I want to knit this sweater but even the S size dimensions are too big for me. My hip width is 86 cm (not 104) and my bust width is 84 cm (not 98). The length (52 cm) is correct. How can I make this pattern work for me? Thank you, Nancy Oltman

Hi Nancy, This jumper is meant to be loose fitting, so the measurements will be larger than your body measurements. Happy knitting!

RIDGE / GARTER STITCH(worked back and forth): 1 ridge = Work 2 rows knit. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. The diagrams show all the rows in the pattern from the right side. INCREAS/DECREASE TIP: To work out how to increase/decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 104 stitches), minus the edge stitches (e,g, 4 stitches in each side) and divide the remaining stitches with the number of increases or decrease to be made (e.g. 9) = 10.6. In this example increase alternately every 10th and 11th stitch. If you are decreasing, then knit together alternately every 9th and 10th stitch and every 10th and 11th stitch. Do not increase/decrease across the edge stitches. INCREASE TIP (for mid underarm): Start 1 stitch before the marker thread, make 1 yarn over, knit 2 (the marker thread sits in the middle of these 2 stitches), make 1 yarn over (= 2 stitches increased). On the next row, work the yarn overs twisted knit to prevent holes. ---------------------------------------------------------- JUMPER: Front and back pieces are worked back and forth on the circular needle. The sleeves are worked around double pointed needles. BACK PIECE: Cast on 104-110-118-128-140-154 stitches with circular needle size 3.5 mm and Merino Extra Fine. Work 4 RIDGES – see description above. AT THE SAME TIME on the 7th row (= right side) increase 9-11-11-13-13-15 stitches evenly across the row – READ INCREASE/DECREASE TIP = 113-121-129-141-153-169 stitches. Change to circular needle size 4.5 mm and work the next row from the right side as follows: 4 edge stitches in garter stitch, work A.1A until there are 5 stitches left on the needle (= 26-28-30-33-36-40 repeats of 4 stitches), work A.1B (= 1 stitch) and finish with 4 edge stitches in garter stitch. Work back as shown in A.1 with 4 edge stitches in garter stitch in each side. The next row is worked as follows from the right side: 4 edge stitches in garter stitch, work A.2A until there are 5 stitches left on the needle, work A.2B (= 1 stitch) and finish with 4 edge stitches in garter stitch. Continue A.2 upwards with 4 edge stitches in garter stitch in each side. REMEMBER KNITTING TENSION! When the piece measures 35-36-37-38-39-40 cm cast off 3 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows for the armholes = 107-115-123-135-147-163 stitches on the needle. Continue with A.2 as before with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch in each side. When the piece measures 50-52-54-56-58-60 cm cast off the middle 33-33-33-37-41-41 stitches for the neck and each shoulder is worked separately. Continue the pattern as before and cast off 2 stitches on the next row from the neck = 35-39-43-47-51-59 stitches left on the shoulder. Continue working until there is 1 row left before the piece measures 52-54-56-58-60-62 cm. Work 1 row knit from the wrong side and cast off in knit from the right side (it is important the cast-off edge is not tight). Work the other shoulder in the same way. FRONT PIECE: Cast on in the same way as for the back piece and work as for the back piece until the piece measures 44-46-48-49-51-53 cm. Now place the middle 19-19-19-23-27-27 stitches on a thread for the neck and work each shoulder separately. Continue the pattern as before and cast off for the neck at the beginning of each row from the neck as follows: 2 stitches 3 times and 1 stitch 3 times = 35-39-43-47-51-59 stitches left on the shoulder. Continue working until there is 1 row left before the piece measures 52-54-56-58-60-62 cm (match it to the back piece). Work 1 row knit from the wrong side and cast off in knit from the right side (it is important the cast-off edge is not tight). Work the other shoulder in the same way. SLEEVES: Cast on 45-45-48-51-51-54 stitches with double pointed needles size 3.5 mm. Work 1 round knit. Then work rib (= knit 1 / purl 2). Continue with rib until the piece measures 4 cm. Change to double pointed needles size 4.5 mm and work 1 round knit where 5-3-4-5-3-4 stitches are decreased evenly on round – READ INCREASE/DECREASE TIP = 40-42-44-46-48-50 stitches on the needle. Insert 1 marker thread at the beginning of the round (= mid underarm). Work stocking stitch. When the piece measures 8-10-8-10-6-8 cm increase 2 stitches mid underarm – READ INCREASE TIP. Increase in this way every 3-2½-2½-2-2-1½ cm in total 12-13-14-15-16-17 times = 64-68-72-76-80-84 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 44-43-42-40-38-35 cm (shorter measurements for the larger sizes due to broader shoulder width and longer sleeve cap). On the next row, cast off the middle 6 stitches underarm (3 stitches on each side of the marker thread). The sleeve cap is finished back and forth on the circular needle as follows: Work 4 rows stocking stitch, then work 2 rows stocking stitch where the first 5 stitches at the beginning of each row are cast off. Cast off the remaining stitches when the sleeve measures approx. 46-45-44-42-40-37 cm. Work one more sleeve in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams inside the cast-off edge so that there are 2 rows purl against each other on the shoulder (seen from the right side). Sew the side seams from the armholes downwards – sew in the outermost loop of the outermost stitch so that the seam is flat, but stop when there is still approx. 8 cm left in each side (= split). Sew in the sleeves inside 1 edge stitch. NECK: Knit up from the right side approx. 90 to 108 stitches around the neckline (including the stitches on the thread at front) on a short circular needle size 3.5 mm. Work 1 round purl, 1 round knit and 1 round purl. Cast off loosely in knit. |
