On V neck decrease, the directions say every second and fourth row. Does that mean on right side only (not counting wrong side rows?) Or does it mean decrease on the second row on the right side and then wait and decrease on the fourth row? I decreased on the second and fourth row as I read it and that meant that I decreased on every right side row, but that doesn't look like the photo. Help please and thank you in advance.
25.03.2023 - 02:45DROPS Design answered:
Dear Linda, every second row means (usually) on every right side row. Every fourth row means on ever other right side row. Happy Knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge = knit 2 rows. DECREASE TIP (armholes and back of neck): All decreases are worked from the right side! At beginning of row: 1 stitch in garter stitch, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (1 stitch decreased). At end of row: Work until there are 3 stitches left, knit 2 together and 1 stitch in garter stitch (1 stitch decreased). INCREASE TIP (sleeves): All increases are worked from the right side! Work 1 stitch in garter stitch, knit 1, 1 yarn over (1 stitch increased), knit until there are 2 stitches left, 1 yarn over (1 stitch increased), knit 1 and 1 stitch in garter stitch. On the next row purl the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Then work the new stitches in stocking stitch. CASTING-OFF TIP: To avoid the cast-off edge being tight you can cast off with a larger size needle. If the edge is still tight, make 1 yarn over after approx. each 4th stitch at the same time as casting off; the yarn overs are cast off as normal stitches. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JUMPER - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The front piece, back piece and sleeves are worked separately, back and forth and bottom up. The piece is sewn together and the neck worked to finish. BACK PIECE: Cast on 90-94-102-114-118-126-134 stitches with circular needle size 4 mm and 1 strand of each quality (2 strands). Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work rib back and forth (knit 2, purl 2) with 1 stitch in GARTER STITCH on each side – read description above, for 6 cm. Knit 1 row from the wrong side and decrease 11 stitches evenly spaced (do not decrease the edge stitches) = 79-83-91-103-107-115-123 stitches. Change to circular needle size 5.5 mm and continue with stocking stitch and 1 stitch in garter stitch on each side. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When the piece measures 38-39-40-41-42-43-44 cm, cast off 3 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows for the armholes = 73-77-85-97-101-109-117 stitches. Continue to decrease for the armholes inside the 1 edge stitch – read DECREASE TIP, on each row from the right side a total of 1-1-1-5-5-7-7 times = 71-75-83-87-91-95-103 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 52-54-56-58-60-62-64 cm. On the next row from the right side cast off the middle 23-23-25-25-27-27-29 stitches for the neck and finish each shoulder separately. Place the first 24-26-29-31-32-34-37 stitches worked on a thread (right shoulder). LEFT SHOULDER (when the garment is worn): Start from the wrong side. Work stocking stitch with 1 stitch in garter stitch on each side. On the first row from the right side decrease 1 stitch at the beginning of the row for the neck – read DECREASE TIP = 23-25-28-30-31-33-36 stitches. Work until the piece measures 54-56-58-60-62-64-66 cm. Cast off with knit from the right side - read CASTING-OFF TIP! RIGHT SHOULDER (when the garment is worn): Start from the wrong side. Work stocking stitch with 1 stitch in garter stitch on each side. On the first row from the right side decrease 1 stitch at the end of the row for the neck – remember DECREASE TIP = 23-25-28-30-31-33-36 stitches. Work until the piece measures 54-56-58-60-62-64-66 cm. Cast off with knit from the right side. FRONT PIECE: Cast on 90-94-102-114-118-126-134 stitches with circular needle size 4 mm and 1 strand of each quality (2 strands). Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work rib back and forth (knit 2, purl 2) with 1 stitch in garter stitch on each side for 6 cm. Knit 1 row from the wrong side and decrease 10 stitches evenly spaced (do not decrease the edge stitches) = 80-84-92-104-108-116-124 stitches. Change to circular needle size 5.5 mm and continue with stocking stitch and 1 stitch in garter stitch on each side until the piece measures 30-31-32-33-34-35-36 cm. Now decrease for the V-neck on the next row from the right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, knit 38-40-44-50-52-56-60, knit 2 and place these 2 stitches on a thread for the neck, knit 38-40-44-50-52-56-60 and finish with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch = 39-41-45-51-57-57-61 stitches on each shoulder. Finish each shoulder separately. RIGHT SHOULDER (when the garment is worn): = 39-41-45-51-53-57-61 stitches. You now decrease for the neck and armhole at the same time – read the next 2 sections before continuing. V-NECK: Start from the wrong side, work stocking stitch with 1 stitch in garter stitch on each side. On the next row from the right side decrease as follows: 1 stitch in garter stitch, knit 3, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (1 stitch decreased), knit to the end of the row. Decrease like this, alternately on the 2nd and 4th row, a total of 12-12-13-13-14-14-15 times. ARMHOLE: AT THE SAME TIME when the piece measures 38-39-40-41-42-43-44 cm, cast off 3 stitches at the beginning of the row from the wrong side. Then decrease for the armhole on the inside of the 1 edge stitch – read DECREASE TIP, on each row from the right side a total of 1-1-1-5-5-7-7 times. When all the decreases for the neck and armhole are finished, there are 23-25-28-30-31-33-36 stitches on the shoulder. Work until the piece measures 54-56-58-60-62-64-66 cm. Cast off with knit from the right side - remember CASTING-OFF TIP. LEFT SHOULDER (when the garment is worn): = 39-41-45-51-53-57-61 stitches. Decrease for the neck and armhole as follows. V-NECK: Start from the wrong side, work stocking stitch with 1 stitch in garter stitch on each side. On the next row from the right side decrease as follows: Work until there are 6 stitches left, knit 2 together (1 stitch decreased), knit 3 and 1 stitch in garter stitch. Decrease like this, alternately on the 2nd and 4th row, a total of 12-12-13-13-14-14-15 times. ARMHOLE: AT THE SAME TIME when the piece measures 38-39-40-41-42-43-44 cm, cast off 3 stitches at the beginning of the row from the right side. Then decrease for the armhole on the inside of the 1 edge stitch on each row from the right side a total of 1-1-1-5-5-7-7 times. When all the decreases for the neck and armhole are finished, there are 23-25-28-30-31-33-36 stitches on the shoulder. Work until the piece measures 54-56-58-60-62-64-66 cm. Cast off with knit from the right side - remember CASTING-OFF TIP. SLEEVES: Cast on 46-46-50-50-54-54-58 stitches with circular needle size 4 mm and 1 strand of each quality (2 strands). Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work rib back and forth (knit 2, purl 2) with 1 stitch in garter stitch on each side for 6 cm and the next row is from the right side. Change to circular needle size 5.5 mm. Work 1 stitch in garter stitch, knit 44-44-48-48-52-52-56 and decrease 6-4-6-6-8-6-8 stitches evenly spaced, finish with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch = 40-42-44-44-46-48-50 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch and 1 stitch in garter stitch on each side. When the sleeve measures 8 cm, increase 1 stitch inside 2 stitches on each side – read INCREASE TIP! Increase like this every 7-6-5-4½-4-3½-3½ cm a total of 6-7-8-9-10-11-11 times = 52-56-60-62-66-70-72 stitches. Work until the sleeve measures 48-48-47-46-46-44-44 cm. Now work the sleeve cap as follows: Cast off 3 stitches on each side 2-2-2-3-3-4-4 times. Cast off when the sleeve measures 50-50-49-49-48-48-48 cm. Work the other sleeve in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. Sew the sleeve cap to the armhole. Sew the sleeve and side seams in one go, inside 1 edge stitch. NECK: Knit up stitches from the right side, inside 1 stitch, using circular needle size 4 mm and 1 strand of each quality. Start mid-back and knit up 54 to 66 stitches as far as the 2 stitches on the thread (number of stitches should be divisible by 2), place the 2 stitches on the needle and knit them (mid-stitches), knit up 2 more stitches than on the left side (number of stitches is divisible by 4, 56 to 68 stitches) = 112 to 136 stitches. Insert 1 marker between the 2 mid-stitches; these stitches are always knitted. NOTE! Count back to the beginning of the round so the mid-stitches are knitted when working rib. Work rib (knit 2, purl 2) until there are 2 stitches left before the marker, knit 2 together, marker, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. There are still 2 knitted stitches mid-front (1 on each side of the marker). Continue the rib to the end of the round. Work in the round and decrease on every round until the neck measures 4 cm. Work 1 round without decreasing = folding edge. Now increase on each side of the mid-stitches every round as follows: Work rib until there is 1 stitch left before the marker, make 1 yarn over, knit 2 (mid-stitches), 1 yarn over and work rib to the end of the round; yarn overs are worked twisted on the next round. Continue to increase until the neck measures 8 cm. Cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Fold the neck double to the inside and sew a couple of stitches to keep it in place. |
