Bon tricot!

Hello! When I’m knitting the back piece, should I continue using garter stitch on the edges after I casted off 2 stitches for the armholes or should it be purl on the right side and knit on the back instead from that point?
29.03.2024 - 00:38DROPS Design answered:
Dear Tatiana, the edge stitch should be knitted as a garter stitch all through the piece. Happy Knitting!

Bon tricot!

I'm going to be making this from my own hand spun Leicester Longwool. Mine is a DK weight, but I'm not sure how many yards this pattern would take.
28.08.2023 - 22:33DROPS Design answered:
Dear Mrs Helffley, this pattern is worked with either 2 strands yarn group C (aran/worsted) or 1 strand yarn group E (super bulky), so that a dk yarn might not be suitable - it might be wiser to check similar pattern matching your tension. Happy knitting!

Bon tricot!

---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge vertically = knit 2 rows. DECREASE TIP (evenly): To calculate how to increase/decrease evenly, use the total number of stitches on needle (e.g. 82 stitches) and divide stitches by number of decreases to be done (e.g. 13) = 6,3. In this example decrease by working approx. every 5th and 6th stitch together. PATTERN: See diagram A.1. Diagrams show all rows in pattern seen from the right side. BUTTONHOLES: Decrease for buttonholes on right band. 1 BUTTONHOLE = knit third and fourth stitch from edge together and make 1 yarn over. On next row knit yarn over to make hole. Decrease for buttonholes when piece measures: S: 17, 25, 33, 41 and 49 cm M: 17, 25, 33, 42 and 51 cm L: 17, 26, 34, 44 and 53 cm XL: 18, 27, 35, 45 and 55 cm XXL: 18, 27, 34, 47 and 57 cm XXXL: 19, 29, 39, 49 and 59 cm CAST-OFF TIP: To avoid a tight cast-off edge when casting off, you may use a larger needle. If this still is too tight make 1 yarn over after approx. every 4th stitch while casting off (cast off yarn overs as stitches). ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- VEST – SHORT SUMMARY OF PIECE: Worked back and forth on circular needle in parts, and sewn together as explained in pattern. Then pick up a neck edge, and work edges around the armholes. BACK PIECE: Cast on 82-90-94-98-102-106 stitches on circular needle size 6 mm with 2 strands DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk or 1 strand DROPS Wish. Purl 1 row from wrong side, then work rib as follows from right side: 2 edge stitches in GARTER STITCH - read explanation above - * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until 4 stitches remain, knit 2 and finish with 2 edge stitches in garter stitch. Continue rib like this for 10 cm. Switch to circular needle size 8 mm, purl 1 row from wrong side while decreasing 13-17-17-17-17-17 stitches evenly - read DECREASE TIP = 69-73-77-81-85-89 stitches. Then work as follows from right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, purl 5-7-9-11-13-15, A.1 (= 15 stitches), purl 6, A.1, purl 6, A.1, purl 5-7-9-11-13-15, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue this pattern upwards (the purl stitches from right side, are knitted on the wrong side). REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When piece measures 34-35-36-37-38-39 cm, cast off 2 stitches for armholes at beginning of the 2 next rows = 65-69-73-77-81-85 stitches. When piece measures 53-55-57-59-61-63 cm, decrease 5 stitches evenly over middle repetition of A.1, on next row cast off the middle 14-16-18-20-22-24 stitches for neck, and finish each shoulder separately. Then cast off 1 stitch on next row from neck = 22-23-24-25-26-27 stitches. Work the stitches in A.1 in stocking stitch, decrease at the same time 5 stitches evenly over these stitches = 17-18-19-20-21-22 stitches. Cast off when piece measures 56-58-60-62-64-66 cm (= 22-23-24-25-26-27 cm from where armholes were cast off). Work the other shoulder the same way. LEFT FRONT PIECE: Cast on 45-45-49-49-53-53 stitches (including 5 band stitches towards mid front) on circular needle size 6 mm with 2 strands DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk or 1 strand DROPS Wish. Purl 1 row from wrong side, then work rib as follows from right side: 2 edge stitches in garter stitch, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until 7 stitches remain, knit 2 and 5 band stitches in garter stitch. Continue rib like this for 10 cm. Switch to circular needle size 8 mm, purl 1 row from wrong side while decreasing 9-7-9-7-9-7 stitches evenly = 36-38-40-42-44-46 stitches. Then work as follows from right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, purl 7-9-11-13-15-17, A.1, purl 8, 5 stitches in garter stitch. Continue pattern like this. When piece measures 34-35-36-37-38-39 cm, cast off 2 stitches for armhole at beginning of next row from right side = 34-36-38-40-42-44 stitches. Work as follows from right side: Purl 6-8-10-12-14-16, A.1, purl 8, 5 stitches in garter stitch. When piece measures 50-52-54-56-58-60 cm, slip the outermost 8-9-10-11-12-13 stitches towards mid front on a stitch holder for neck. Continue to cast off stitches for neck at beginning of every row from neck as follows: Cast off 2 stitches 1 time and 1 stitch 2 times = 22-23-24-25-26-27 stitches remain on shoulder. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Cast on 45-45-49-49-53-53 stitches (including 5 band stitches towards mid front) on circular needle size 6 mm with 2 strands DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk or 1 strand DROPS Wish. Purl 1 row from wrong side, then work rib as follows from right side and mid front: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until 4 stitches remain, knit 2 and 2 edge stitches in garter stitch. Continue rib like this for 10 cm. Switch to circular needle size 8 mm, purl 1 row from wrong side while decreasing 9-7-9-7-9-7 stitches evenly = 36-38-40-42-44-46 stitches. Then work as follows from right side: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, purl 8, A.1, purl 7-9-11-13-15-17, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue pattern like this. When piece measures 17-17-17-18-18-19 cm, decrease for BUTTONHOLES - read above! When piece measures 34-35-36-37-38-39 cm, cast off 2 stitches for armhole at beginning of next row from wrong side = 34-36-38-40-42-44 stitches. Work as follows from right side: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, purl 8, A.1, purl 6-8-10-12-14-16. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. Sew side seams in outer loops of edge stitch to get a flat seam but stop when approx. 10 cm remain = vents. Sew buttons on to left front piece. NECK EDGE: Begin mid front and from right side, and pick up approx. 48-68 stitches including stitches from stitch holder (number of stitches should be divisible by 4) around the neck on circular needle size 6 mm with 2 strands DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk or 1 strand DROPS Wish. Work rib as follows – first row is worked from wrong side: 5 band stitches in garter stitch, purl 2, rib (= knit 2, purl 2) until 7 stitches remain, purl 2 and 5 band stitches in garter stitch. Work rib for 12 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl - read CAST-OFF TIP. Fold rib at the top of neck down on inside of garment. Fasten the rib to get a double neck edge, and sew opening in each side towards mid front. To avoid a tight neck edge that sticks out it is important to keep the seam elastic. EDGE AROUND ARMHOLES: Pick up approx. 52 to 72 stitches (divisible by 4) around the armhole with 2 strands DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk or 1 strand DROPS Wish on a short circular needle size 6 mm. Work rib (= knit 2/purl 2) in the round for 4 cm. Then cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl - remember CAST-OFF TIP. Repeat around the other armhole. |
