GARTER ST (back and forth):
K all rows. 1 ridge = K2 rows.

See diagrams A.1 and A.2. Work entire pattern in stockinette st.

Dec 1 st by K 2 sts tog.

Work in one bottom up, but first work rib on hat separately. Wine bag is placed in from the bottom, and bottom is tightened tog with a string.

Worked in the round on circular needle with Nepal.
Cast on 96-104 sts on circular needle size 5 mm / US 8 with red. K 1 round. Then work rib (= K 2/P 2) until piece measures 4 cm / 1½'', K 1 row while dec 16 sts evenly = 80-88 sts. Place piece aside (slip sts on a stitch holder/needle).

Worked in the round on circular needle with Nepal, switch to double pointed needles when needed. Cast on 80-88 sts on circular needle size 5 mm / US 8 with off white. P 1 round. Work next round as follows: * K 2 tog, 1 YO *, repeat from *-* the entire round (on next round K YO to make holes). Then work in stockinette st until piece measures 9-10 cm / 4'' - REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE. Then work the head as follows: Work in GARTER ST back and forth - see explanation above - for 5 cm / 2''. Cut the yarn. Insert 1 marker after 40-44 sts, round on hat beg here. NOW MEASURE PIECE FROM HERE.

Worked in the round on circular needle size 5 mm / US 8 with red Nepal, switch to double pointed needles when needed. Edge on hat is now worked tog with head on next round as follows: Place edge around the piece RS against RS, and beg of round meet, K tog first st from edge and first st from head. Continue working 1 st from both pieces tog the entire round = 80-88 sts. Now work in stockinette st. When piece measures 10 cm / 4'', work A.1 over all sts (= 10-11 times in width). When A.1 has been worked 1 time vertically, work A.2 over all sts - AT THE SAME TIME dec 4 sts evenly on 2nd row in diagram - READ DECREASE TIP = 76-84 sts. Repeat A.2 8-9 times in total vertically - AT THE SAME TIME dec 8 sts evenly every time 2nd row in A.2 is repeated = 12 sts on needle after all dec. Then continue with red. Work 1 round while dec 4 sts evenly = 8 sts. Then K all sts tog 2 by 2 = 4 sts. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining sts, tighten tog and fasten. Piece measures approx. 44-48 cm / 17 1/4"-19".

Cut 2 lengths with off white in Nepal of 3 metres each. Twine the strands tog until they resist, fold the string double so that it twines again. Make a knot at each end. Thread tie up and down through the eyelet holes on the bottom.

Make a pompom in red Nepal 6 cm / 2 3/8'' in diameter and fasten it at the top of hat.

Fasten fringes in P sts on head.
1 fringe = cut 1 length of 60 cm / 23½'' with Eskimo. Place it double and thread loop through one of the P sts at the top of head at the front (i.e. in 1st row with P below edge on hat). Fasten as many fringes as you want depending on how wide or dense you want Santa’ beard to be (fasten in the bottom and in the 2 top P rows, there are 7 fringes in each side of opening with 1 P st between every fringe). Then fringe the beard by rubbing each yarn carefully with your fingers. Cut beard in desired length and shape.

All measurements in charts are in cm.

= off white
= red
