wrong side): Work rib (= purl 1, knit 1) until 1 stitch remains and purl 1. Work knit over knit and purl over purl until 3 rows have been worked in total. Work next row as follows (from right side): Knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, work in stockinette stitch while at the same time increasing 6 stitches evenly over the next 9-13-13-17 stitches - read INCREASE TIP, 4 stitches remain, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1 and knit 1 = 19-23-23-27 stitches. Continue in stockinette stitch over the middle stitches and 4 stitches rib in each side - AT THE SAME TIME on next row from right side increase 1 stitch in each side inside 4 stitches in rib - remember INCREASE TIP. Increase like this every other row 7-7-8-8 times in total = 33-37-39-43 stitches. When piece measures 12-12-14-14 cm = 4¾"-4¾"-5½"-5½" cast on 1 new stitch in each side, work the new stitches in GARTER STITCH - read explanation above on 35-39-41-45 stitches. Sew back and belly together later in these garter stitches. Work until piece measures 27-31-35-41 cm = 10⅝"-12¼"-13¾"-16⅛", piece measures 15-19-21-27 cm = 6"-7½"-8¼"-10⅝" from where 1 stitch in garter stitch were cast on in each side (= fasten belly to back here later). Now work in stockinette stitch while at the same time binding off stitches for front legs in each side on every other row as follows: Bind off 5 stitches 1 time, 1 stitch 2-2-3-3 times in total. Work 1 row without bind-off. Then work 2 rows while casting on 2 new stitches in each side (opening for front legs = approx. 6-6-7-7 cm = 2⅜"-2⅜"-2¾"-2¾", opening for front legs is shorter on the back than on the belly) = 25-29-29-33 stitches, piece measures approx. 33-37-42-48 cm = 13"-14½"-16½"-19". Slip stitches on a thread or a stitch holder and put piece aside. BELLY: Cast on 9-9-17-17 stitches on double pointed needles size 6 MM = US 10 with DROPS Snow. Work first row as follows from wrong side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, work rib (= purl 1/knit 1) until 2 stitches remain, purl 1 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Work rib back and forth until piece measures 15-19-21-27 cm = 6"-7½"-8¼"-10⅝", insert a marker in each side, markers show where holes for front legs begin and should be used when belly and back are sewn together later. Then work as before until piece measures approx. 20½-24½-28½-35½ cm = 8⅛"-9⅝"-11⅛"-13⅞". On first row from right side increase 1 stitch inside 1 edge stitch in garter stitch in each side – remember INCREASE TIP - work the increased stitches in rib. Increase like this every other row 2 times in total = 13-13-21-21 stitches. Belly measures approx. 23-27-31-38 cm = 9"-10⅝"-12¼"-15" (opening for front legs = approx. 8-8-10-11 cm = 3⅛"-3⅛"-4"-4⅜", opening for front legs is longer on the belly than on the back to give a better shape). NECK: Now slip stitches from belly and back together, distribute stitches on double pointed needles size 6 MM = US 10 as follows: Slip the 13-13-21-21 belly stitches on first needle (1st needle), distribute 25-29-29-33 back stitches evenly on the other three needles = 38-42-50-54 stitches in total. Begin to work on the belly: Work 1 stitch in stockinette stitch, rib as before over the next 11-11-19-19 stitches, 1 stitch in stockinette stitch (1st needle), work in stockinette stitch and decrease 1-1-5-5 stitches evenly over stitches on the back = 37-41-45-49 stitches. Now work a small neck elevation with short rows - read KNITTING TIP-1 in explanation above, and work as follows: * Work the 13-13-21-21 stitches on 1st needle as before, turn piece. Work back as before, turn piece, Work 1 round rib (= purl 1/knit 1) over all stitches*. Work from *-* 2-2-3-4 times in total. Insert a marker to measure from. Work rib over all stitches until piece measures 5-7-8-10 cm = 2"-2¾"-3⅛"-4" from marker. Loosely bind off. ASSEMBLY: Sew the back and belly together in each side on sweater. Begin to sew where 1 stitch in garter stitch were cast on in each side on back, and sew inside 1 stitch in garter stitch along the side of belly up to markers inserted in each side on belly. The remaining cm on back and belly are used to pick up stitches for front legs. FRONT LEGS: Use double pointed needles size 6 MM = US 10 and pick up approx. 22 to 30 stitches (number and stitches must be divisible 2) around the opening for the front leg - read KNITTING TIP-2. Work rib (= purl 1/knit 1) for approx. 5-6-7-8 cm = 2"-2⅜"-2¾"-3⅛". Loosely bind off. |
