Tips & Help

Thank you for choosing DROPS Design!

We do our best to make our patterns easy to follow.

For that purpose, each of our patterns has specific tutorial videos to help you, which you will find at the bottom of the page.

We have also step-by-step lessons to help you understand some of the techniques we use in our patterns. You'll find them here!

NOTE: This pattern is written in American English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from inches to cm - click here. There are different terms for crocheting in American and British English. If this pattern includes crochet, click for "crochet terms" here. For this pattern in British English, please click here.

To calculate how to decrease/increase evenly, use the total number of stitches on round (e.g. 68 stitches) and divide stitches by number of decreased/increases to be done (e.g. 4) = 17. In this example decrease by knitting every 16th and 17th stitch together. If increasing, increase after every 17th stitch (increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over, on next round knit yarn over twisted to avoid holes).

See diagram A.1.

To avoid the knitting gauge to tighten when working pattern, it is important not to tighten the strands on back side of piece. Switch to a higher needle number when working pattern if the pattern is somewhat tight.

KNITTING TIP-2 (applies to heel):
To get a stronger heel the entire heel and heel decrease can be worked in 2 strands as follows: Use strand inside and outside of ball and work 1 stitch alternately with one and the other strand. This way you get a thicker heel without working with double strand.

ROW 1 (= right side): Knit until 7-8-8 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to knit, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch knitted, turn piece.
ROW 2 (= wrong side): Purl until 7-8-8 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to purl, purl 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch purled, turn piece.
ROW 3 (= right side): Knit until 6-7-7 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to knit, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch knitted, turn piece.
ROW 4 (= wrong side): Purl until 6-7-7 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to purl, purl 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch purled, turn piece.
Continue decrease like this with 1 stitch less before each decrease until there are 14-14-16 stitches on needle.

DECREASE TIP (applies to toe):
Begin 2 stitches before marker thread, knit 2 together, marker thread, knit 2 twisted together (= 2 stitches decreased).

Worked in the round on double pointed needles, top down.
Cast on 68-68-76 stitches on double pointed needles size 2.5 mm / US 1.5 with red. Knit 1 round. Work rib = knit 2/purl 2 for 3 cm / 1''. Knit 1 round while at the same time decrease 4 stitches evenly - read INCREASE/DECREASE TIP = 64-64-72 stitches. Read KNITTING TIP-1 and work A.1 in the round. On every round marked with arrow in diagram, decrease 2 stitches evenly. REMEMBER THE GAUGE! When A.1 has been worked vertically, there are 56-56-64 stitches on round. Knit 1 round with red while adjusting number of stitches to 54-58-62.
Then work in stockinette stitch with red until finished measurements. Work 2 cm / 3/4'' in stockinette stitch. Now keep the first 26-28-30 stitches on needles for heel and slip the last 28-30-32 stitches on 1 stitch holder (= mid on top of foot). Read KNITTING TIP-2 and work in stockinette stitch back and forth over heel stitches for 5-5½-6 cm / 2''-2 1/4''-2½''.
Insert 1 marker in middle of row. NOW MEASURE PIECE FROM HERE! Now work HEEL DECREASE - see explanation above. After heel decrease work next round as follows: Work the 14-14-16 stitches from heel, pick up 13-14-16 stitches along side of heel, work the 28-30-32 stitches from stitch holder and pick up 13-14-16 stitches along the other side of heel = 68-72-80 stitches on needles.
Insert 1 marker on each side of the 28-30-32 stitches on top of foot.
Work in stockinette stitch in the round and decrease on each side of the 28-30-32 stitches on top of foot as follows: Knit the last 2 stitches before first marker on top of foot twisted together and knit the 2 stitches after last marker on top of foot together. Decrease like this every other round 8-8-10 times in total = 52-56-60 stitches.
Continue to work until piece measures 18-19-21 cm / 7''-7½''-8¼'' from marker on heel (approx. 4-5-6 cm / 1½''-2''-2 3/8'' remain until finished measurements). Insert 1 marker thread in each side so that there are 26-28-30 stitches both on top of foot and under foot. Then decrease for toes on each side of both marker threads - READ DECREASE TIP (= 4 stitches decreased). Decrease like this on every other round 4-7-9 times in total and then on every round 6-3-2 times in total = 12-16-16 stitches remain on needles. On next round knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 6-8-8 stitches remain on needle. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten.
Work the other sock the same way.
