Double Knitting: invisible cast on

Cast on this way with two colors alternating for an invisible start on your double knitted piece.

The starting slipknot will be dropped after a couple rows and is not to be included in the number of stitches to be cast on.
You cast on for both sides at the same time, and the stitches alternately belongs to front and back side of work. Make sure to cast on an even number of stitches, so that you will have the same amount of sts in the front and in the back. When working first row make sure strands are twisted to secure first stitch. Make sure to knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches as shown in our Drops Video.

Dear Mrs Plewman, we only have this one, but you can work the first row as shown in the video then join in the round at the end of the first row to continue in the round. When weaving the end you can then fix the small gap at the join. Happy knitting!

Double Knitting: invisible bind off

To match the invisible cast on you will have to make a kitchener stitching at the end of your work. Separate the stitches in the front and back onto two separate needles. Cut yarn and make one tail long enought for stitching, i.e about 3 times the width of your work. Put the long strand on the darning needle and the other strand will be weaved in later. Double Knitting: Pattern

In double knitting every other stitch belongs to the front and every other to the back. In this Drops Video we have a red and a green side, i.e stitches are red and green alternating and you should look at them as pairs. In our example we work a very basic pattern, where you work the stitches in opposite colors. So when we come to the 1st stitch marked in chart, that means next 2 stitches should be switching colors. We therefore work the first stitch red instead of green on the green side, and the following stitch we work green instead of red. On the next row where we shall switch 3 stitches in a row, that means 6 stitches should be worked alternating. We did not use stitch markers in our video, but for some more complicated patterns it can be a good help.

Then we show how to slip the edge sts, for a looser decorative edge. Both methods will connect the sides so piece is closed each side. Double Knitting: two color bind off

To best match the two color cast on you want to work a bind off like this on your finished double knitted project. In this DROPS video we are holding the 2 strands together, knit first 2 sts together, *k2tog through the back loops, then slip the 2nd st on right needle over 1st. Repeat from * across, after last stitch has been slipped over, cut yarn and pull through. Weave in ends.

How to cast on with 2 circular needles to get a looser cast on edge

In this DROPS video we show how you can cast on with two circular needles. We sometimes recommend this in our patterns to prevent the cast on edge being too tight. When you have cast on the required number of stitches, you pull out one circular needle and start to knit. In this video, we cast on with needle 7 and 8 = US 10,75 and US 11, and it is needle 8 = US 10,75 that we pull out. We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video.
