How to knit edge stitches in garter stitch

In this DROPS video we show how you can knit edge stitches in garter stitch.

When knitting a piece you have 1 stitch in each side of your work that is an edge stitch. The edge stitch are usually not included in the pattern, and there are different ways to knit the edge stitches. This depends on what kind of edge it is, if it will be sewn later like a side seam, if it will be open like on a scarf or a front edge of a jacket.

Edge sts in garter st is good when you want a nice firm edge on a piece that you later will sew inside or pick up sts from. Knit the edge sts on every row, and you will have your edge sts in garter st.

Dear Phoebe, you can see an example in the following video: https://www.garnstudio.com/video.php?id=1728&lang=en. You knit up 1 stitch in each of the edge stitches, which were worked in garter stitches when you worked the body (1 edge stitch in garter stitch on each side). So you pick up 1 stitch along the edge. These are the edges where the buttons and buttonholes will be worked in, so they are the front piece edges. First you work one edge and then the other one, so you will pick up stitches on one side for one edge and then on the other one for the other edge. Happy knitting!

Dear Michelle, when you have to work 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, you will knit this stitch from right side as well as from wrong side. This means from WS you will purl the stitches in stocking stitch but knit the edge stitches, just as shown in this video. Happy knitting!

Dear Pamela, when you work the edge stitches in garter stitch, the first stitch and the last stitch will be knitted both from right side and from wrong side (in the front loop of stitches, as usual). Happy knitting!

Dear Mrs Staunton, at the beginning of the pattern, you should find an explanation on how to work GARTER STITCH, ie knit all rows, in other words, you should knit the 2 edge stitches in garter stitch (check the beginning of the row from RS as you start copying sentence after the number of sts) at the end of the row from RS, ie knit these 2 sts both from RS and from WS - and work the other sts from WS with K over K and P over P. How to work a rib (knit 1, purl 1) around with circular needles
