---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (when working back and forth): Knit on all rows, i.e. knit from right side and knit from wrong side. 1 ridge vertically = knit 2 rows. SQUARE COLORS: 1ST SQUARE: 1 strand color off white + 1 strand color cornflower blue 2ND SQUARE: 1 strand color off white + 1 strand color cobalt blue 3RD SQUARE: 1 strand color off white + 1 strand color white fog 4TH SQUARE: 1 strand color off white + 1 strand color light denim blue 5TH SQUARE: 1 strand color off white + 1 strand color ice blue 6TH SQUARE: 1 strand color off white + 1 strand color sand DOMINO SQUARE: Insert a marker in the middle stitch on row, and move the marker upwards when working. ROW 1 (= wrong side): Knit all stitches. ROW 2 (= right side): Knit until stitch with marker, make 1 yarn over, knit 1 (= stitch with marker), make 1 yarn over, knit the rest of row (= 2 stitches increased). On next row knit yarn overs to make holes. Repeat 1st and 2nd row - increase 2 stitches in the middle of square every other row (i.e. every row from right side). ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- BLANKET – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Piece is worked back and forth in squares that are sewn together. Squares are worked in 2 strands and GARTER STITCH - see explanation above. Finish with a I-cord edge. BLANKET: Work 24 squares in total, there are 6 different color combinations and you make 4 of each of these. Remember to follow the knitting gauge! SQUARE: Cast on 3 stitches on circular needle size 5.5 with 2 strands DROPS Sky - read SQUARE COLORS in explanation above. Work DOMINO SQUARE - read explanation above. Work until there are 67 stitches in total on row and last row worked is from wrong side. Work next row as follows from the right side (i.e. with increases). Switch to 2 strands in color off white. Work 2 rows with domino as before = 69 stitches. Bind off somewhat loosely by knitting - to avoid a tight bind-off edge make 1 yarn over on each side of stitch with marker, bind off yarn overs as regular stitches. Square measures approx. 23 x 23 cm = 9" x 9". ASSEMBLY: When 4 squares in each of the 6 color combinations have been made, place squares as shown in diagram A.1. Place squares the same way with right side outwards. Sew squares together in outer loops of stitches - make sure that to avoid a tight seam. I-CORD EDGE: When all square have been sewn together, there is an edge in color off white along 1 long side and 1 short side of the blanket. Now work an I-cord edge along the 2 other sides to make an edge in color off white here. Begin from right side in the corner at the transition from one of the edge that is already off white. Use circular needle size 5.5 MM = US 9 and 2 strands color off white and work as follows: ROW 1 (= right side): Cast on 2 stitches on needle - do not turn piece. Pick up 1 stitch in the corner of square, move the 3 stitches to the other end of needle without turning the piece (to work one more time from the same side). ROW 2 (= right side): Knit 1, knit 2 stitches twisted together, pick up 1 stitch in square - pick up approx. 1 stitch between every ridge or 1 stitch in every stitch, move the 3 stitches to the other end of needle without turning the piece. Repeat 2ND ROW until the corner of the blanket. Make sure that the edge is not too tight or too loose - if it is too tight switch to a larger needle size, if it is too loose switch to a smaller needle size. This is done to avoid a tight corner: Knit 1 over the 3 stitches on needle, move the 3 stitches to the other end of needle without turning the piece. Work 1 row as 2ND ROW. Knit 1 over the 3 stitches on needle, move the 3 stitches to the other end of needle without turning the piece. Continue to work as 2ND ROW until the entire next side has been worked and until last corner. Bind off the 3 last stitches by knitting - sew the stitches to the off white edge at the bottom of corner. |
