Bon tricot!

I don't quite comprehend what the arrows on the squares mean. For instance you say to cast on the side yet don't you sometimes cast on the top? I confuse easily with mechanics I can't figure how to construct like why do some arrows point south and some point north when actually the only choice you have is ridges go vertically or horizontally? I eagerly await your reply thanx
17.09.2019 - 00:03DROPS Design answered:
Dear Mrs Lowell, the arrows show the knitting direction, in other words, you cast on the sts on square-1 and work in the knitting direction (= as usual). Then for square-2: pick up sts along the right side of the square-1 and work the square-2. Then for square-3, pick up the sts along the left side of square-2 and work square-3. On square-4, pick up the sts on the left side of square-3 and work the square working together 1 st from square-1 at the end of every row from RS and work the last st on square-3 tog with this stitch picked up. Continue like this following the arrows. Happy knitting!

COLORS AND KNITTING DIRECTION: See Fig.1. The numbers in the bottom left hand corner of squares indicate the color to be used, A = Alpaca and F = Fabel. The arrow shows the knitting direction. The numbers in the top right hand corner of squares shows the square sequence. KNITTING TIP: At the end of row, pick up 1 st in the next square. On next row K tog the 2 outermost sts to avoid seams afterwards. -------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------- SHAWL: The shawl is worked in 1 large square which is folded double afterwards. Worked in garter st throughout, i.e. K all rows. SQUARE 1: Cast on 46 sts on needle size 3.5 mm / US 4 with Fabel 901. Work garter st back and forth on needle until square measures 20 cm / 8". REMEMBER THE GAUGE! Bind off loosely. SQUARE 2: Pick up 46 sts along the side of square 1 (= approx 1 st in every other row) on needle size 3.5 mm / US 4 with Fabel 671. Work garter st back and forth on needle until square measures 20 cm / 8". Bind off loosely. SQUARE 3: Pick up 46 sts along the side of square 2 on needle size 3.5 mm / US 4 with Alpaca 2915. Work garter st back and forth on needle until square measures 20 cm / 8". Bind off loosely. SQUARE 4: Pick up 46 sts along the side of square 3 on needle size 3.5 mm / US 4 with Fabel 542. Work garter st back and forth on needle – see KNITTING TIP - until square measures 20 cm / 8". Bind off loosely. Now continue knitting squares in the same way as SQUARE 4. See FIG.1 for square no, color and knitting direction. When all 25 squares are complete the shawl measures approx 100 cm / 39½" x 100 cm / 39½". |
