BAG: Worked in the round on circular needle. Cast on 114 sts on circular needle size 8 mm/US 11 with dark grey. Work in stockinette until piece measures 46 cm/18". REMEMBER THE GAUGE! Then P 1 round, K 1 round and P 1 round before binding off with K. HANDLE: Worked back and forth on circular needle. Cast on 6 sts on circular needle size 8 mm/US 11 with dark grey. Work as follows: * K 1, place yarn in front of piece (i.e. towards you), slip 1 st as if to P, place yarn behind piece (from you) *, repeat from *-* the rest of row. Turn piece and repeat from *-* upwards on all rows. Working like this makes a handle worked seemingly in the round. Bind off when piece measures approx. 100 cm/39½". Knit another handle. ASSEMBLY: Sew the bag tog at the bottom. Fasten one handle in each side of bag, approx. 8 cm/3" in from the sides. CROCHET ROSE: Work 2 roses in every color, except dark gray. Crochet on hook size 6 mm/J as follows: ch 4, form a ring with 1 sl st in first ch. ROUND 1: * 1 sc in ch-ring, ch 3 *, repeat from *-* a total of 3 times and finish with 1 sl st in first sc from beg of round = 3 ch-spaces. ROUND 2: Crochet as follows in every ch-space: 1 sl st, 5 dc and 1 sl st = 3 leaves. Turn piece, work next round on the back of the rose. ROUND 3: Ch 1, work 1 sc around first sc from 1st round, ch 4, work 1 sc at the bottom in the mid of first leaf from 2nd round, * then ch 4, work 1 sc around next sc from 1st round, then ch 4, work 1 sc at the bottom in the mid of next leaf from 2nd round *, repeat from *-* until a total of 5 ch-spaces have been worked, finish with ch 4 and 1 sl st in first sc from from beg of round = 6 ch-spaces. Turn piece, work next round on the front of the rose. ROUND 4: Crochet as follows in every ch-space: 1 sl st, 6 dc and 1 sl st = 6 leaves. Turn piece, work next round on the back of the rose. ROUND 5: Ch 1, work 1 sc around first sc from 3rd round, ch 6, * work 1 sc around next sc from 3rd round, ch 6, * repeat from *-* until a total of 5 ch-spaces have been worked, finish with ch 6 and 1 sl st in first sc from beg of round = 6 ch-spaces. Turn piece, work last round from the RS of the rose. ROUND 6: Crochet as follows in every ch-space: 1 sl st, 6 dc and 1 sl st = 6 leaves. Fasten off. Rose measures approx. 10 cm/4" in diameter. Felt the bag and the roses separately, the roses are sew on the bag afterwards. FELTING: The piece can be felted either in the washing machine or the tumble dryer – read description below. Remember: Subsequent washes are as for a normal wool garment. IN WASHING MACHINE: Washing machines will vary when felting. If the piece is not felted enough, it can be felted again. If it is felted too much, it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet. DO THE FOLLOWING: Lay the piece in the washing machine, using a programme of approx. 40 minutes (not a wool programme). Wash at 40 degrees C = 104 degrees F without pre-wash, detergent is optional. After washing, shape the piece while it is still wet. IN TUMBLE DRYER: Felting in a tumble dryer gives good control over the degree of felting. The tumble dryer can be opened during drying to check the size of the piece. If it is not felted enough it can be thoroughly wetted and felted again. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet. DO THE FOLLOWING: Lay the piece in water so it becomes completely wet, then place it in the tumble dryer and begin the drying process. Dry to the desired size, checking regularly. ASSEMBLY: Sew the roses on one side of the bag, there should be 4 in width and 3 in height, use a thin grey yarn to sew. |
