The problem with Forest Ward is that I have several skeins of Big Delight that I was hoping to use for my grandson with size 14 feet.

Dear Mrs Conklin, you can replace 1 thread Eskimo with 2 threads Big Delight - use our yarn converter and read more about alternatives here. Happy knitting!

I forgot to ask you about the instruction to bind off 4 stitches at each end of a row. Does that mean bind off 4 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows?

Hi Carol, You can either bind off at the end of 2 rows or at the beginning of 2 rows, whichever you find easiest. Happy crafting!

I am making felted slippers for my grandchildren for Christmas (3 girls and 4 boys). I like this pattern better than Winter Comfy because it felts up thicker and I like the more pointed toe. I generally leave off the picot edging. My problem is that one of my grandsons wears a size 14 shoe -- which is approximately 12". Do you have a pattern like May I or Winter Comfy in the larger size? Or can on of these patterns be adjusted to fit him?

Dear Mrs Conklin, could Forest Ward be the one you are looking for? These felting slippers are forsize 14 included. Happy knitting!

INCREASE TIP 1: Work until 1 stitch remains before marker thread. Make 1 yarn over, knit 2 (marker is between these 2 stitches) and make 1 yarn over. INCREASE TIP 2: Increase from right side with 1 yarn over. On next round knit yarn over twisted, i.e. work in back loop of stitch instead of front, to avoid holes. PICOT EDGE: Worked back and forth over the first 4 and the last 4 stitches on needle. ROW 1 (= right side): Knit until 4 stitches remain on needle. Knit 2 stitches together and make 1 double yarn over, knit 2 stitches in each of the last 2 stitches = 2 new stitches on needle. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Slip first stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, slip the last stitch on right needle over the foremost stitch, 2 stitches have been decreased. Knit 3 stitches (drop one yarn over, work only in one = done to make bigger holes). Purl until 4 stitches remain on needle. Knit 2 stitches together and make 1 double yarn over, knit 2 stitches in each of the last 2 stitches = 2 new stitches on needle. ROW 3 (= right side): Slip first stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, slip the last stitch on right needle over the foremost stitch, 2 stitches have been decreased. Knit 3 stitches (drop one yarn over, work only in one = to make bigger holes). Knit all stitches. ROWS 4-8: Knit 4 stitches, work in stockinette stitch until 4 stitches remain on needle, knit 4 stitches. Repeat rows 1 to 8. ---------------------------------------------------------- SLIPPER: Piece is first worked in the round on double pointed needles, then back and forth on circular needle. Cast on 10-11-12 stitches on double pointed needles size 5 mm / US 8 with Alaska. Knit 1 round while increasing 10-10-11 stitches evenly = 20-21-23 stitches. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE On next round insert 2 marker threads: Knit 5-5-6 stitches, insert 1 marker thread, knit 10-11-11 stitches, insert 1 marker thread and knit the last 5-5-6 stitches. Work in stockinette stitch, AT THE SAME TIME on 5th round increase 1 stitch on each side of the 2 marker threads (= 4 increased stitches every time) – READ INCREASE TIP 1! Repeat increase every other round 6 more times = 48-49-51 stitches. When piece measures 14-16-18 cm / 5½"-6¼"-7"" bind off the first and the last 4 stitches on round = 40-41-43 stitches. Then work back and forth. Continue in stockinette stitch but now work picot edge over the first and the last 4 stitches on needle, READ PICOT EDGE. When piece measures 15-17-19 cm / 6"-6¾"-7½", increase 1 stitch in each side, increase inside 4 stitches picot in each side - READ INCREASE TIP 2! Increase every 6-7-8 cm / 2⅜"-2¾"-3⅛" 3 times in total = 46-47-49 stitches. When piece measures 38-42-47 cm / 15"-16½"-18½"", loosely bind off. ASSEMBLY: Baste a thread along the cast-on stitches on toe and tighten together. Sew together mid back, edge to edge to avoid a chunky seam. FELTING: Place the slippers in the washing machine with a detergent without enzymes and optical bleach. Wash at hot 40C/104F with normal spin but no pre-wash. Put on the slipper and shape it to the correct size while it is still wet. At subsequent wash, wash the slippers at regular wool programme. DECORATION: Cut the ribbon in 2 equal lengths, one for each slipper. Use a needle to pull the ribbon through the top of the slipper at the opening. Tie the ends to a bow. AFTER FELTING: If the piece is not felted enough and is too big: Wash the piece one more time in the washing machine while it is still wet add a terry towel that measures approx. 50 x 70 cm = 19¾" x 27½" - NOTE: Do not use a short program. If the piece has been felted too much and is too small: While the piece is still wet stretch it to the correct measurements, if the piece is dry, make sure to soak it first. Remember: All subsequent washes are as a normal wool garment. |
