Double Knitting: two color cast on

Cast on this way with two colors alternating to start your double knitted piece.
The starting slipknot will be dropped after a couple rows and is not to be included in the number of stitches to be cast on.

You cast on for both sides at the same time, and the stitches alternately belongs to front and back side of work. Make sure to cast on an even number of stitches, so that you will have the same amount of sts in the front and in the back. When working first row make sure strands are twisted to secure first stitch. Make sure to knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches as shown in our Drops Video.

Hello, the person demonstrating this cast on uses a very interesting method to hold the two yarns while knitting after the cast on, but it's a little hard to see how she wraps the yarns around the fingers of her left hand. Does the upper yarn pass only across the front of the middle finger, while the lower yarn passes in front of both the middle and ring finger? Do you have a video where the management of the two yarns is demonstrated clearly? Her skill is remarkable. Thanks.

To match the invisible cast on you will have to make a kitchener stitching at the end of your work. Separate the stitches in the front and back onto two separate needles. In double knitting every other stitch belongs to the front and every other to the back. In this Drops Video we have a red and a green side, i.e stitches are red and green alternating and you should look at them as pairs. In our example we work a very basic pattern, where you work the stitches in opposite colors. So when we come to the 1st stitch marked in chart, that means next 2 stitches should be switching colors. We therefore work the first stitch red instead of green on the green side, and the following stitch we work green instead of red. On the next row where we shall switch 3 stitches in a row, that means 6 stitches should be worked alternating. We did not use stitch markers in our video, but for some more complicated patterns it can be a good help.

To best match the two color cast on you want to work a bind off like this on your finished double knitted project. In this DROPS video we are holding the 2 strands together, knit first 2 sts together, *k2tog through the back loops, then slip the 2nd st on right needle over 1st. Repeat from * across, after last stitch has been slipped over, cut yarn and pull through. Weave in ends.

How to work a diagonal shoulder, cast on stitches for the neckline and work the back piece together

In this DROPS video, we show you how to work each front piece with diagonal shoulders and short rows, the piece is worked bottom up. Then we show how to increase stitches for the neckline and join the shoulders for the back piece, then continue working top down. An I-cord band is worked on each side. We have already worked one section of the front piece and decreased stitches for the neckline. The video shows how we work 6 short rows (German short rows) on the right front piece, creating a diagonal shoulder. Then we show how to increase 1 stitch 3 times towards the neckline, which is now the back piece. Then we show the same for the left shoulder and finally cast on 12 stitches between the shoulders before the shoulders are knitted together. We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video. This technique is used among other things in pattern DROPS 255-9, Driftwood Vest, with a different stitch count, number of short rows and cast-on stitches.
