------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (back and forth): Knit all rows, from both the right and wrong side. 1 ridge in height = knit 2 rows. GARTER STITCH (in the round): Alternately knit 1 round and purl 1 round. 1 ridge vertically = 2 rounds. I-CORD: BEGINNING OF ROW: Work I-cord as follows: Knit 2 twisted together, make 1 yarn over. END OF ROW: Work I-cord as follows: Work until there are 2 stitches left on the row, slip 2 stitches purl-wise with the strand in front. Work like this from both the right and wrong side. RAGLAN: Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over, which is knitted twisted on next row to avoid a hole. SLEEVE TIP: When knitting up stitches under the sleeve, you can be left with a small hole in the transition between the stitches on the body and sleeve. This hole can be closed by picking up the strand between 2 stitches and working this strand twisted together with the first stitch between body and sleeve. DECREASE TIP (applies to mid-under sleeve and inside leg): Decrease on a knitted round: Knit 1, slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, work until there are 3 stitches left, knit 2 together, knit 1 (2 stitches decreased). BUTTONHOLES: Work the buttonholes on the right band (when the garment is worn) from the right side, when there are 5 stitches left on the row as follows: ROW 1 (right side): Make 1 yarn over, knit 2 together, knit 1, slip 2 stitches purl-wise with the strand in front. ROW 2 (wrong side): Work the band as before, knitting the yarn over to leave a hole. The first buttonhole is worked on the first row from the right side after the neck is finished. Then work the other 6-6-7-7-7-7 buttonholes with 4-5-4½-5-5-5½ cm = 1½"-2"-1⅝"-2"-2"-2⅛" between each one. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- SUIT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The whole piece is worked in garter stitch, with 2 stitches I-cord on each side mid-front. The yoke is worked back and forth with circular needle, from mid front and top down, increasing for raglan. When the yoke is finished, it is divided for body and sleeves and the body is continued back and forth until the button-bands are finished, while the sleeves wait. When the button-bands are finished, the body is joined and continued in the round, then divided for the legs which are finished in the round. The sleeves are worked in the round, top down. A hood with ears is worked to finish. NECK: Cast on 58-58-66-70-78-82 stitches with circular needle size 3 MM = US 2.5 and DROPS Air. Work 4 ridges (read GARTER STITCH above = 8 knitted rows) with 2 stitches I-CORD on each side – read explanation above. Insert 1 marker inside one band (= mid-front); the piece is now measured from here. YOKE: Insert 4 markers, without working the stitches and inserting each marker between 2 stitches (the raglan-stitches); you increase for raglan on each side of these 2 stitches. Count 12-12-14-14-16-16 stitches (= left front piece), insert marker-1 before the next stitch, count 8-8-8-10-10-12 stitches (= sleeve), insert marker-2 before the next stitch, count 18-18-22-22-26-26 stitches (= back piece), insert marker-3 before the next stitch, count 8-8-8-10-10-12 stitches (= sleeve), insert marker-4 before the next stitch. There are 12-12-14-14-16-16 stitches left (= right front piece). Change to circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4. Work garter stitch back and forth with I-cord on each side, increasing for RAGLAN on each side of the raglan-stitches as follows – read explanation above for how to increase. Remember to work the first BUTTONHOLE – read explanation above. ROW 1: Knit and increase for raglan on each side of the raglan-stitches = 8 increased stitches. ROW 2: Knit, working the yarn overs as described under RAGLAN. ROW 3: Knit and increase for raglan on each side of the raglan-stitches = 8 increased stitches. ROW 4: Knit, working the yarn overs as described under RAGLAN. ROW 5: Knit without increasing. ROW 6: Knit without increasing. Work ROWS 1 to 6 a total of 5-5-6-5-6-5 times (30-30-36-30-36-30 rows worked), then work ROWS 1 and 2, 0-1-1-0-0-0 more times = 138-146-170-150-174-162 stitches. Remember to maintain the knitting gauge. Now increase as follows: ROW 1: Knit and increase for raglan on each side of the raglan-stitches = 8 increased stitches. ROW 2: Knit, working the yarn overs as before. ROW 3: Knit and increase for raglan on the front and back pieces; do not increase on the sleeves = 4 increased stitches. ROW 4: Knit, working the yarn overs as before. ROW 5: Knit without increasing. ROW 6: Knit without increasing. Work ROWS 1 to 6 a total of 3-3-2-4-3-5 times (18-18-12-24-18-30 rows worked: 3-3-2-4-3-5 increases in height on the sleeves and 6-6-4-8-6-10 increases in height on the front and back pieces) = 174-182-194-198-210-222 stitches. All increases for raglan are finished: A total of 16-17-17-18-18-20 increases in height on the front and back pieces and 13-14-15-14-15-15 increases in height on the sleeves. The yoke measures approx. 12-13-13-14-14-15 cm = 4¾"-5⅛"-5⅛"-5½"-5½"-6" from the marker mid-front. Now divide for the body and sleeves. DIVIDE FOR BODY AND SLEEVES Work 28-29-31-32-34-36 stitches as before (= front piece), place the next 34-36-38-38-40-42 stitches on a stitch holder for the sleeve, cast on 4-6-6-8-8-8stitches (mid-under the sleeve), knit 50-52-56-58-62-66 stitches (= back piece), place the next 34-36-38-38-40-42 stitches on a stitch holder for the sleeve, cast on 4-6-6-8-8-8 stitches (mid-under the sleeve), work the last 28-29-31-32-34-36 stitches as before (= front piece). The body and sleeves are finished separately. BODY: = 114-122-130-138-146-154 stitches. Continue back and forth as before until the piece measures 28-34-36-38-41-44 cm = 11"-13⅜"-14¼"-15"-16⅛"-17¼" from the marker mid-front. Now join the piece and continue in the round, from the right side as follows: Work until there are 6 stitches left on the row, lay these 6 stitches on top of the first 6 stitches on the left front piece, then work the stitches together (1 stitch from each front piece each time). So the garter stitch is correct, knit 3 x 2 stitches together, then purl 3 x 2 stitches together = 108-116-124-132-140-148 stitches. Continue with GARTER STITCH in the round – read explanation above. Insert 1 marker in the middle of the 6 knitted-together stitches; the round begins here. Work until the piece measures 31-37-39-41-44-47 cm = 12¼"-14½"-15¼"-16⅛"-17¼"-18½" from the marker mid-front (worked 3 cm = 1⅛" in the round). Now divide for the legs which are finished separately. Cut the strand. DIVIDE FOR LEGS: Without working the stitches: Start 3 stitches before the marker at the beginning of the round, place the first 6 stitches on a stitch holder (= mid-front), place the next 48-52-56-60-64-68 stitches on a 2nd stitch holder (= left leg), place the next 6 stitches on a 3rd stitch holder (= mid-back), there are 48-52-56-60-64-68 stitches on the needle (= right leg). Each leg is finished separately. RIGHT LEG: = 48-52-56-60-64-68 stitches. Insert 1 marker at the beginning of the round (= inside leg) and continue garter stitch in the round. After 1 round, decrease 2 stitches inside the leg – read DECREASE TIP. Decrease like this every 3rd round 3 times = 42-46-50-54-58-62 stitches. Work until the leg measures 14-18-24-33-37-41 cm = 5½"-7"-9½"-13"-14½"-16⅛" from the division, with the next round a purled round. Purl until there are 21-23-25-27-29-31 stitches left on the round, bind off 19-21-23-25-27-29 stitches, purl the last 2 stitches on the round = 23-25-27-29-31-33 stitches on the needle. Cut the strand. Work garter stitch back and forth for 8 cm = 3⅛". Bind off. LEFT LEG: Work in the same way as the right leg but when the leg measures 14-18-24-33-37-41 cm = 5½"-7"-9½"-13"-14½"-16⅛" from the division, work as follows on a purled round: Purl 2, bind off 19-21-23-25-27-29 stitches, purl the next 21-23-25-27-29-31 stitches = 23-25-27-29-31-33 stitches on the needle. Cut the strand. Work garter stitch back and forth for 8 cm = 3⅛". Bind off. SLEEVES: Place the 34-36-38-38-40-42 sleeve-stitches from one stitch holder onto circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4 and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 4-6-6-8-8-8 cast-on stitches under the sleeve – read SLEEVE TIP = 38-42-44-46-48-50 stitches. Insert a marker-thread in the middle of the 4-6-6-8-8-8 new stitches under the sleeve. The round starts by the marker-thread. Work garter stitch in the round. AT THE SAME TIME after 1 round, decrease 2 stitches mid-under the sleeve – read DECREASE TIP. Decrease again after a further 3 cm = 1⅛" = 34-38-40-42-44-46 stitches. Continue working until the sleeve measures 15-18-22-26-30-33 cm = 6"-7"-8¾"-10¼"-11¾"-13" from the division, with the next round a purled round. Start by the marker, purl the first 9-10-11-11-12-12 stitches, bind off 16-18-18-20-20-22 stitches and purl the last 9-10-11-11-12-12 stitches = 18-20-22-22-24-24 stitches. Cut the strand. Work garter stitch back and forth for 8 cm = 3⅛". Bind off. HOOD: Use circular needle size 3.5 MM = US 4. Knit up 1 stitch in each stitch along the cast-on edge on the neck = 58-58-66-70-78-82 stitches. Work garter stitch back and forth with 2 stitches I-cord on each side. AT THE SAME TIME on the first row increase 6 stitches evenly spaced = 64-64-72-76-84-88 stitches. Work until the hood measures 14-15-16-18-18-19 cm = 5½"-6"-6¼"-7"-7"-7½". Place the outermost 20-20-22-24-27-29 stitches on each side on separate stitch holders (the middle 24-24-28-28-30-30 stitches remain on the needle). Cut the strand. From the right side, knit until there is 1 stitch left on the needle, slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit the first stitch on the stitch holder, pass the slipped stitch over, turn, knit until there is 1 stitch left, slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit the first stitch on the stitch holder, pass the slipped stitch over, turn. The middle stitches and the stitches on the stitch holders are knitted together like this until all the stitches are knitted together. AT THE SAME TIME work short rows for the ears as follows: Work 8-8-12-14-16-18 rows, knitting-together at the end of each row. Insert 2 markers in the 4th-4th-4th-4th-6th-6th stitch in from each side, with 16-16-16-16-18-18 stitches between the markers. The marker-stitches are the middle ear-stitches. INCREASE FOR EARS: FROM RIGHT SIDE: Work to the 1st mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit the mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit to the 2nd mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit the mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit to end of row. Turn and knit back, knitting the yarn overs twisted from the wrong side. Increase like this 1 more time. INCREASE FOR EARS; POINTS 1-4: 1. FROM RIGHT SIDE: Knit to the 1st mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit the mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit 2. Turn and knit 7; knitting the yarn overs twisted as before (2 new ear-stitches). Turn. 2. FROM RIGHT SIDE: Knit to the 1st mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit the mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit to the 2nd mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit the mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit to end of row, knit 2 (2 new ear-stitches on each ear). Turn and knit 7; knitting the yarn overs twisted as before. Turn. 3. FROM RIGHT SIDE: Knit to the second mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit the mid-ear-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit to end of row (2 new ear-stitches on the 2nd ear). Turn. 4. FROM WRONG SIDE: Knit all stitches. There are 9 ear-stitches on each ear. Work POINTS 1-4 a total of 3-3-3-3-4-4 times, increasing on each side of the ear-middle-stitch and working short rows across more and more stitches. After the increases are finished, there are 17-17-17-17-21-21 stitches on each ear. DECREASE FOR EARS 1-3: 1. FROM RIGHT SIDE: Knit to 8-8-8-8-10-10 stitches before the 1st ear-middle-stitch, knit 6-6-6-6-8-8, knit 2 together, knit the ear-middle-stitch, knit 2 together, knit 6-6-6-6-8-8 (2 decreased ear-stitches). Turn and knit 15-15-15-15-19-19 stitches from the wrong side. Turn. 2. FROM RIGHT SIDE: Knit 5-5-5-5-7-7, knit 2 together, knit the ear-middle-stitch, knit 2 together, knit until there are 8-8-8-8-10-10 stitches left before the 2nd ear-middle-stitch, knit 6-6-6-6-8-8, knit 2 together, knit the ear-middle-stitch, knit 2 together, knit 6-6-6-6-8-8 stitches (2 stitches decreased on each ear). Turn, knit 15-15-15-15-19-19 from the wrong side. 3. FROM RIGHT SIDE: Knit 5-5-5-5-7-7, knit 2 together, knit the ear-middle-stitch, knit 2 together, knit to end of row (2 decreased ear-stitches). Turn and knit 1 row from the wrong side. There are 13-13-13-13-17-17 stitches on each ear. Work POINTS 1-3 a total of 3-3-3-3-4-4 times, decreasing on each side of the marker-stitches and working short rows across fewer and fewer stitches. After all the decreases, there are 5 stitches on each ear. Remember the knitting-together each side. DECREASE FROM RIGHT SIDE: Knit to 2 stitches before the 1st ear-middle-stitch, knit 2 together, knit the ear-middle-stitch, knit 2 together, knit to 2 stitches before the 2nd ear-middle-stitch, knit 2 together, knit the ear-middle-stitch, knit 2 together, knit to end of row (4 decreased stitches). Work like this 3 more times, decreasing on each row from the right side. When all the stitches on the holders are knitted together with the middle-stitches, bind off with knit from the right side. The hood measures approx. 10 to 15 cm = 4" to 6" from where stitches were placed on the holders. ASSEMBLY: Sew the 6 stitches from the stitch holder mid-front to the 6 stitches on the stitch holder mid-back, using grafting stitch so the seam is flat. Fold the flaps on the sleeves and legs up to the front and neatly sew down each side, sewing in the outermost loop of each stitch so the seam is flat. Sew the buttons onto the left band. |
