Gauge: 23 sts x 30 rows on larger needles in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"].

Buttonholes: When the work measures 2 cm [0.75"], 8.5 (7.5-8) cm [3-3/8" (3" - 3-1/8")], 15 (13.5-13.5) cm [5-7/8" (5.25" - 5.25")], 22 (19-19.5) cm [8-5/8" (7.5" - 7-5/8")], 28.5 (24.5-25.5) cm [11.25" (9-5/8" - 10")], 35 (30.5-31) cm [13.75" (12" - 12.25")] and - (36-37) cm [ - (14-1/8" - 14.5")] make buttonholes on the right front as follows: bind off the 3rd and 4th sts and cast on 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row.

Lace pattern (on 7 cast-on sts):
1st row: K 3, yo, K 2 tog, yo twice, K 2.
2nd row: K 3, P 1 into the 2nd yo from the previous row, K 2, yo, K 2 tog into back of st, K 1 into back of st.
3rd row: K 3, yo, K 2 tog into back of st, K 4.
4th row: bind off 2 sts, K 4, yo, K 2 tog into back of st, K 1 into back of st.
Repeat these 4 rows

Rib: * K 2, P 2 *. Repeat from *-*.

Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows.
Garter st, when knitting in the round: *Rnd 1, knit. Rnd 2, purl.* Repeat from * - *.

Body: Cast on 276 (288-300) sts on larger needles and knit in rib pattern, keeping the edge st at each side in garter st throughout. Make buttonholes on the right front (see instructions above). Knit until the work measures 15 (15-17) cm [5-7/8" (5-7/8" - 6.75")].

Read the entire next section before continuing:
When the work measures 15 (15-17) cm [5-7/8" (5-7/8" - 6.75")] knit the next row as follows: 1 edge st, 22 sts rib, place a marker, 10 sts rib (P 2, K 2, P 2, K 2, P 2), place a marker, knit rib until 33 sts remain, place a marker, knit 10 sts (P 2, K 2, P 2, K 2, P 2), place a marker, 22 sts rib, 1 edge st.
Make increases and decreases in the 10 rib sts between the markers every 4th row as follows: inc 1 st at the side toward the center front, dec 1 st at the side which is toward the armhole. Knit the increased sts into the rib as you go along.
Increase as follows: Knit or purl 1 st more in the first st of rib, depending upon what is appropriate for the rib.
Decrease as follows: K 2 tog or P 2 tog, depending upon what is appropriate for the rib.
The 10 sts will shift themselves toward the side, away from the center front. New vertical ribs will be created.

Continue to shift the 10 sts every 4th row until the 10 sts have come to the cardigan's side - end on a row where the ribbing works out evenly.
At the same time, when the work measures 34 (35-37) cm [13-3/8" (13.75" - 14.5")] (NOTE: for Size XL you will begin neck shaping on the same row -- see instructions below), knit the next row as follows: 70 (73-76) sts for the front, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 128 (134-140) sts for the back, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 70 (73-76) sts for the front. Knit the rest of each part separately.

Front: = 70 (73-76) sts. Bind off for armholes every other row: 3 sts 2 (2-3) times, 2 sts 4 (5-5) times, 1 st 4 (3-3) times = 52 (54-54) sts. At the same time, when the work measures 35 (36-37) cm [13.75" (14-1/8" -14.5")], shape the neck: dec 1 st inside the 7 sts at the center front edge (1 edge st + 6 sts button band) every other row 14 times, then every 4th row 2 (3-3) times. When the work measures 56 (58-60) cm [22" (22-7/8" - 23-5/8")] bind off the 28 (29-29) sts from the shoulder; 8 sts remain at the center front for the neck band. Knit the next row as follows: 1 st garter st, 6 sts rib, 1 st garter st, and continue the pattern until the neck edge measures 7.5 (8-8) cm [3" (3-1/8" - 3-1/8")]. Put sts on a st holder.

Back: = 128 (134-140) sts. Bind off for armholes as on the front = 92 (96-96) sts. When the work measures 54 (56-58) cm [21.25" (22" - 22-7/8")], bind off the center 30 (32-32) sts for the neck. Bind off 2 sts at each neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures 56 (58-60) cm [22" (22-7/8" - 23-5/8")].

Sleeves: Cast on 72 (76-80) sts on larger double pointed needles; join and place a marker at the join. Knit rib. Inc 1 st each side of marker every other row 11 (11-9) times = 94 (98-98) sts. Knit the increased sts into the rib as you go along.
When the work measures 9 (8-7) cm [3.5" (3-1/8" - 2.75")] bind off 2 sts each side of marker and knit the rest back and forth on the needles. Bind off for sleeve caps each side every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 5 (5-4) times, 1 st 12 (13-17) times, 2 sts 4 (4-3) times, 3 sts 1 time, bind off. The work measures approx. 24 cm [9.5"].

Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Weave the neck sts from the stitch holders together at the center back and sew the neckband to the back neck with the seam inward against the wrong side.
Knit borders for the button band and neck as follows:

Right button band border:
Cast on 7 sts on smaller needles. Knit lace pattern for approx. 65 (65-70) cm [25-5/8" (25-5/8" - 27-5/8")] (the border is to be sewed on in blocked condition). Bind off. Sew the straight edge of the border to the body in the last st of the button band (7th st from the center front edge), with the cast-on edge at the lower edge of the cardigan.

Left button band border: Cast on and knit like the right, but attach the cast-on edge at the center back.
You can alternatively knit the left and right button band borders in one piece; to do this, knit lace pattern for approx. 130 (130-140) cm [51-1/8" (51-1/8" - 55-1/8")].
Sew in the sleeves and buttons.
