How to knit a rib (K1, P1)

In this DROPS video we show how you can knit a rib in knit 1, purl 1 (K1, P1) Knitting a rib gives an elastic piece that is great for cuffs and edges. It’s important that all knitted stitches comes above knitted stitches, and all purled stitches come above the purled stitches. 1st row (RS): K1, P1, continue like this until end of row, turn. 2nd row (WS): P1 above P1, K1 above K1. To get this nice looking twisted slip st along the edge, on every row you slip the 1st stitch as if you would knit it, and you purl the last st on every row. How to knit from the center and out

In this DROPS video we show how you can knit from the center of the piece and out. Here we use DROPS 146-2 as an example, but several of our most popular patterns starts in the center of the piece with a few stitches and double pointed needles. It's a bit tricky to get started but gets easier and easier as you increase. Make sure to use markers to show where the increases are made. Keep increasing and work your way out. As the piece grows you continue with a longer and longer circular needle to fit all stitches. You must read the pattern and look at the chart to be able to follow. How to have enough thread when you cast on

In this DROPS video we show an easy way to find out how to have enough thread when you cast up (continental method). Wrap the thread as many times around the knitting needle as many stitch number your work need. Have approx. 10 cm thread end at the beginning to hold on (we also tie a knot to mark exactly how much thread it is left when you finish cast on). In the video we wrap around/cast on 16 stitches with DROPS Snow from Garnstudio, then 40 stitches with a thinner thread, DROPS Cotton Merino from Garnstudio.

How to cast on with two needles

Italian cast-on, when working rib with knit 1, purl 1

In this DROPS video we show you how work an Italian cast-on, with knit 1, purl 1. Start with a long strand-end, depending on how many stitches you are casting on. 1. Hold the strand over your thumb and left index finger and insert the needle under this strand. Pull the needle and the strand a little outwards, take the needle towards you and under the strand by your thumb, then up between the strands, around the back strand and under the front strand, then up = 1 start-loop and 1 knitted stitch on the right needle, i.e., 1st stitch = knitted stitch. 2. Take the needle away from you so it is above the strand by your index finger, then under both strands, take the needle away from you and under the back strand then up = 2nd stitch = 1 purled stitch. 3. Take the needle towards you and under the front strand, up between the strands, around and under the back strand, then under the front strand and up = 3rd stitch = 1 knitted stitch. Repeat points 2 and 3, with purled and knitted stitches, to the correct stitch count. Finish the last stitch with a loop to «fasten» the stitches. Turn and knit the knitted stitches and purl the purled stitches. The last stitch on the row is purled together with the start-strand/loop. Turn again and knit the knitted stitches and purl the purled stitches. You can also, after casting on, work 2 or 4 rows of double knit to give the edge hold. Read the explanation below and/or see the end of the video (from time: 00:04:03). Both methods give a very elastic edge. For the 2 or 4 rows of double knit to give the edge hold, follow the text in the pattern you are working from, or work as follows: ROW 1: * Knit 1, slip the next stitch onto the right needle purlwise, with the yarn in front of the stitch *, work from *-* to the last stitch and the start-loop remains, purl these stitches together. ROW 2: * Slip the first/next stitch onto the right needle knitwise with the yarn behind the stitch, purl 1 *, work from *-* to the end of the row.

In this DROPS video we show one way of Italian cast on with a stable edge, with 1 knit and 1 purl stitch. Start with a long thread end, the length depends on how many stitches are to be cast on. Hold the thread over the thumb and left index finger, insert the needle on the inside and from the back so that there is a cross = 1st stitch (K). Take the needle over the back thread, up in the middle, under the front thread and up = 2nd stich (P). Next stitch: Insert needle under first thread and up in the middle, over back thread and up (K). Continue like this with P and K to desired number of stitches, finish with a P stitch. Turn the piece and twist the threads twice. Start 2nd row with K1, place the yarn in front of the needle and slip the P stitch over to the right needle as if to purl, K the next stitch. Place the yarn in front of the needle and slip the P stitch over to the right needle as if to purl, K the next stitch, continue like this the entire row, but P the last stitch, turn. K 1, place the yarn in front of the needle and slip the P stitch over to the right needle as if to purl, K the next stitch. Place the yarn in front of the needle and slip the P stitch over to the right needle as if to purl, K the next stitch, continue like this the entire row, but P the last stitch, turn. Continue with K over K and P over P. This method gives an elastic and nice result and a stable edge. We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video.

In this DROPS video we show one way of Italian cast on, with knit 2, purl 2 ribbing. Start with a long thread end, the length depends on how many stitches are to be cast on. Hold the thread over the thumb and left index finger, insert the needle on the inside and from the back so that there is a cross = 1st stitch (= K). Take the needle over the back thread, up in the middle, under the front thread and up = 2nd stich (P). Next stitch: Insert needle under first thread and up in the middle, over back thread and up (2nd K stitch). Continue like this with P and K to desired number of stitches, but should be able to divisible by 4 (+ 2 if required). Turn the piece and twist the threads twice. Work K over K and P over P, turn. Now start working the rib into K2, P2 as follows: * knit 1, slip the next 2 stitches to the right needle as to knit them together, then put them back on the left needle slipping the purl stitch first then the knit stitch (so that they are now “reversed), knit the next stitch, and purl the next 2 stitches *, and repeat from *-* to the end of the row. The method gives a very elastic result. We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video.

How to make a tubular cast on

In this DROPS video we show how you make a tubular cast on. Makes flexible and elastic edges perfect for the edge on a ribbed top down sock, ribbed cuff edges etc. The white thread we use are waste yarn that we pull out later. After casting on, the sts with the white thread around are P sts. Knit the K sts, and lift the P sts with yarn in front of work. After 4 rows (more if thinner yarn) you pull out the waste yarn and continue in rib, now working both K and P sts.

How to make a tubular cast on with waste yarn

In this DROPS video we show how you make a tubular cast on using waste yarn. This makes flexible and elastic edges, which is perfect for the edge on a ribbed top down sock, ribbed cuff edges etc. Cast on half the number of sts the pattern call for and work a couple of rows with waste yarn, ending with a RS row. Change to working yarn and work stockinette starting on a WS row. Work a minimum of 4 rows, if thinner yarn work 6 or 8 rows, end with a RS row. Next row: P1, pick up the yarn in first st below on left needle and K the stitch, P1, repeat pick up and K, continue until end of row. Now cut and remove waste yarn. Continue in rib K1, P1.

How to cast on from provisional chain

In this DROPS video we show how to cast on stitches from a provisional chain. This method of crochet chains at the bottom of your work let you create live loops that can be picked up afterward and be worked down, e.g. cuffs, lace borders etc. Use a crochet hook and crochet sts upon a needle. Start with a slip knot. After required sts are on the needle, don't pass the last loop onto the needle but chain a couple of extra sts and then pull loop a bit long through last stitch. This is the thread you will pull later to unzip the crochet sts. You must read the pattern to be able to follow. In this DROPS video we show how to cast on from a chain row. By having a chain row at the bottom of your work you can create live loops that can be picked up afterward and be worked down, e.g. cuffs, lace borders etc. Chain the number of sts needed and add a few extra. Turn the chain row so that you have the back side with the bumps up. Pick up sts with your working yarn through each bump. Afterward you can easily pull out the chains to unzip the sts and put them back on needle. You must read the pattern to be able to follow. How to make a provisional cast on with waste yarn or circular needle

In this DROPS video we show two ways to make a provisional cast on where you afterward will have live sts to work the opposite way. First we are casting on using a waste yarn, then we are casting on around the cable of a circular needle. How to make an invisible cast on

In this DROPS video we show how to make an invisible cast on. This cast on method is great for toe up socks, mittens, and other projects worked in the round where you don't want an uneven and bulky seam. Cast on sts on two double pointed needles and work one needle at the time in the round. After cast on and one row on each needle (i.e. 1 round) start inc 1 st each side of both needles on every other round to as many needed for width of foot.
